The Leeds Library is the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the UK and was founded in 1768. Annual membership from £66. Founded in 1768, The Leeds Library is a gem of a heritage library and the oldest surviving subscription library of its kind in the British Isles. We have a fascinating history. We’re Leeds’s oldest cultural institution—a thriving hub of creativity, ideas and inspiration and a book lover’s paradise! Amongst our founding members were eminent doctors, surgeons, clergymen, leading industrialists and businessmen, alongside members of The Royal Society. Revd Dr Joseph Priestley, our first secretary and most likely the primary driving force behind the Library’s creation, was perhaps the most famous of these men. A leading enlightenment thinker, radical preacher, and Fellow of The Royal Society, Priestley was celebrated for his experiments concerning electricity and oxygen—and the invention of carbonated water! In the beginning, the Library occupied a back room at Joseph Ogle’s bookshop on Kirkgate and he became the first librarian. When he died in 1774, his daughter, Mary, was appointed Librarian and remained so for another 37 years until her death in 1813. Over this period, the Library proved to be so successful that it outgrew this modest first home and moved further along Kirkgate to the Rotation Office. A few years later and a move to new premises was required once again to house the ever-growing collection of books. In 1808, the Library moved to a new purpose-built home on Commercial Street where we remain to this day. Built by Thomas Johnson, the town’s leading architect, the grade II* listed building is a rare surviving example of a Georgian public library.

JESUS – COMMUNITY - CREATIVITY THE BEAR CHURCH IS AN INDEPENDENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH BASED IN DEPTFORD, SE LONDON. WE ARE A HYBRID OF TWO CHURCHES: THE SHAFTESBURY CHRISTIAN CENTRE AND THE BEAR CHURCH WHICH MERGED IN 2007. The Shaftesbury Christian Centre began in 1844 in a loft space above a cowshed off Deptford High Street. It was started by eight Christian men and women as one of London’s first ragged schools, so called because the children were ‘dressed in rags’ with bare feet in all weathers. In 1862, the Earl of Shaftesbury wrote “there is no institution in England more worthy of support than the Deptford Ragged School”. The Deptford Ragged School was renamed ‘The Princess Louise Institute’ in 1914 while The Ragged School Union was renamed The Shaftesbury Society in 1944 and Livability in 2007. The Bear Church began as The Brown Bear in an old public house on Deptford High Street in 1990. It was started by a group of visionary leaders and young people from Ichthus Christian Fellowship as an outreach post and church for young people. Today - The Bear Church is part of The Deptford Ragged Trust. We are a diverse, creative and growing group of people committed to loving God and others. From our base at The Shaftesbury Christian Centre in Deptford we aim to offer a place of refuge, learning, family, innovation, worship, hospitality and entertainment for the people of Deptford and South East London. Our building is home to The Bear Church, Bear Cubs parent and toddler group, parenting courses, ESOL classes, BearLive music events, pantomimes, Deptford Breastfeeding Group, The Evening Service and soup kitchen, The Deptford Ragged School Archive, Psalms and Stretches and Inside Out. The Creative Writing Programme is one of the leading centres for creative writing in the UK. After moving out of the University of Sussex it has established a reputation for excellence in Brighton and the South East. Our approach to teaching creative writing At a time when the cost of higher education has made university study an expensive luxury, our programmes offer a practical course of study, taught at university level, at an affordable price. Our innovative approach to teaching focuses on individual creativity and on teaching writing skills within the context of the creative process. Through a practical course of study designed to teach you how to build and structure narrative, our team of experienced writing tutors will help you develop your creative potential. Blended creative writing courses Work patterns and learning patterns are changing. To accommodate this new reality, as well as our in-person courses we have developed a new blended learning structure for our two-year programme. Our blended courses, aimed at local writers in the South East, are a mix of online and in person teaching, with classes taught from the Phoenix Art Space, or The Kemptown Bookshop in Brighton in early autumn and summer and online during the winter. You’ll spend the first five weeks of the Autumn Term meeting up in person, then switch to online learning as Winter sets in. We’ll stick with online classes until clocks go forward in March, then meet up again in person for the end of the Spring Term and the whole of the Summer Term. This way we make the most of what online learning has to offer, get to know each other, work together as a group, avoid travel over the winter months, stay safe and reduce our carbon footprint. We think that’s a positive.

However, the team have decided that because we are at a point where people are tired of Zoom, but not ready to get together, that we will concentrate for a while on posting items of interest to keep us going. We currently publish a monthly e-newsletter called Second Sunday News. It will be on our website and a copy be sent out to our mailing list via Mailchimp on the second Sunday of each month. It will feature opinion, local and national triumphs and links to articles and videos. Obviously, it will also link to our website, especially our regularly updated resources area. We will continue to do this until we can arrange meetings and events face to face, indoors or out. So, until we meet, keep looking at our Second Sunday postings. Langport

For Every Cloud was established by Donna Vale in 2013, a creative venue based in Langport, a small town in the heart of the Somerset levels. Having graduated with a first class honors degree in art and textiles I wanted to create a space where people can learn, have fun, relax and make friends, this is really important but I also wanted an environment where visitors wouldn’t feel overwhelmed. My business mission statement ‘where friendship and creativity meet’ sums up the ethos of what we do at For Every Cloud. A shop and gallery stocking local art and craft features alongside my own. Workshops are held in the gallery space and studio, which is also used to teach screen printing. Both spaces can be hired by tutors and artists alike utilising their skills to teach popular classes such as needle felting. The workshop list is varied and attracts people from as far as London, France and Denmark who come with friends and family to stay in this beautiful part of the country, booking days to make and take… and of course have tea and cake. From experimental textiles to bookbinding, etching with Perspex to calligraphy, there is something here for everyone. I work alongside local B&B’s and cafes to provide an all round experience, offering bespoke events for hen parties, corporate functions and children’s birthdays and more recently, a summer school for adults. As well as workshops I create bespoke calligraphy and stationery for weddings, sublimation printing for personalised gifts. A signmaking service is also available for all your business and personal needs. Whether you need a new shop front or graphics for your vehicle, we are happy to help with the design and installation.
