Newspapers publish heartbreaking pictures, we read statistics which boggle the mind in their numbers, learn stories which appall in their tales of suffering. At the same time running through the difficult realities are threads of potential, of optimism, resilience and of capacity for hope. It is here that Ashoka strives to work. For more than thirty years, Ashoka has identified and supported the world’s best social entrepreneurs – leaders with innovative new ideas which can transform broken systems for the better, in fields from health to human rights, education to civic engagement, economic development to environment. In this time we’ve elected nearly 4000 Ashoka Fellows in 90 countries across the world. In a collaboration between Ashoka Germany and Zalando, Hello Europe was created in 2016 to identify the most powerful and proven solutions to challenges surrounding migration, integration and refugee movements with the aim of bringing them to scale in regions most in need. It was at this time that I also trained to be a cancer coach with Cancer Support UK. As an ILM5 coach and facilitator my approach is empathetic, encouraging, inspiring and strengths and solution focused, drawing on a variety of coaching models and leadership practices including Appreciative Inquiry and Brene Brown’s Dare to Lead. I am an accredited Conversations Worth Having practitioner, an ILM wellbeing coach, a cognitive behavioural therapy practitioner, a mental health first aider and Mental Health Swims host. Inspired by my love of the outdoors, and a Nature as Co-Facilitator programme, I like to weave the natural world into our conversations where possible. Tim is an active member of the Lion’s Club and a member of the board of directors for Voices for Alabama’s Children and Linking All So Others Succeed (LASOS) in Maryland. He’s completed executive-level training in leadership, non-profit management, and advanced philanthropy from Harvard Business School, Stanford University, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The VUCA environment demands that dispersed organizations are agile – able to focus, organize and engage people efficiently and effectively as the operating context changes. Covid-19, resilience and business continuity demands the same. Beyond the C-19 pandemic; employees will expect more choice in how they work; regular remote working will become the norm, and Artificial Intelligence will soon make many current jobs redundant. This increases people's feelings of 'psychological safety' which is an essential pre-condition for learning and changes to ways of working. Distributed leaders in a team of teams make strategy meaningful to align thinking and priorities; shared leadership, facilitated de-centralised decision making and collaborative planning harnesses peoples’ expertise and commitment, and releases energy and creative thinking and ideas. Doing this remotely requires 'meeting leaders' to develop their basic coaching and facilitation skills while keeping calls focused and minimising 'repetition and deviation''. After graduating with a BA(Hons) Fine Art at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London in 1988, I returned home to Northumberland to work as a photographic artist and silversmith. In 1994 I trained to teach whilst continuing on my own creative journey. I started experimenting with the many processes in the making of felt in 2005. I fell in love with its versatility, being able to paint with a varied palette of dyed wools, create something delicate and ephemeral using fine wools and silks, or use more sculptural techniques to form vessels. In 2008 I was introduced to the many varieties of coloured willows grown locally for basketry and the traditional techniques used to work with them. It excited me and I started using these to create vessels and sculptural forms. In 2011 I set up Biteabout Arts with the intention of creating unique items for sale and delivering a variety of art and craft workshops. We have been renovating the buildings at our smallholding to provide a working environment and somewhere to deliver workshops. Biteabout Farm is a North Northumbrian smallholding consisting of over 7 acres of permanent pasture. It was formally known as Coalshank (sited near to Biteabout Colliery) and also The Red Lion Inn ...'a troublesome little pub' until the 1940s. Badly neglected in more recent years, we took it on in 2002 and started its transformation. With far more work needed than initially anticipated, renovation is still ongoing, but nearing completion. I am now working in my studio and have a program of workshops on offer here. Sculptures are made to commission. Drawing on their creative expertise of materials, processes, 3D form and design, a working partnership between Anna Turnbull and Richard Charters. Working together, they explore the creative possibilities of your idea. The creative process takes time. It starts with collaboration through drawing, discussion and exploration of materials. An animated armature is created in mild steel by Richard, the bones. Anna weaves the flesh, emphasising its muscles and flow, its movement. It is the dialogue between them that brings the creations to life. Each sculpture is unique due to its individually made metal armature and the natural material of willow. Past pieces can be recreated, but each will have its own stance, character, life.
