CoCo has a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to building confidence, self-esteem and support positive lifestyle changes in young people via the conduits of education, sport and culture. Our staff have a background in mentoring and life coaching, project management, social inclusion, vocational training, and sports coaching. Our community based values are manifested in our training activities in the classroom, and our team activities which take place in positive open spaces and parks around Brighton and Hove. CoCo works with a variety of local organisations and stakeholders to achieve its goals and deliver its activities. For example, we work directly with youth clubs, Job Centre Plus, and youth/employment networks (Brighton’s Women’s Centre, the Chamber of Commerce, Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, and The Platform) to engage directly with young people that are interested in career planning, job search, our vocational courses, or sport team building activities. We also have close ties with sports clubs such as Hassocks Tennis Club, Preston Park Tennis Club, Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club, Preston Panthers FC, Withdean FC and Patcham FC. With these clubs we organise team building events, joint sports days and in house training to develop soft and employability skills via sport. Our team has worked with hundreds of young people across Sussex to provide vocational training, mentoring and employability training. Our reach is growing and in 2017 hope to reach even more young people. Specifically, our qualified staff provide VET courses such as City and Guilds Level 1 Principles of Coaching Sport, Level 1-2 Employability Skills and Level 2 Travel and Tourism Destinations. We also provide Coaching and Mentoring Sessions with a qualified life coach, cultural activities and overseas team sports tours in Europe. Our aim is to support young people not in employment, education or training, aged 18-24, early school leavers now long term unemployed, general unemployed young people, and we place special emphasis on the participation of young women and the more socially excluded members of society. We use our links with local colleges, the local authority, community groups and youth networks to support young people into vocational training, improve their confidence and support them into further vocational training, work experience or employment. Theater for Portland FamiliesPlan Your Visit Venue, Directions & Parking NWCT is located at 1819 NW Everett Street, Portland, Oregon, in the historic Northwest Neighborhood Cultural Center in the vibrant Nob Hill neighborhood. Click here for GoogleMap directions. The building is fully accessible, and features a theater with 330 full view seats and 320 limited view seats. Numerous rooms are used as classrooms, performance venues, meeting and event spaces, as well as several administrative offices. Off-street parking and a paid surface lot are available nearby. Limited free parking is available in the NWCT lot located directly behind the theater on NW Flanders. On-street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood. Please note: Parking in Northwest Portland can require patience and planning. NWCT recommends all patrons plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain time. We are located on several major bus lines running through Northwest Portland, and are just a few blocks from the streetcar and MAX lines that run near PGE Park. Visit TriMet’s website to plan your visit using public transportation. NWCT’s location is also bike-friendly, and is located on streets with dedicated bike lanes, racks, and a Biketown station. In 1968 Denise Keenan from St. Augustine’s Church here in Park Ward, began running a pre-school play group. She and a small team of volunteers extended this to community lunches, English classes and social activities in response to local need. When Calderdale became a dispersal area for people seeking asylum in the early 2000’s we started to support people who had arrived locally to settle into life in the UK. In 2009 St Augustine’s Centre became an independent charity, continually evolving and welcoming all, regardless of faith, ethnicity or background. Now Calderdale’s specialist charity working with people seeking asylum and refugees as well as local people, we have 16 staff, 170 volunteers and a community of 650 individuals and families from 57 countries. We offer specialist advice on immigration and asylum support, and one to one support with welfare, housing, health and access to wider services. We provide hot meals, English language classes, training, cultural, social and wellbeing activities, trips and volunteering opportunities. We offer spaces for reflection and a befriending and integration service. As a core member of the Valley of Sanctuary, we want to share stories and build awareness about the experience for those fleeing war and persecution, advocating and campaigning locally and nationally. 52 years on, Denise still volunteers at St Augustines.

Do you want to learn more Yiddish than the occasional Oy Vey? Get a crash-course in Hebrew and/or Arabic before setting off to the Holy Land? Or have you recently moved to this rainy country, and need to work on your English? We have a course for you. Babel’s Blessing is a grassroots language school set up in summer 2015. We run affordable language classes for adults in a number of languages that are politically relevant for our communities. The income we get from these helps us to run our programme of free English classes for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. We see language learning as being about cultural exchange, community building, and a way for members of diaspora communities to reconnect with their/our heritage. In our classes, we talk about politics, culture, art and history through language as it is spoken – valuing street language and varied accents rather than one ‘correct’ version. We apply critical pedagogy methods and principles across all our classes, and we run as a democratic community of learners, where students are actively involved in shaping the learning process. Our teachers are also our team members, administrators, fundraisers, event hosts and blog writers. We are a non-hierarchical organisation and everyone is encouraged to take an active role in the direction of the project.

WHICH ORGANISATIONS: Brought heads of private sector organisations, public sector bodies, political leaders and leaders of NGOs together into a collective learning space. Their common goal was the desire to have a positive impact on their organisations, their countries and their region. We have held these across Sub-Saharan Africa as well as within the region of Southern Africa, Asia (drawing people from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Malaysia) and Latin America. WHO WE WORKED WITH: Leaders, influencers and manager from a diverse cross-section of sectors and occupations. WHAT WE DID: Offered established leaders from the public, private and voluntary sectors who are at or near the CEO level, an opportunity to transform what they and their organisations do. This was done using transformational leadership theory and experiential learning techniques to enable cross-cultural conversations and mutual learning. This enabled each individual to draw on new techniques and cross sector experiences to develop their thinking and practice. OUTCOMES: Leaders who lead with a greater sense of themselves, the systems they work in and the wider network of leaders that they can both influence and draw on as a resource. Shifted the way leaders see their responsibility and accountability not only to their organisation but to the wider context in which they work.
