Here at HeadStart Primary, we provide Maths, English and Science teaching and assessment materials for primary schools. All the authors who write for HeadStart Primary have many years of teaching experience and have a wide knowledge of which resources are effective for the development of children’s learning. As a former primary headteacher, I was very fortunate in leading a dedicated and highly skilled team of teachers and teaching assistants to achieve an ‘outstanding’ grade at my last Ofsted inspection. My ethos as CEO of HeadStart Primary is the same as it has been throughout my teaching career. I believe success can be achieved by applying tried and tested principles with care, determination and consistency. I know how busy teachers are, and I understand that teachers need top-quality, easy-to-use and time-saving resources to help them with the demands of delivering a rich curriculum. Our materials are designed with great care and attention to detail. The process of writing starts with the focus on the child, and how the content will help an individual pupil learn. The most important person in a child’s school day is their class teacher, and class teachers need resources that are effective in supporting their high-quality teaching. School leaders understand the need for a consistent systematic approach across the school, and whilst our materials meet this criteria, they also complement and facilitate good and outstanding teaching.

There is a school of thought that the art of calligraphy has unique healing power. This gentle practice not only calms the mind but can also prove an escape from physical pain. It was, in fact, an accident and a period of recuperation that changed my life and set me on the path to my calligraphy career, culminating in the founding of Laura Prudence Calligraphy. As a former schoolteacher, I appreciate that being a good educator also means being an excellent learner. That’s why I chose to study under some of the U.K.’s leading calligraphers. I have worked with the world-renowned Modern Calligraphy Company known for their alliances with leading luxury brands. Additionally, I have trained under the watchful eye of Gaynor Goffe and Mary Noble, both leading tutors in calligraphic arts. I specialise in Modern Dip Pen and Modern Brush Calligraphy and the harder to master Classic Copperplate and Flourished Copperplate Calligraphy. I live and work in Solihull and am married with two boys. I have an obsessive love of sewing, which has driven my career through a wide range of sewing related experiences. I came from a family of sewers and from a very early age was encouraged to be creative. My love of embroidery and needlework led me to pursue a career in teaching. I attended a specialist needlework and home economics teacher training College in Liverpool. I always enjoyed "hands on work" and gained experience working with an expert team of fitting and alteration seamstresses at an exclusive dress shop the summer I finished at Liverpool. I wanted a creative career, so I applied for the position of wardrobe assistant at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. This was a wonderful work experience, sewing fabulous fabrics and making a diverse range of costumes. The theatre wardrobe mistress encouraged me to continue studying and I enrolled for a City and Guilds course. Although theatre working hours were long, they were flexible and I could study and work full time. I achieved merit for City and Guilds Creative Studies; two years later I received a distinction in Fashion and Design and won the year prize. My qualifications and experience opened another career opportunity in the fashion industry. I wanted to work fewer hours and the job I was offered provided training in production planning and buying. Working regular hours I decided to think again about the teaching career I had abandoned. I was employed by Birmingham Adult Education Department to work in evenings teaching Embroidery and Needlework. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching, so when I married and the family arrived I gave up full time work in industry. I returned to college, updated my teaching qualifications and became a part time teacher In the early 90's I wrote the Tailoring Programme for the West Midlands Access Foundation, later used by Open College Network. By 1996 I was determined to offer my own courses, now known as Gill Arnold Dressmaking Training. In 1997 I became Sewing World magazine's pattern specialist. Over 20 years teaching has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge to produce articles on patterns and fitting. I have also written for Sew Today and American publications. With the support of the sewing industry I enjoy being a regular exhibitor at shows all over the country including the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. My yearly programme provides a full range of sewing events, exhibitions, seminars, cloth sales, trips and courses.

Tanren SKC London Dojo

Dan was born in Cleveland Ohio and until the age of 24 grew up in rural eastern Ohio in “Amish Country”. At the age of 24, Dan took up ballet classes as part of his physical therapy for injuries sustained in a severe car accident. As a complete fluke, that led to him being accepted into a local prestigious performing arts college in the aptly named Painesville, Ohio a few years later. During his study for a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in fine performing arts, he danced for several small companies and had a one season premier dance gig for the Ohio Light Opera Company as well as a decent stage acting career, singing in musicals and light opera productions. That led him to an acting career which included 3 years, in residence and touring, with The Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, television and film spots and more stage acting in London. Due to a second almost identical car accident in England, Dan took up ultra-distance running, clocking up approx. 35,000 career miles while training for and carrying out events in many countries around the world to raise money for children’s charities and hunger issues. His charity vehicle for those events is responsible for raising roughly £2 million. His Karate career began as a gift to himself for his 50th birthday in 2008, as he decided to move away from ultra-distance running. Having seen and been inspired by his son at karate training at an after-school club, he decided that Karate was a physical pursuit that he strongly connected with; athletically, due to his long career in running, artistically, due to his previous involvement in ballet, and ideologically. This fresh start at a turning point in his life has now lead to him start his own dojo, and to commence teaching others, mainly children, the art of Karate-Do after 10 years of training. Despite this being a relatively short period, Dan believes that he can call on and incorporate his own experiences from previous endeavours, bringing in training ideas from the world of ultra-marathons, classical ballet and stage performance, to the way he teaches karate to those who train at his dojo. The dojo officially opened on August 8th 2018, to mark his 60th birthday. All are welcome and there are no excuses good enough for him for anyone to not take up karate as a healthful, exciting pursuit. Karate and Karate Do is for everyone. Gamabate (try your best)
