We cater for both recreational and competitive paddlers who wish to take part in all forms of canoeing and kayaking in and around Cambridge. The club is based at our clubhouse on Sheeps Green next to the Newnham Recreation Ground in Cambridge. Activities take place all year round and include local and national paddling trips on both flat water and white water. We also have regular pool sessions at the Abbey Swimming Pool where beginners and experienced paddlers alike can practice technique and receive instruction in warm water conditions all year round. In addition we have land-based social events throughout the year. We welcome newcomers to the sport and have qualified instructors who can provide coaching to paddlers of all ages and ability levels. We have a racing squad who compete at local and national level Marathon and Sprint competitions and welcome new experienced paddlers or beginners who wish to get involved in canoe or kayak racing. The club holds regular club sessions at the clubhouse where a member is on duty to give information to visitors. The club has no postal address so all correspondence must be with one of its officers. Being Swedish in origin I feel very strongly that our wellbeing and happiness should be more prominent in our way of life and the concept of Lagom, which means ‘just about right, not too much or too little’ is a key concept to Swedish people. This balance between work and pleasure is perhaps more clearly articulated in Scandinavia and sits well together with the key foundation of the Positive Psychology movement. After my initial Psychology degree I worked in the Further Education Sector and I still have a particular interest in adolescents and in Post 16 work. I did my Educational Psychology training at the Tavistock Clinic in London in the mid 90s, and I had a good grounding in Attachment and Resilience based frameworks as well as Family Therapy. Over the years, I have also specialised in specific learning difficulties as well as more recently in Positive Psychology with a particular interest in Coaching Psychology. Over the last year I have received Positive Psychology Coaching from one of Britain’s most well established Positive Psychologists, Miriam Akhtar. Being on the receiving end of good coaching has given me a personal insight into its transformational powers. Having been an educational psychologist for over 20 years in a number of different settings, including both Local Authorities and the Independent Sector, as well as assessments for students in Higher Education, I came across Positive Psychology when experiencing personal and health changes in my own life. I applied a number of Positive Psychology strategies such as The Keys To Happier Living, (See Action for Happiness below) and I learnt to keep my attention and focus in the right place in order to promote wellbeing. I learnt what my Character Strengths were which enabled me to see myself in a different light. I feel strongly that everybody would benefit from knowledge of these principles. I am therefore keen to provide Positive Psychology training and insights to individuals, families and schools. COVID-19 - Delivery Model With social distancing measures likely to be in place for the foreseeable future, we shall be offering our services through applications such as Zoom and MS Teams, e-portfolios, auto marked online courses via the website. All this will be part of the training. We are also able to offer one-one and group coaching through this medium. We are looking at one-day workshops divided into three two-hour sessions maximum of 6 per session delivered over consecutive days or alternate days in any one week. This is open to discussion with individual customer needs. One benefit of the new format is to encourage people to have the opportunity of learning new skills with digital learning techniques. This will reflect in the Schemes of work and will be identified in the Initial Assessment. We are actively reviewing government legislation on social distancing measures and will be implanting updates (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 & Tier 4) into our delivery model (e.g. 2-meter distance, hand sanitizer, face mask, and one way systems throughout the premises) Continue
