Based in our home town of Leeds, we are a nationally recognised community enterprise. Seagulls was founded by Cat and Kate around a kitchen table in 2002. We have three core aims: PEOPLE- to provide training, volunteering and employment opportunities for some of the most marginalised people across Leeds. PLANET- to divert waste materials from landfill for the benefit of the Leeds community, raising awareness for recycling and reuse, whilst reducing carbon emissions. PROFIT- to generate income and ultimately become a self sustaining enterprise. We seek to improve the environment through the recycling and reuse of paint materials. Alongside the creation of work for disadvantaged people and groups; in addition to selling low-cost high-quality paint products to the local community. So far we have diverted 4 million litres of paint from landfill. This is the equivalent to filling 50,000 household baths with paint! With people and the environment at the core of our business, we are well placed to educate people. For example, teaching people the importance of reusing and recycling unwanted household materials. We have built a unique and creative local enterprise whilst thinking outside of the box, both in our approach to business and people.

To help people understand the climate crisis, we run Climate Emergency Training for various audiences including youth workers, community groups and secondary schools – our Climate Ready Classrooms programme is being delivered to half the secondary schools in Scotland. Our Eco-Schools Scotland programme is part of the largest sustainable schools programme in the world (run by Foundation for Environment Education or FEE) and enables schools in Scotland to take action on climate change and Learning for Sustainability and to attain the international Green Flag Award.

We Create is an arts action group that formed in 2016. It is a collaborative partnership between Hardwick Gallery (University of Gloucestershire) and residents in the communities of St Peter’s and St Paul’s (Cheltenham), in association with Take A Part. We Create work together to share time, skills and resources, co-commissioning ambitious projects and public events with artists and allies, and people that live, work and study in the area. The group incorporated as We Create Cheltenham CIC in 2020. We aim to stimulate interest and understanding of the rich heritage of St Peter’s and St Paul’s, to connect residents, and to catalyse opportunities for people to engage with creativity. In our projects we aim to minimise their environmental and human costs through responsible guardianship of the planet and its resources, respect for our communities, and care for the people we work with. We work towards environmental improvement and net zero carbon emissions for our projects by learning about and exploring alternatives to mass produced and harmful materials.

It’s our vision to help our customers reduce their environmental footprint giving them the choice to buy home-grown flowers over imported foreign flowers. This small decision will have a big impact on the reduction of carbon emissions from unhealthy production techniques and transport fumes. We strive to continually reduce our environmental footprint by choosing recyclable or compostable packaging, streamlining deliveries, avoiding synthetic chemicals like the plague and whenever possible sourcing product from within Britain, Scotland ideally. Farming counterintuitively can be detrimental to the land, I’m talking about the huge hedge-less fields, large machinery and single crop type of farming you see everywhere. At SCF we aim to be the opposite of that, we have 50+ different varieties of flowers for the wildlife to feed and live from, we use minimum till methods to protect the important worm population, we use compost to add fertility, and beneficial insects rather than synthetic chemicals to control pests and weed suppression material to negate the need for weed killer. We feel it is our duty as custodians of the land to help in the fight to save the bees, this year we will be undertaking a bee keeping course and hope to establish our hives by mid-summer. With such an abundance of flowers and surrounding fields, we should be able to provide a sanctuary for at least a couple of hives which will increase the pollination of those surrounding food crops. We are buzzing!
