Garforth Academy mainly serves the community of Garforth with some pupils travelling further to school from communities such as Micklefield, Kippax, Colton, Whitkirk, Swillington, Aberford and Crossgates. Whilst the majority of pupils live within walking distance we do have a broad intake of primary schools with current year 7 pupils coming from 27 primary schools. The Key Stage 2 APS on entry is broadly in line with national average but some year groups are slightly below national average on entry. The academy is larger than average, and has around 300 pupils per year group in Key Stages Three and Four with a large 6th form in excess of 400 pupils. We serve a diverse community and whilst a large proportion of pupils come from affluent backgrounds, some pupils live in areas containing pockets of deprivation, characterised by high unemployment, an inadequate employment base, low average income levels, poor physical and mental health and a degraded urban environment. It is therefore important that our curriculum meets needs the needs of all learners from a wide range of backgrounds. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is below the national average (16% v 29%) as is the number currently in receipt of Free School Meals (7% v 12%). Pupils within the academy are mainly White British, with only 2.7% of pupils having EAL. The number of pupils with an EHCP is 1.3%, and a small number of pupils requiring behavioural and emotional support attend The Elland Academy in Leeds, which is a registered Alternative Provision within Delta Academies Trust. We serve our local community and work closely with partners to plan a set of learning experiences that meet the needs of our pupils. In addition, we use local, national and international labour market intelligence to plan courses to best prepare our young people for life beyond school. We have the highest standards and expectations for all pupils and we strive to provide a curriculum that respects the needs of all pupils as well as one that encourages young people to seek continuous development and improvement.

The word ‘tyro’ is the Latin word meaning ‘a beginner or a novice’ and at Tyro Studios we have created a space for all to learn without judgement or pressure to be anything but a beginner. TYRO Studios is a studio / retail space based in Shipley, West Yorkshire, where we host creative workshops and lifestyle events. It is also home to a curated range of gifts & lifestyle goods. At TYRO Studios we run different workshops and events from floral arranging, to modern calligraphy, water colour painting, macrame & much much more. Our spaces are inclusive and safe for all people. All our workshops are run by incredibly talented and passionate tutors and are perfect for beginners. Our tickets are fully inclusive, you will not need to buy anything from us when you arrive; this includes all your materials and refreshments - all you need to provide is enthusiasm. Our workshops are aimed at adults (18+) as we serve alcohol. Our classes are small (6-10 people) to ensure that everyone gets as much direct assistance from our tutors as possible and run from 1.5 hours to 3 hours maximum (please check your specific workshop for timings) We cannot wait to meet and host you! The Governors are pleased to accept applications on behalf of young people for places in the first five years of the school (Years 7-11 of the National Curriculum). Vacancies do become available from time to time for a variety of reasons. However, there is rarely an immediate vacancy and therefore the names of applicants are placed on a waiting list. When a vacancy occurs, applicants are contacted and invited to attend a test. The vacant place will be offered to the candidate who demonstrates the ability and aptitude to allow them to be a success at the school. Parents of pupils who are unsuccessful may ask for their son/daughter to remain on the list to be considered for entry in the following academic year should a vacancy arise. Students will not automatically be left on the list and will be removed at the end of the academic year, unless a request is made to remain on the list. Students will be allowed only one attempt at the test in any given academic year to a maximum of two attempts in total. Please note that it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure all information is up to date including change of address and any changes should be communicated to Sarah Elder, Administrative Assistant, admin@crossleyheath.org.uk The school currently operates an option system at the end of year 8 and any decision to accept a student will be dependent on whether or not their curriculum needs can be appropriately met by the school. Teacher assessment levels in Maths, English and Science will also be taken into account. Applicants who sat the 11+ entrance exam and were successful, but were not allocated a place due to over subscription are placed on a waiting list and priority is given to these candidates in the event of a vacancy in the first term. After this time those who wish to still be considered must complete an application form and return to school.
