Altrincham College

altrincham college

Cheshire

As Headteacher of Altrincham College I count myself very fortunate to be leading a happy school where all members of our community are valued for the contributions they make, enabling them to flourish in complex and demanding times. Together we provide an environment where learning is actively sought and highly prized by students and staff, energising them to improve further and releasing the positive energy that naturally exists within all people. I believe that outstanding teaching leads to outstanding learning which has a direct impact on behaviour, attendance and staff and student well-being. As we move forward, we will maintain a sharp focus on the quality of teaching in the classroom, in assemblies and in extra-curricular activities in order to ensure all-round rapid academic progress for years to come through creativity and innovation. We know that when children and young people feel safe, cared for and have a positive outlook on life, they are able to learn. Not only do they learn but they learn well and work diligently. I believe this environment has been established at our school however we cannot rest on our laurels; the best must be maintained and the rest built upon further as students’ differing needs must be catered for to the best of our ability. As Headteacher I will work hard to ensure that Altrincham College provides and accesses as much support as possible for our students and their families so that we continue to remove barriers to learning. Students who attend our school are immersed in an exciting, well-rounded education; they are able to access a curriculum where they have fun and which sets them up for achieving excellent outcomes for themselves, establishing them as lifelong learners and future leaders in whatever field they choose to go into; they are free to question, nurturing their curious minds and they take educational risks in order to make sense of the world. Altrincham College provides children and young people with a disciplined, supportive environment within which they can be themselves and achieve anything they put their minds to.

SWAMP enhances cultural awareness, promotes social inclusion and builds community spirit within the locality, and has been successfully sustaining this for over two decades. During this time we have taken a dilapidated building within our community and redeveloped it, and are now planning another move to new premises. We strongly believe in the model of inclusion through creation, and work collaboratively with children, young people, older people and communities to achieve our aims; predominantly, but not exclusively, with vulnerable groups. We consider the arts, community involvement and accrediting training to be positive tools for change, helping people to: Build confidence and attain new skills Get back into work or education Source work in the creative arts Enjoy better health or simply improve quality of life SWAMP was one of the first organisations in Glasgow to use creative media, digital arts and new technologies as tools for community engagement, cross-referencing them to skills and learning, and later adopting the Curriculum for Excellence approach into our programmes. Through our accredited training programmes we provide young people with the skills and attributes they need to successfully make the life transition from school to employment or further education, supporting them to better understand their local environment, and encouraging them to engage in the process of lifelong learning and active citizenship. Our bespoke programmes and projects are designed and planned with the learner very much at the heart of the process and our objectives continue to focus on developing the skills of young people to become successful learners in life and work. SWAMP places innovation, enterprise and creativity alongside outstanding delivery, sound management and a strong ethos of partnership to tackle society’s big issues. MistryMaths is a unique and unparalleled website that offers enterprising, innovative, engaging and high impact mathematics lessons and materials for a variety of people from students, teachers, lecturers, parents, schools, universities, education consultants and professionals. The author is Manoj Mistry and his work has proved immensely popular so very quickly. His work has gained over one million downloads and he was nominated for a 2013 Times Educational Supplement Award for his resource contribution to the education sector. Manoj is on a mission to change the face of mathematics education in the UK and abroad. He has started an eventful journey in banishing the stereotype of mathematics education being dull, inaccessible and worksheet based. Manoj wants to help tackle the skills shortage of mathematicians in the UK and challenge the notion that it is ok to be innumerate. No one ever confesses to being illiterate. There is a clear structure to every lesson with a minimum of three parts (majority of lessons are split into more). Lessons have been planned with OFSTED grading criteria in mind. The use of a yellow background is to help with retention. Not only is content being taught but links are readily made with skills that students can transfer into the outside world. Manoj would like to acknowledge the creativity of Laura Rees-Hughes and Tristan Jones for the work they have uploaded on www.tes.co.uk. Their creative ideas have inspired a number of different activities within his lessons. Manoj is passionate about improving the life chances of young people and bringing the UK back on the map as a pioneer in mathematics education. He has received countless praise and plenty of lovely messages from a variety of people he has never met from around the world, mentioning how much he has changed their lives and the learning experiences of students for the better. An educational institution messaged him saying they often hold exclusive meetings on how they can incorporate his resources into their scheme of work. Through desire, graft and word of mouth he has built up a brand in education, called MistryMaths, which is rapidly becoming well-renowned around the UK.

Retune Charity

retune charity

Bishop's Stortford

Retune was founded by Tom Ryder. Tom is a musician and journalist, and has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He was hospitalised for poor mental health multiple times during his late teens and early twenties, which eventually forced him to withdraw from university and begin again from scratch. While in hospital, Tom noticed that patients were finding creative outlets to cope with their predicament. These outlets included drawing, painting, writing poetry, dancing, singing and cooking. Tom wrote songs and, despite those dark times, he realised creativity’s tremendous potential to improve mental health; it is crucial to have an outlet for feelings and emotions. A few years later, Tom started hosting live gigs. He also ran workshops in schools, connecting with young people who were experiencing mental struggles. In 2018, Retune started to take shape: in addition to live shows and schools, Tom now visited prisons and hospitals, and produced online content. Tom’s cousin Kathryn Bailey – a photographer, videographer and all-round creative – joined the project in 2019. As well as sharing Tom’s view that creative outlets are powerful tools for mental wellbeing, Kathryn had a personal attachment to Retune's mission... When Tom was first admitted to hospital, 11-year-old Kathryn was shielded from the truth, as she was considered ‘too young’ to know what was going on. Being involved with Retune allows her to be part of a cause that is close to her heart, especially as Retune’s workshops discuss mental wellbeing with all ages, from primary school pupils to adults. Open conversations around wellbeing are more commonplace nowadays, but there is still a long road ahead. Through its workshops and live shows, Retune is creating a community based around mental wellbeing, underpinned by creativity. When we retune something, such as a musical instrument or a radio, we make small adjustments in order to achieve harmony, clarity and balance. Retune believes that the same theory can be applied to mental health. Harnessing creative outlets that engage the imagination, and following the principles of the SCALES model, can help all of us to make small adjustments. As a result, our mental wellbeing will be more in tune.
