We feel as though there is a lot of pressure on young people to make the correct career choices yet so many still do not have the tools or access to make informed decisions. Lack of access to people from different professions means that young people do not know what certain professionals do or what it takes to get there, and a lack of confidence means that individuals do not put themselves forward for roles that they are absolutely capable at achieving - with a little hard work of course! Breaking Through Careers would like for people from all backgrounds to have the opportunity to end up in a career that is truly right for them. We will have succeeded if just a few more people from any and all backgrounds: Discover and understand a profession that they either a) have not had access to, b) have not taken the time to explore, or c) would otherwise not have heard of because of their upbringing or environment. Know what is required for them to enter that industry. See themselves in other people currently in that profession, giving them the confidence they need to put themselves forward.

You Can Cook is a celebration of food, people and cultures!  You Can Cook was established in 2007 and was set up to encourage and empower local communities to make informed choices about their food and health.  Healthy eating initiatives are promoted through every service from cookery classes, demonstrations, workshops, talks and seminars with training for young people in primary and secondary schools, youth groups, families, elderly, disadvantaged communities and individuals with allergies and food intolerances. A safe and relaxed environment is created where people from all ages can come together, socialise, rediscover and explore a healthier approach to cooking with simple and nutritious ingredients using seasonal and local produce. You Can Cook has created an off-shoot, You Can Grow which helps to raise awareness of how and where our food comes from and also introduces the concept of growing food free of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in client’s gardens and allotments.  This is done by teaching clients how to convert their outdoor/indoor paces into edible gardens or working together in community allotments using organic/permaculture principles. Another initiative to come out of this off-shoot is the launch of a book for growers in Scotland, aimed at aspiring growers of all ages, beginners and experts too. The book is a simple, practical guide to help purchasers take the first steps to growing their own food and have fun at the same time. There is no need to buy expensive starter kits to get growing as the book is full of easy to find and use household items that are normally thrown away and which can be recycled to help in the growing process. This is the first book published by a Community Interest Company and Social Enterprise aimed at Scottish growers. The book is priced at £12.99 and proceeds from sales mean that the Organisation is able to reach more families and communities across Scotland, helping them to grow and cook their own delicious food. The book is available in all big and independent bookstores in the UK, including online through our website.

ECA has always been a place of experimentation and collaboration, celebrated for enabling students from different disciplines to work alongside and with each other, and for creating strong linkages with other institutions. We trace our history back to the Trustees’ Academy founded in the 1760s which, over the course of the next century, operated from some of the most iconic buildings in the city, including the University’s Old College and what is now the Royal Scottish Academy. The first Professorship in an ECA subject area was created for Music in 1839 in the name of John Reid, with the Watson Gordon Chair of Fine Art founded some forty years later, the first of its kind in the British Isles and a turning point in the teaching of the History of Art. Following the establishment of the Reid Concert series in 1841, which continues to this day, the Reid Concert Hall was built in 1859. We’ve been known as Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) since 1906, following a major reorganisation of higher art education in Scotland. At the time, we were governed by the city Council and divided into four Schools: Drawing and Painting, Design and Crafts, Architecture, and Sculpture. We moved into what is still our Main Building in 1909, when the first of our annual Revel parties took place and, by 1913, our Cast Collection had been installed in the Sculpture Court.

We currently run 5 of school clubs across North Edinburgh and 2 in Juniper Green. Please see individual clubs for specific details on each. All of our clubs are registered with the Care Inspectorate and all of our workers are registered with the Scottish Social Services Council. Our clubs offer children a wide range of fun and exciting learning opportunities based on their needs and interests. They also provide space for children to relax and spent time with their friends. A typical activity programme will offer children opportunities for indoor and outdoor play consisting of a mixture of board games, arts and crafts, loose parts, sports, music and outings. We actively promote children’s participation, not only in the planning, delivery and evaluation of our activity programmes but also in wider aspects of the clubs such as recruiting new members of staff and buying resources. During holiday periods we take children on outings and encourage them to try out new experiences such as abseiling and canoeing. We have fully trained Forest School leaders within our staff team who offer additional opportunities for adventurous outdoor experiences. A healthy snack is included in our fees. On Fridays and during holiday periods children are required to bring a packed lunch. We are a team of highly experienced, enthusiastic and professional teachers who provide music lessons in a wide range of instruments. Our goal at ESM is to bring the love of music into all our student's lives in a fun and enjoyable way as well as providing all the necessary skills to pass exams, perform with confidence and compose music and songs. We are very proud to maintain a 100% pass rate in all our student's instrumental and vocal music exams making us Edinburgh's favourite music school for private music lessons. One - to - one tuition Lessons are available for a range of instruments including voice, piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, saxophone, clarinet, flute, recorder and drums. We offer one to one private lessons in our studio in Meadowbank or online lessons. Groups We offer a range of music group activities including our Baby music groups (for ages 0-5), youth singing groups, performance coaching workshops and summer school music groups. Please contact us to find out the groups that are currently available. Concerts At ESM we believe that learning to make incredible music is just not as rewarding if you don’t share it with others. We provide monthly showcases at Edinburgh's Jazz Bar in addition to end of term concerts. This gives our students plenty of opportunities to showcase their progress and develops our pupils into confident performers. Unfortunately, due to current restrictions surrounding concerts, we are unable to host any concerts at this time.

Our visual art programme presents a diverse and innovative programme of exhibitions, free and open to the public all year round. Exhibiting artists have included Liliane Lijn, Alastair MacLennan, Derrick Guild, Tamsyn Challenger, Haroon Mirza, Pester and Rossi. Summerhall’s year-round live music programme, Nothing Ever Happens Here… has become one of the best places to see exciting, live music in the city, bringing musicians such as Billy Bragg, Sun Kil Moon, The Sun Ra Arkestra, and Charlotte Church to Summerhall’s Dissection Room, whilst helping to provide a platform for young bands in Edinburgh to play with established touring musicians from around the globe. Summerhall won the Dan Crawford Innovation Award at the 2015 Empty Space… Peter Brook Awards, was shortlisted for The Stage Fringe Venue of the Year in 2014 and 2017, was awarded a Cycle Friendly Employer Award by Cycle Scotland in 2019 and won The Herald Scottish Culture Award 2019 for Outstanding Venue. The aim is to be a major cultural destination where audiences meet and mix and where artists and performers are inspired to make and present their best work.
