Warwickshire

Broom Swim School is a privately run family business, based in the gardens of The Grange and is run by Sallie and Alice Walters. The team at Broom always maintain the best standards of teaching and cleanliness, with organised, efficient and professional staff. Broom also has the warmest water locally, set at a balmy 31.5°C. The story of Broom Swim School starts in 1975 when Sallie’s parents, David and Gillian Burden, moved to The Grange and discovered, within it’s overgrown garden, an ornamental Victorian fish pond, complete with pondweed, fish and frogs! Having fished out all the occupants, the pond was converted into an outdoor family swimming pool. In 1986 Sallie returned from London and its office jobs to start up her own business. Having always been a very keen swimmer, competing for the Avon Neptunes in Stratford, Worcester City and various school clubs. Sallie took her ASA Preliminary Teachers Certificate at Crystal Palace, and spent the summer teaching locals, relatives and other unsuspecting people to swim in the family’s outdoor pool. The old wood sheds were converted into changing rooms, and ever eager punters had to race across the lawn, towel in hand, to plunge into the relatively warm water. Once Sallie was fully qualified as an ASA Level 2 Teacher and RLSS Lifeguard, the pool was enclosed within a wooden, log cabin style building. The official opening day was on Saturday 2nd April 1988, when more than 250 people tramped around the pool house and garden, and more importantly, booked lessons and sessions in the pool. In 2009 Sallie’s eldest daughter, Alice, started to work at the Swim School part-time as a fully qualified lifeguard. A keen and competitive swimmer herself, she swam at competition level for Stratford Sharks and school, and then qualified as an ASA Level Two Swimming Teacher. Alice’s love of sports led her to study Sport & Social Sciences at the University of Bath, and after a stint working in London for the 2012 Olympic Organising Committee, she found herself being drawn back to Warwickshire life. Alice now works full-time at the Swim School teaching and running the office with Sallie; and has become the third generation involved in the family business, alongside Sallie’s brother Angus Burden who is our Head of Maintenance. In November 2017, Broom Swim School was honoured and thrilled to be awarded “Swim School Of The Year” at the National Swim England Awards held at Birmingham University. The award means the world to us and our team, and we have dedicated this to the late David and Gillian Burden, without whom there would be no swimming in the garden at Broom.

We are happy to show you around and give you an insight into the historic elements of the building, there are many original items still available to view. We have shared some of the highlights to look out for below. We hope you enjoy reading about our hotel’s history and distinct character. Gill, Peter & Naomi The Hands Family The Hands Family & Hotels – How it All Began! Peter and Gill Hands started their business “Tauber Hands Ltd”, shortly after getting married in February 1986. Their first business, The Hyperion House hotel was a small 18 bedroom 2 star hotel in Fairford, Gloucestershire, which they purchased and quickly developed into a very successful 3 star 26 bedroom hotel with a popular restaurant. Naomi, currently Operations Director at the Speech House was born in 1988 in Fairford, and lived there with Peter’s daughter, Amanda. Shortly after having sold the Hyperion House the family moved back to Hereford. Having made this decision to opt for an “easier” way of life they invested the proceeds from the sale of the Hyperion into Breinton Court, a self-catering leisure complex on the banks of the River Wye, just outside Hereford . Katy, their second daughter soon appeared, and Breinton Court also became the family home for the next 31 years. Whilst at Breinton Court, Peter and Gill went on to purchase “The Bell Hotel “opposite Tewkesbury Abbey in 1992 and having sold it in 1995 took a short break until 1997 when they purchased the Heritage Park Hotel in the Rhondda Valley a 44 bedroomed hotel with a health spa and large conference and banqueting facility for 250 guests. They sold the Heritage Park Hotel in 2005, thinking they would take a break for a while but after 5 years of Peter taking over as Chairman of “Visit Hereford” for three and a half years and Gill doing some consultancy work, they couldn’t get rid of the “Hospitality Itch”. In 2010, they decided to have one last hurrah and invested in the wonderful historic Speech House. Ten years later, in 2020, their daughter Naomi, joined the family business. Having grown up in hotels, and then working in London for the past 10 years in marketing, she decided it was time for Mum & Dad to start considering the idea of retirement. Naomi, who has a keen interest in mountain biking and the outdoors was appointed “Operations Director”, and is bringing new ideas to The Speech House. She has a broad knowledge of the industry, and looking to bring new thoughts and ideas in to keep the Speech House as the premier hotel in the heart of The Royal Forest of Dean. The Speech House Hotel truly is a Hands family business, with Katy’s art and paintings all around the building, and Amanda holding her weddding at the hotel in 2021! The other new addition to the Management Team is Luca, Peter and Gill’s adopted Lucas Terrier who can often be seen around the hotel. Luca was made “Director of Dog Friendly Visits” He has been given his own Instagram page and become quite a favourite with the guests, both two and four legged.

Torquay Boys' Grammar School

Torquay

The school has a very proud history and can trace its roots back to 1904 and the establishment of the Pupil Teacher Centre in Abbey Road. Even in those days overcrowding was a problem and Torquay Secondary School, as it had become, was opened in Barton Road in April 1915 with 170 boys. We remained at Barton Road until 1983 when we moved to our purpose built site here at Shiphay. At that time we had 750 boys in four Houses; now we have 1120 boys and girls in six houses (girls studying the International Baccalaureate are part of our sixth form) so extensive building programmes have taken place in the last 30 years or so to keep our facilities up-to-date and to provide a suitable environment for learning of the highest quality to take place. The school now stands as one of the top 20 boys’ schools in the country and is forever moving forward in the drive to providing an education, both academic and cultural, to rival that found anywhere in the country. We became a Grant Maintained School in 1993, were given Specialist Status in 1996, Foundation Status in 1997, Leading Edge in 2000, Beacon Status, High Performing Specialist Status in 2006, became part of the South West Academic Trust in 2008, granted Academy Status in 2010 and we became a Multi-Academy Trust in 2012 when we sponsored Torquay Academy in their bid for Academy status. Along the way we have undergone three OFSTED inspections and been found to be outstanding each time. We are rightly proud of our school and hope the website gives a flavour of just why we are so successful in providing an excellent well-rounded education to our students.
