World Cancer Research Fund

world cancer research fund

London

World Cancer Research Fund is a UK charity that examines how diet, weight and physical activity affect your risk of developing and surviving cancer. On this page > Our work > Our values > Our Expert Reports > Our policy work > Raising awareness > How we operate As part of an international network of charities, we’ve been funding life-saving research, influencing global public health policy and informing the public since 1982. While society continues to search for a cure, our prevention and survival work helps people to live longer, happier and healthier lives – free from the devastating effects of cancer. Since 1990, World Cancer Research Fund has invested more than £110m in cancer prevention and survival research. And it’s all thanks to our amazing supporters! Around 40% of cancers in the UK could be prevented – that’s nearly 155,000 cases every year. Eating a healthy diet, being more active each day and maintaining a healthy weight are, after not smoking, the most important ways you can reduce your cancer risk. Our work A cornerstone of our research is the Global Cancer Update Programme. It’s the world’s largest source of scientific research on cancer prevention and survival through diet, weight and physical activity. In autumn 2022, we published our review of evidence on how a woman’s risk of dying after a breast cancer diagnosis is affected by her weight, diet and physical activity. We translate the results of our research into accurate, accessible, easy-to-understand information. By funding research and delivering health information programmes – such as Living with cancer, for cancer survivors, and Eat Move Learn for children and families – we empower people to make healthier lifestyle choices. When World Cancer Research Fund was established, scientific research into the links between diet and cancer was in its infancy. Since then, our network has funded millions in cancer prevention research and awareness-raising programmes. Now all mainstream scientists accept that diet, weight and physical activity can affect our risk of cancer and people are more aware of how their lifestyle plays a role.

Where are you on your EDI journey? We are all unique. Fact. Diversity is what makes the world such an interesting and vibrant place. Utilising diverse skills and talents makes excellent business sense. When diversity is valued and an equitable, inclusive culture prevails, people feel safe to be themselves. Staff and students are more engaged and more productive. Over recent years, great strides have been made on a legal level towards making organisations more inclusive, however knowing how to do so takes a little extra help. In our ideal world, equality, diversity and inclusion would become so completely embedded across society that our services would no longer be required… but until that happens, here we are to help you on your EDI journey. We offer a free and friendly consultation call to discuss your training requirements. If you’re not quite sure what an EDI training course should entail, you can trust us to use our knowledge and experience to advise on the length and content of the session to ensure your training needs are met. We employ a range of teaching styles and resources to cater for different learning styles to allow delegates to discuss, debate, ask questions and explore real-life situations in context. We are Approachable We pride ourselves in being friendly and approachable. You’ll get that from our emails, phone calls and in the training session itself. We recognise that EDI can feel like an uncomfortable topic, so establishing a safe space is super important. We aim to create an environment where people feel they can share diverse viewpoints, contribute to discussions and ask questions without fear. We are Committed We are committed to promoting real and lasting change that goes beyond simply awareness-raising. Our training will provide delegates with practical strategies that can be implemented immediately after the training, as well as longer-term measures. The Equality Code, our best practice audits and the signposting to further resources give you all the tools you need to continue your EDI journey, long after we’ve left the building. We are Honest Honesty is the cornerstone of integrity for us. We will answer your questions openly and honestly and guide you to make the best decisions for your organisation based on our years of experience. Should you ask for something that we don’t think will work, we’ll say so.

We were delighted to celebrate excellent GCSE and A level results in the Summer showing the huge improvement already achieved at the Academies. Avonbourne Boys' and Girls' Academies are two co - located schools that joined United Learning in 2019 with lessons being taught in a single - sex environment in Years 7-9, with opportunities for mixed sex teaching from Year 10 onwards . Brighouse High School

brighouse high school

Brighouse

At the heart of the Brighouse community is Brighouse High School and we are delighted to start a new academic year on the front foot with you all, looking forward to another successful year working together. The summer results showed the determination and resilience of our students and staff and we were delighted to see our Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts secure the qualifications they needed to take those important next steps in life. Even more satisfying, perhaps, was seeing the development of those young people over the years into young adults ready to contribute to society. Despite the continuing difficulties of last year, our school and our community continued to thrive and we are proud of all of their achievements. A particular highlight of last year was the relaunching of our wide and varied extra –curricular activities and our trips and visits. Everyone was delighted to see the Lakes trip back in the calendar and the Year 7 students had a wonderful week up in the Lake District during that final week of June. There have also been other trips out to the coast for coursework studies in Geography and to Doe Park and Bradley Woods for outdoor pursuits as well as planning ahead for the return of the Berlin trip and the Ski trip. As we took the step back to formal examinations, we saw the incredible achievements of our students who have worked hard for many years to secure the richly deserved outcomes from the key stage 4 and key stage 5 examinations. As always, I am delighted to say that Brighouse High School students are heading into the wider world to embrace their next challenges, whether that be with us for two more years in our sixth form, in college, university or employment and the school continued to strengthen the qualification outcomes in many key areas. In our vibrant and successful sixth form college there were outstanding results in academic and vocational qualifications and our post-16 students moved on to their places in higher education, employment or training. In key stage 4 we were delighted to see that the majority of our students achieved the important GCSE benchmark qualifications in English and Maths, the vital springboard into their next stages in education and life beyond school, and succeeded across our rich creative curriculum too. As always though, I am sure that you will agree that our school is about so much more than just qualifications. From the moment our Year 7 students step foot across the threshold, they are challenged to contribute and to achieve within a warm, caring and supportive environment. The opportunities within and beyond the traditional curriculum are rich and diverse at Brighouse High School; we encourage all of our students to become part of our community and build on the sense of togetherness, which is so important to us, and importantly recognised by those who visit us. Ofsted recognised the strength of relationships in our school when we were inspected in February of this year, commenting that ‘positive relationships are a cornerstone of the school’ and recognising that ‘everyone cares at Brighouse’. It is on the firm foundations of these relationships that we build our success with our students and the community. We will continue to deliver strong classroom practice within an appropriate and personalised curriculum, a positive ethos and behaviour and, with support from home, we will continue to deliver successful outcomes for all.
