Alien spoons? Well, only because it is a memorable name and some of the knife grasps feel a bit alien to start with. You will soon get to grips with them and the focus of this workshop is learning to use safe and efficient carving techniques with hand tools - the axe, straight knives and hook knives... maybe also a drawknife on a shave horse. By following good technique you will avoid injuries and with regular stretching this will help you to look after your body as well as the tools. You should leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home. The tools are relatively cheap and easy to use in a small space. You will have access to a range of tools, but primarily use the Mora wood carving knives (106/120/164s) and be shown traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log with a froe or axe, trimming this down with an axe, and on to carving finer details and decorations with knives. Additional skills in building a shave horse and other green wood working can also be taught. This course is run from close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. Course Objectives The delegates are able to demonstrate knowledge of the development and spread of fire. The delegates are able to demonstrate knowledge of the causes of fires in wind turbines and the dangers related to this. The delegates are able to identify any sign of a fire in a wind turbine environment. The delegates are able to demonstrate knowledge of the contingency plans in a wind turbine environment including smoke detection and emergency escape procedures. The delegates are able to demonstrate correct actions on discovering a fire including correct operation and fire extinguishing by means of the firefighting equipment in a WTG.

This is for current term time or summer term time students only. Our workshop is equipped with everything a jeweller could wish for. You will have your very own solid jewellers workbench to work on to complete your projects and your own tool kit meaning you won’t have to wait for tools. Your bench is also equipped with its own pendant motor. In the workshop you will also find soldering equipment on each bench, a wide range of professional stone setting tools for various stone setting styles, a wide range of hand tools, texturing tools, a rolling mill, a hydraulic press, polishing equipment, dapping tools and punches, all of which will allow you the chance to create your designs within a professional setting. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: You must be enrolled on our term time class or summer term or have experience. CLASS SIZE: 7 WHAT IS INCLUDED? All tools and consumables are supplied Please bring refreshments The cost of this course does not include materials. WHAT TO BRING: For safety reasons, during each class, you are required to wear appropriate footwear, we request that no open toed shoes are worn within Workshop 925. Long hair should also be tied back when working with the equipment. You may also wish to bring a notebook. We have handouts for many demonstrations, but there are always many tips and tricks given verbally by the tutor, which some might like to keep note of. Please bring any PPE, snacks and drinks to each session. We regret we can’t offer tea and coffee at the moment due to Coronavirus. Learn an ancient technique, used by the Romans. It is very low tech and wonderful items of jewellery with a professional finish can be produced in a few hours. Students make moulds in plaster or cuttlefish to their own designs, then lead free pewter is poured into the moulds using hand gravity casting. The moulds can be reused to make pendants, earrings, brooches, keyrings and fridge magnets.

Learn how to make really fun and creative bowls from rope and bits of scrap fabric. I will teach you all you need to know and I will supply all you need to get going. It is SO fun and SO versatile! You decide on the shape, size and colours! This is a very practical and hands on class which will see you making stuff in no time. All tools, use of machines and materials are included. The class will finish around 1pm

During the day we will cover the main Gel Printing techniques, as well as elements of colour and composition. You’ll have ample time to experiment during the day, creating dozens of prints, as you explore colour, texture, and design while creating your own very personal and unique pieces.
