A NEW one-day watercolour painting workshop for beginners run by local artist and printmaker Lou Davis in our Edinburgh City Centre workshop space. Join artist Lou Davis for a whole day learning to paint in beautiful fluid watercolours. Lou uses watercolour to create simple and approachable patterned and abstract pieces that allow you to get acquainted with this medium in a way that helps you focus, shut out the outside world and simply create. In this workshop, you’ll learn everything you need to get started painting beautiful and relaxing projects using watercolour. We’ll cover a number of projects throughout the day, that will take you through the basics of watercolour from colour mixing and making different brush strokes, learning about paper types and water control, through to mixed media techniques: adding textures, working with masking fluid and embellishing your pieces with pens and metallic paints. This workshop is perfect if you’re new to watercolour and offers a really beautiful way to explore the medium, it’s also good if you’re experienced in watercolour and are interested in using your painting and drawing time to relax and de-stress. All materials for this workshop will be provided, and the price includes morning and afternoon refreshments from local suppliers. You are welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are several cafés and takeaway options nearby. [Judith] More information The Arienas Collective workshops, courses and events are run from a welcoming and supportive environment within a Georgian mews home in Edinburgh’s City Centre New Town. We invite you to join us, leave any day-to-day worries behind and immerse yourself in being creative. Spaces on our workshops and courses are limited so that our creative team of artists and makers can offer you the hands-on help and support you need to make the most of your time with us. Our taster and introductory workshops focus on teaching creative skills and methods you can continue practising at home, using affordable materials and equipment. Where more expensive equipment is required we will mention this in the workshop description. All the equipment and materials you need are included in the price, unless stated otherwise. Light refreshments from local suppliers are provided. On full day workshops you are welcome to bring your own lunch to eat inside or out. There is also a wide range of independent sit-in or takeaway delis, cafés, and restaurants, plus a range of supermarkets all within a 5-10 minute walk. Accessibility The workshop space is on the first-floor of our Georgian mews home and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Blue badge holders can park outside our front door on the single yellow line by arrangement. Allergies The workshop space is in our open plan living space and is not nut free. Please let us know about any skin or food allergies before booking. We offer a dairy-free milk and gluten free snack alternative. Minimum number no refund policy To ensure we can always pay our creatives a fair fee, we require a minimum number of bookings for each workshop and for this reason bookings are non-refundable. Should we have to cancel due to low numbers, we will offer you the option to swap to an alternative date or workshop, or to request a refund. We do our very best to avoid cancellations. Since we often get late bookings, we keep our workshops on sale for as long as possible. I am a professional artist with a PhD in Ceramics, and I teach experimental drawing and ceramics at a community arts centre. As well as being a fully qualified art teacher, she has an MA in the History of Printmaking (Distinction for Thesis, London) and an MA in Fine Art and Education (Distinction, Northumbria). She has worked at Tate Britain’s Print Study Room, Leeds City Art Gallery and Eastthorpe Visual Arts (now West Yorkshire Print Studio). She is a founding member of Cumbria Printmakers. In 2009 she set up Art Educators North West, a network for Artist Educators and Art Teachers in Cumbria and Lancashire. She is Chair of the Tullie House Community Board. Tricia Johnson is an artist working across an extensive variety of arts disciplines. She studied Art & Design in the Midlands before moving to the Sussex coast and gaining a B.A. (Hons) Degree. She then went on to achieve various teaching qualifications. She enjoys the challenge and exploration found in absorbing new methods and processes. This has enabled her over the past 20 years to teach a wide variety of art courses across West Sussex. Her sculpture work featured nationally on ITV’s morning programme and exhibitions include West Dean College and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, West Sussex. She also had the privilege of exhibiting her work in the Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition, Tokushima, Japan. Along with exhibitions at; Banks Mill Studios Derby, The Art House Wakefield, neo: Gallery Bolton, Gallery@OXO Oxo Tower Wharf South Bank London, Hong Kong Baptist University Hong Kong and Cube gallery Moscow. After a period focusing on other disciplines, Tricia returned to printmaking and the joy of the process is what pushes her work forward creatively. Learning different printing methods has helped her to begin experimenting with distinctive approaches to her prints and printing style. Tricia continues to enjoy drawing and working painterly with a variety of mixed media, developing her own instinctive style over many other art disciplines.

Workshops are hosted at Rocket House and include light refreshments. Abstract Acrylics - Seascapes I will teach you the basics of colour mixing and 3 abstract painting techniques to give you a foundation on which to build. You will also learn how to present your work at it's best, including framed, wrap around canvas and greetings card. Our colour pallet will be inspired by the sea and nature. Napkin Origami I will guide you fold by fold to create a bounty of origami designs including Rose, Lily, Pinwheel, Bunny and Butterfly. This new skill will help you dress your dinner table and is a great party trick or ice breaker to amaze your friends. Christmas Wreaths I will welcome you to Rocket House, dressed for the season, to learn how to make your own Christmas Wreath. We will start with a luxurious hot chocolate and mince pie, under the oak beams and baubles. You can choose a traditional wreath with pine cones or more decorative version with ribbon, cinnamon sticks and orange slices. The choice is yours.

The workshops are an excellent opportunity for adults/children to interact and socialise with their peers, through fun activities. Some of the activities that can be undertaken with the clay are designed so that individuals can have a go, on an individual basis, at creating with the clay. But it can also be used as a group craft experience too, where everyone contributes to a masterpiece. The latter approach is great for building up social interaction within individuals and for them to learn about team work, sharing and cooperation. It’s also such a sense of achievement for them to be involved in a group project and to feel very pleased with their contribution, however small or large. Thus, increasing self-esteem, and self-worth as a result. Taking part in these workshops can have significant benefits. For example, holding the craft tools, wire or scissors in their hands can help with fine-tuning motor skills. It also helps improve coordination and strength which will have long-lasting benefits, such as helping ability to write and use a pen. Working with the clay can also reinforce colour recognition, colour mixing, proportions, sequencing, listening skills and team work, communication and social skills. Workshops are fun and enjoyable for all participants and will help to boost an individual’s confidence in their own abilities.

It all started with the little sketches and poems on the wall, where my bed was up against in Jakarta, Indonesia, which I regularly visited with a biro. I would draw around the cracks and any peeling paint on that wall, refusing for it to be repainted. It all started with the exciting and inquisitive union of a misplaced pair of scissors and the innocent green t-shirt I was wearing at the time, as a child. Years later, my mum then decided to get me a set of rapidograph pens as my choice of ‘creative weapon’, possibly to keep me away from misplaced scissors. So, I carried on in my teens where I would draw on pretty much anything, even on my friends at school. I would then daydream during geography while I gleefully sketch away on my textbooks, table, and bags, with this wonderful gift. I started the design studio and business in early 2011, after receiving my first wallpaper commission from a design-boutique in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. Following the widespread acclaim the work garnered through various exhibitions since, I then established Moody Monday in 2014. After graduating with a degree in Design for Textiles from Heriot-Watt University in 2006, I undertook numerous freelance projects and work experience opportunities with notable design companies. I joined a major interiors company, as part of their communication and design team in 2008, and then decided to follow my dream and set-up on my own in 2011. Little did I know that I would embark on a career as a printed textiles designer as an adult. To me, a wall is never just ‘a wall’, a piece of fabric, furniture, right to an unassuming piece of trash is never just that, they are a world of visual possibilities, a treasure trove of delights! I love making the connections between objects and subjects that are unconventionally meant for each other and see what new wonders would exist in the world from that exploration, like an alchemist. Challenging what ‘beauty’ really means in relation to the chosen subject matter and how it resonates with the eye of the beholder. Being a visual alchemist through my designs and craft gives me a sense of excitement, fulfillment and connection to the wider world beyond my own imagination. Old habits die hard it seems. So, I carried on in my teens where I would draw on pretty much anything, even on my friends at school. I would then daydream during geography while I gleefully sketch away on my textbooks, table, and bags, with this wonderful gift. Eliza in studio Photo credit: Cro & Kow, 2021 I’m Eliza, a printed textiles designer and maker, specializing in meticulously crafted hand-printed wallpaper and fabrics and the founder of Moody Monday. I started the design studio and business in early 2011, after receiving my first wallpaper commission from a design-boutique in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. Following the widespread acclaim the work garnered through various exhibitions since, I then established Moody Monday in 2014. After graduating with a degree in Design for Textiles from Heriot-Watt University in 2006, I undertook numerous freelance projects and work experience opportunities with notable design companies. I joined a major interiors company, as part of their communication and design team in 2008, and then decided to follow my dream and set-up on my own in 2011. Little did I know that I would embark on a career as a printed textiles designer as an adult. To me, a wall is never just ‘a wall’, a piece of fabric, furniture, right to an unassuming piece of trash is never just that, they are a world of visual possibilities, a treasure trove of delights! I love making the connections between objects and subjects that are unconventionally meant for each other and see what new wonders would exist in the world from that exploration, like an alchemist. Challenging what ‘beauty’ really means in relation to the chosen subject matter and how it resonates with the eye of the beholder. Being a visual alchemist through my designs and craft gives me a sense of excitement, fulfillment and connection to the wider world beyond my own imagination. Old habits die hard it seems.
