There is a high demand for classes and we need to operate a little differently due to pressure for spaces in most age groups. To help us manage this, we will be asking you to complete a simple registration process to register your interest and to confirm when next block of lessons will start. Please REGISTER HERE. Classes are held on Saturday 10 am, 11am and Sunday 5 pm. Please select your preferred time, however please note that we cannot guarantee availability (especially on Sunday) so you may be offered an alternative time instead. Our classes run in terms or blocks of 10 weeks starting from start of September every year and continue until July. ABOUT THE SWIMMING PROGRAM Our lessons follow Swim Ireland Learn to Swim Programme and run in terms of 10 weeks for most of the year. All our teachers hold Swim Ireland Qualifications and are fully Garda vetted. Swimmers can start from the age of 4 with armbands and progress through the five stages of the Learn to Swim Programme. Progression from each stage is based on assessment by the teachers as the swimmers come to terms with new concepts. Once capable in all four strokes, each child is given the opportunity to move to the Development Squad and begin their journey as a competitive swimmer with in the club. In October 2013 the CReSTeD Council revised their criteria for inclusion of schools and teaching centres within the Register. In many respects the changes may seem cosmetic, a case of re-organisation to place similar criteria together. However, on closer inspection you will find a major difference. In the past we have referred to dyslexia as the focus of our assessment within schools, we updated this a few years ago to read ‘dyslexia(SpLD)’. Our criteria now reads simply ‘SpLD’, the support for children with dyslexia works within a wider frameset that should include all learning difficulties. We have not forgotten our roots, we are still a dyslexia charity, we are simply taking into account the wider picture. Accrediting Schools and Teaching Centres for their Learning Support Provision. We maintain a register of schools and teaching centres which meet our criteria for the teaching of pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties. All schools and centres included in the Register are visited regularly to ensure they continue to meet the criteria set by CReSTeD. We act as a source of names for educational establishments which parents can use as their first step towards making a placement decision which will be critical to their child’s educational future. The majority of schools on the register are mainstream schools that are also able to give excellent help to pupils with SpLD: dyslexia and also – when combined with dyslexia – dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADD, and pragmatic and semantic language difficulties. In addition we include teaching centres where children can find additional support outside of and /or in addition to their day to day schooling. The register provides guidance for parents who are looking for a school or teaching centre for their child with SpLD and has become established as a first source of such guidance. For example: Parents who contact the British Dyslexia Association, Dyslexia Action or the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity to enquire about schools will be referred to CReSTeD. Many local authorities rely on the CReSTeD register – which is published annually – to inform their financial decisions about funding a placement for dyslexia. We are offering both in-person and telehealth (secure videoconference) assessment and therapy services. Our office staff will talk with clients about which option may work best for them. Commitment to Anti-Racism: The MU Psychological Services Clinic (PSC) and Center for Evidence-Based Youth Mental Health (CEBYMH) are outraged and saddened by the multiple occurrences of police brutality and injustice against Black and Brown communities (Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Michael Brown, and too many others). These are the result of long-standing structurally racist systems that devalue Black and Brown lives. The disproportionate impact of these inequities is felt not only in the justice system, but also in education, medicine, and mental health care. As psychology providers, we believe that the ultimate manner by which to heal racial trauma is for individuals and the systems within which they work to recognize and eliminate explicit and implicit bias, prejudice, racism, and discrimination. UK GLOBAL LEARNING ASSOCIATION FOR SCHOOLS (UKGLAS) is a co-operative network which exists to support a range of professionals who have a role in supporting the international and/or global dimension in education. The Association was founded in 1996 and until 2008 was known as UKAEIES (UK Association for European and International Education in Schools). UKGLAS is registered as a charity in the UK (registration number: 1063668). The overall mission of the Association is to support the membership as they work with schools and school networks of all types to develop an international outlook and prepare their learners for life in an increasingly globalised society. Regular inputs from these organisations and opportunities for networking are part of the benefits of membership. The current membership of around 25 includes personnel working in a range of over-lapping contexts. They include international education consultants, Local Authority international co-ordinators and advisers, workers from Development Education Centres and languages specialists. Prior to the 2019 UKGLAS held regular meetings (usually three per annum in London) plus an annual conference. During the pandemic these meetings and conferences were held online. We resumed face to face meetings (with optional virtual attendance) on 18th October 2022. Please see the Membership and Meetings pages for details GLOBAL LEARNING ASSOCIATION (GLA) is the not-for-profit trading arm of UKGLAS established in 2012 (Company number 7468905). UKGLAS membership entitles individuals to apply to become GLA Associates at no extra cost. The GLA is able to bid for commercial contracts and pay suitably qualified Associates for their work. The majority of our Associates are also qualified teachers and some have recent experience of headships or other senior management posts. The GLA has been part of several British Council programmes including all the iterations of Connecting Classrooms. We also held the contract for the assessment of the International School Award up to August 2022 and look forward to bidding into a successor contract in the coming weeks. Our EU work included many Key Action 1 training courses and we hope to re-start these outside of the UK in 2023.
