Angie Rigard is the new Director of Charnwood Tutors, Loughborough. She has been involved in education for twenty years both in the UK and in international schools in Shanghai, Dubai and Hong Kong, respectively. Angie has taught GCSE English Language and Literature, as well as A Level English Literature and Media Studies. Throughout her time in schools, she has been Head of English and Head of Year, as well as playing key roles in mentoring students during the transition from Primary to Secondary school, curriculum design and whole school SEN policy. Angie is also an experienced BACP Registered Integrative Psychotherapist trained in Psychodynamic, Person-Centred, Existentialist, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Attachment and CBT modes of therapy. She has a private practice and works for a number of outside agencies, including EAP Provision, working with children and young people and supporting adults suffering Critical Incident Trauma. Angie has recently been a tutor on a CPCAB Level 4 Counselling Diploma at the commended NCCS Counselling Training Institute in Northamptonshire.

In the summer of 2020, faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, someone set up an online course called “Quran2020” with an old Sony Handycam, hoping to deliver a beneficial course to a small group of university students. Very soon, 3,000+ people registered for the course with demand for more. We know from first-hand experience that the opportunity to learn Islam in a clear, structured and accessible manner isn’t always available, particularly to those who are occupied with work, family life, or their studies – time never seems to allow some of us to learn despite our yearning for it. Our current avenues for learning Islam are not perfect: YouTube is far too distracting, the local masjid may not have the resources or speak our language, and local institutes may offer multi-year scholarship programs not built for someone looking for the basics. Starting with the Essentials, we hope to offer a viable and fresh solution for those without the local resources, searching for alternatives.

After leaving the UK in 2010 and embarking on a backpacking trip to Indonesia alone spending 12 days in the forest with three local guides. Wanda, Bendy and Ping yes that was their names travelling through the forest and camping at a new spot each night. Which added some life-changing experiences for me a nieve 17-18-year-old alone in a foreign country with me not knowing any part of the local language. When I got back to the UK I decided on this as a hopeful career path which I am still working toward now. I decided I wanted to work in the travel industry, where my passion in life truly lies. So I came back to the UK after that trip and immediately planned for other journeys. Still living with family I decided to explore a bit of Latin America which I really enjoyed the culture the idea of working out here was overwhelming. So in 2011, I went to Costa Rica. But where the trips truly took an expedition type feel was when planning from start to finish around 8 months prior to going away. I planned and prepared for a journey to the Darien gap Panama-Colombia border region. Which went as best as could in this region. I then began planning my return to head to Guyana where we canoed a river we, meaning myself 2 local guides travelled for 11.5 days and travelled 288km to be exact. I knew that my dream job would now be to work as an expedition leader where I could live out my passion for leading in remote and exciting places. I now had an abundance of remote travel experience and the required knowledge and soon the qualifications that it takes to do this. But I was still without the valuable experience required to teach and lead people in remote places. I have now done my ML training so that I would soon have the qualification to make this a career choice of mine.
