This course provides the delegate with the theoretical and practical skills to undertake non-licensed works with ACM's. Persons requiring this type of training would include trade operatives undertaking tasks with ACM's as defined in HSG210 and in accordance with CAR 2012 Reg 3(2). In addition to the Asbestos Awareness, those employees whose work will knowingly disturb ACMs, and which is defined as non-licensable work or NNLW, should receive additional task-specific information, instruction and training.

Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 sets down requirements for asbestos awareness training. Basically, any employer involved in work where there might be a risk of disturbing asbestos, such as general building, maintenance, demolition, or refurbishment, is required by law to ensure that all affected employees are educated and trained appropriately. More recently the importance of adherence to the awareness measures has been emphasised in the Health & Safety Executive’s ‘Duty to Manage Asbestos Enforcement Initiative’ and it is now clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated. In fact, several perpetrators have already been served with improvement notices, or in the worst-case scenario a probation notice, which results in an immediate and costly halt to work. Employee training is believed to be the best way to target the estimated 1.8 million workers who are potentially at risk of life-threatening illnesses following exposure to asbestos in their day-to-day work. These people include plasterers, roofers, plumbers, electricians, demolition, maintenance men and joiners but also the less obvious workers such as computer installers, ground workers, landscapers, and fire & burglar alarm installers. An awareness level knowledge of asbestos is very important for anyone self-employed, working as a contractor, or anyone involved in maintenance or refurbishment of buildings. An awareness of where you can commonly find asbestos and what to look out for can keep you safe and reduce your risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Asbestos awareness training is required to be given to employees whose work could foreseeably expose them to asbestos. In particular, it should be given to all demolition workers and those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the fabric of the building because asbestos containing materials may become exposed during their work.

P404 Air Sampling of Asbestos and MMMF and Requirements for a Certificate of Reoccupation Following Clearance of Asbestos is the industry standard qualification for those whose work involves air sampling and clearance testing, such as asbestos analysts. In addition to holding the qualification, they are required to undertake and provide evidence of annual refresher training. RP404 Refresher is a new course, specifically designed to meet this requirement. RP404 Refresher enables candidates to revise and update their knowledge on air sampling and clearance testing techniques, and to receive a certificate of course completion by passing a written examination, which covers both the theory and practice of air sampling and clearance testing.
