The spirit of the Centre’s aims has remained unchanged for over 100 years: Swarthmore seeks to inspire lives through friendly learning within a commitment to equality of opportunity Swarthmore is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning sessions as well as the courses and activities. Our main aim is to encourage people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions. We work on a friendly, human scale. Many volunteers currently support the Centre’s work, and we welcome their contributions of time and energy. The Centre was founded by members of the Quaker movement in 1909 with the aim of including and involving people in learning activities and making sure that people were treated with equality and respect. Two members of the Society of Friends remain on our democratically elected ‘Council’ of Trustees, made up of Centre members and representatives of community organisations with shared aims. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our Grade II Listed Building has a fascinating history and is made up of six four-story terraced houses with additional dance and art studios to the rear. We have specialist facilities for pottery, jewellery, stained glass and sculpture, and the atmosphere is intentionally homely and informal. We also work within the local community on negotiated projects, including arts and ‘Skills for Life’ programmes. Many groups and individuals make use of the Centre as a community resource, providing facilities for a wide variety of local groups. Swarthmore attracts a social mix of people who come to the Centre because of their shared interests in learning rather than their background. We offer room hire at competitive rates, and welcome the public to use our café facilities. Inspired by the natural colours and textures of the earth, Naked Clay Ceramics is a collection of quiet, tactile, minimal style tableware and homeware in black stoneware and white porcelain. Using a combination of handbuilding and slip casting, everything is made by hand in my studio in Bedfordshire. At high temperatures the clay dances in the kiln. When they leave the kiln these pieces don’t conform to the symmetrical perfection and uniformity found in factory made items. Each is individual and unique. The pieces are fired with no glaze on the outside so that the feel of the natural, fired clay can be appreciated. I hope that tactile connection brings an opportunity to pause, breathe and savour a small moment in the hustle and bustle of life. I hand make a limited number of items 3-4 times a year, available online and at events. These small batches are crafted with care, knowing that each item will be an intentional and valued addition to someone’s home or collection.

Founded in 2016, Breakdown Bolton is a community interest company which is peer led by qualified and experienced artists who have had experience of mental health issues. We work in many different art forms and aim to offer our participants high quality arts classes, exhibition, and cultural opportunities. We do this by promoting high level creativity, individual expression, and empowerment through art, in a safe and positive environment for those across the Greater Manchester region. At Breakdown Bolton we focus on increasing accessibility to art for those with lived experience of mental health and substance misuse issues. We are passionate about breaking down the barriers, stigma and prejudice and raising awareness of these issues. Breakdown Bolton can provide a stepping stone towards further artistic development for a person whose education, employment, and creative practices have been interrupted by poor mental health or substance misuse issues. At Breakdown Bolton we have a diverse range of skills within the team which we use to develop and deliver projects of the highest quality. We are professional artists educated at University level, having had visual artwork and writing published and commissioned. Our members have been awarded both individual and collective grants from bodies such as the Arts Council and are Unltd Alumni. In 2017, Breakdown Bolton was nominated for a National Diversity Award. Since then, we have been recipients of a New Art Space through Castlefield Gallery, worked closely with NeoArtists in Bolton, and have forged strong working partnerships with regional arts education organisations such as theatres, galleries, and local community services.

caleidoscope- supporting autistic children

Welcome to Caleidoscope! We look forward to supporting you! Caleidoscope is a non for profit oranisation supporting families with autistic children and professionals who support autistic individuals. We promote equality and inclusion and break the stigma of autism through training for parents/ carers and professionals and events for autistic children. The founder and director is Aleksandra Malanska, a qualified teacher, autism consultant, mindfulness practitioner and trainer, with 25 years of experience in education including SEN. Aleksandra completed post graduate studies in Autism and is trained in various interventions including LEGO Therapy, Mindfulness, Low Arousal Approach,Therapeutic Art, Intensive Interaction that she individualises to an autistic person. She is also Mental Health First Aider and a certified Mindfulness Teacher. She strongly believes that raising awareness and education can change people's attitudes and approach and passionately deliveres training for parents and professionals.

About Linnet Workshops was set up in 2019 by Devon based artist Grace Coombes. With a life long passion for making and creating, Grace has developed a wide range of art and craft based Workshops that focus on the varied processes of making imagery through print, collage, book arts and more.   Grace enrolled in an Art Foundation Course at Falmouth University and then went on to study Illustration at Brighton University. She later developed a love for printmaking which feeds into many of the creative sessions on offer. Her prints have been exhibited at MAKE Southwest (formerly Devon Guild of Craftsman) and Ocean Studios, Plymouth.   Choosing and using materials with the environment in mind is extremely important to the Linnet Workshops ethos. Where possible recycled papers, cards and many other materials are used. Left over materials are saved for future workshops or recycled.
