The ECEC Chinese School was instituted in June of 2017, located in the city of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. IN THE GREAT WAR, 730 Old Wilsonians and staff went to fight. 120 never came back. To this day they are commemorated on the school’s War Memorial, which was opened in the old school (Camberwell) in 1921 following donations from the OW community. It was one of the few items brought from the old school to Sutton, demonstrating its spiritual and moral importance to our community. This week, assemblies led by the Head allowed the school to remember the fallen. The Headmaster’s talk focused on the significant (but often overlooked) contribution of troops and labourers from all over the world during both World Wars. India (modern day India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) contributed 1.4 million troops up to 1919 and saw action at Ypres, Neuve La Chapelle, Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. Fighting on both sides, two million men from the African continent were involved, with ten percent being killed or dying of disease. Mr Cole has spoken in the past of the cultural sensitivities shown to Muslim, Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were treated in a military hospital based in George IV’s extravagant pavilion in Brighton, but this year’s assembly focussed on the Double V Campaign to ensure civil rights for those who were returning from battle. Mr Cole emphasised the importance of commemorating all who fought in this and subsequent conflicts and reminded all present of the need not just for respect, but for gratitude to those who enable us to live in a free and tolerant society. We are reminded that many men and women from around the world gave their tomorrow for our today. At the end of the assembly the Head read out a selection of names of those who fell from our community, a wreath was placed by the School Captain (accompanied by members of the CCF) at the school’s War Memorial and silence observed after the sounding of the Last Post.

History Northwestern State University was established in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School, an institution created specifically for the training of teachers, in a time when public education was an increasing priority across the nation. The location of the school is tied to the roots of the city of Natchitoches and is the oldest continually occupied site for higher education in Louisiana. When legislation was introduced in 1884 to create a state Normal School, local civic and business leaders marshaled support to purchase the 100-acre site of a former convent and school and offer it as the site of the new state school. The selection was announced in October 1884 and a short, two-month session began in March 1885 with an enrollment of 60 students. In 1921, the Louisiana State Normal School, which initially offered a 2-year degree program to prepare educators, began offering a 4-year educator degree program and was renamed the Louisiana Normal College. In 1944, the further expansion of degree offerings led to the school’s name being changed to Northwestern State College. In 1970, the college achieved university status and was renamed the title it still holds today: Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Ever-growing, Northwestern State also serves the region at its off-campus instructional sites in Shreveport, Alexandria and Fort Polk. Since its inception, Northwestern State University has had a tremendous social and economic impact on northwest Louisiana and beyond. Llanthony Secunda Priory in Gloucester is the remains of a once large and important Augustinian Priory which was founded outside the city walls in 1136. It is a scheduled monument with listed buildings that has played an important part in Gloucester’s history for over 900 years. Our Re-formation Project is bringing Llanthony back to life. The two main buildings dating from the 15th century have been restored and conserved and are now back in daily use. The grounds have been landscaped with new paths, benches, trees and planting and will include an example of a medieval courtyard garden. Special events and projects over the next few years will establish Llanthony Secunda Priory as a heritage attraction and cultural venue. The Priory, one of several religious foundations in Gloucester, existed for 400 years. It owned properties and land both in Gloucester and the surrounding counties – as far afield as Ireland – churches, farms, fish weirs, quarries and manor houses.
