Sealy MacWheely

Kirkintilloch

Hi I'm Katie, the face behind Sealy MacWheely. I am a passionate spinner, knitter and lover of all things bright and colourful! Sealy MacWheely began with very humble beginnings and came into being initially whilst I was a student to raise money for the brilliant charity, Childreach International, with whom I trekked through the Andes of Peru in the summer of 2013. Once the trek to the summit of Machu Picchu was complete I simply couldn't let go of my wee business and after graduating and moving down to the outskirts of the wonderful city of Glasgow I refreshed and rebranded and began the daunting task of vending at local craft markets. It didn't take long for my business to outgrow itself and soon I was driving across the country to larger yarn and fibre festivals and events and with a little hesitation and a lot of excitement I eventually quit my regular job and took up Sealy MacWheely full time. This of course led me to my wee Yarn & Fibre Shop which would never have existed had it not been for the incredible support of our amazing yarn community. With the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign in the autumn of 2018 I was able to move into my beautiful wee shop in Kirkintilloch where I could focus all my creative energy into sharing my love of fluff and colour! I am also passionate about ecology and the environmental impact of my business has been factored into every decision I make. Both the shop and my home where I do my dyeing are powered by 100% renewable energy and I use absolutely no single use plastics in my branded products. I am proud to announce that Sealy MacWheely has recently teamed up with Ecologi, meaning that for every purchase made both in the shop and online a tree will be planted in an effort to combat the climate emergency that our planet currently faces. Although the Covid 19 pandemic has been a bumpy ride the shop has recently moved to a new premises with an in-situ dye studio and I have absolutely no intention of giving up! In fact I have so many exciting adventures lined up for the next year that I can't wait to share with you so keep your eyes peeled!

Dream Academy is a Performing Arts School offer classes from 18 months right through to adults. We provide workshop style classes consisting of Singing, Dance and Drama to give a full creative experience for all performing arts students. All students perform a live summer show each year to give our students the platform to present their new found confidence and skills. We are also involved in varying external projects in Kent including; charity events, community fares and much more. Becoming accustom to performing publicly from an early age can combat issues often experienced in later life such as difficulty speaking to strangers on the phone, performing well in job interviews and building new relationships. Dream Academy’s core focus is to improve children’s self-confidence and social skills. We feel that our Performing Arts workshops are the perfect way for your child to develop these personal skills and attributes. As well as being a fulfilling creative outlet for children, we have also found that Performing Arts helps children build friendships more easily, feel more confident with public speaking and also improves children’s reading and writing skills. Performing arts help children learn important life skills. They boost social skills, encouraging children to work with and learn from others. They increase language skills because children are interested in learning more about the arts and how to improve their abilities in the arts. They help children be more tolerant of differences because the arts can immerse them in unfamiliar cultures that span other times and other countries. Most importantly, making and appreciating performing arts spurs curiosity, which helps develop lifelong learners. Horizons for learning as part of the John Hopkins School of Education released a publication showing the following: The Arts are an essential part of public education. From dance and music to theater and the visual arts, the arts give children a unique means of expression, capturing their passions and emotions, and allowing them to explore new ideas, subject matter, and cultures. They bring us joy in every aspect of our lives. Arts education not only enhances students’ understanding of the world around them, but it also broadens their perspective on traditional academics. The arts give us the creativity to express ourselves, while challenging our intellect. The arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person. The Arts communicate and speak to us in ways that teach literacy and enhance our lives. We must continue to find a place for arts programs and partnerships not only for what it teaches students about art, but for what it teaches us all about the world we live in. Whether you are looking for an after school club in Kent for your child, childrens dance classes in Kent, childrens singing classes in Kent or childrens drama classes in Kent, then Dream Academy Performing Arts is the place to be! Contact us to find out more and to discuss our Performing Arts School locations around Kent including; Canterbury, Chatham, Maidstone, Gillingham, Dartford, Sittingbourne and Faversham.

My passion for travel started when I was 17, leaving home and going to the Irish traditional city of Galway on the beautiful west coast of Ireland to live and work. This journey has continued and never wavers to the current day. I’m always looking for the next adventure and to “step outside my comfort zone” I have taught English and lived in San Francisco, Sydney, Melbourne, Hungary, Spain and traveled extensively all over Asia and the Pacific. pexels-photo-1560932 Educational Tourism I currently work in Educational tourism and I’m the European Project Manager for Foyle International Ltd. I oversee Erasmus work-based internships from all over Europe. I also write large funding applications to give local people the opportunity to experience different cultures, learn new working ethics and enhance their employability skills. Through this experience, I’ve noticed that personal growth is as important as professional development and that travel and tourism can increase drive, motivation and learning. pexels-photo-1015568 Educational Background My educational background includes a bachelor's degree in Business Management with Spanish. I sit on the UK board for ECVET (European Accreditation for Vocational Education and Training) and travel to different European destinations to discuss and devise methodologies to further enhance and improve Erasmus procedures and programmes. Ethos I believe that travel and experiential learning are paramount to one’s development. This includes tourism that focuses on history, culture, heritage, outdoor and therapeutic activities. Wild Atlantic learning recognises the value of travel but recognises our responsibility to implement provisions that are sustainable, Eco and combat our carbon footprint. “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it”
