Irrational Coaching is me, Ben Dowman, and is where I offer 1-1 Coaching and Coach training. My broader working life also involves doing Organisational Development, Leadership Training and Facilitation which are related but separate from Irrational Coaching. I do these things in partnership with several other leading consultancies (see below). My business is registered as Real People Consulting Ltd and I am the sole Director. This means I do all the coaching myself and can form in-depth partnerships with clients to provide a bespoke and personalised service. I also answer the phone, do my own invoicing and make the coffee in the morning. When I’m not doing the above I love to rock climb and cycle and would describe myself as an athlete (albeit an amateur one). I live in the Lake District where I train regularly and am an active member of a cycling club. I also travel frequently in pursuit of vertical rock and sun-soaked tarmac.

A place to have fun and pursue your personal goals, The Climbing Hub hosts a vast bouldering wall area, including a free-standing boulder, plus 16 lines of roped climbing and a state-of-the-art training area. We’ve got plenty of chill-out space, a café and a specialist retail shop stocking lines and brands we’re passionate about as climbers. We’re excited to welcome everyone to become a part of The Climbing Hub experience.

We aim to create a positive impact on the communities in which we work, and we are committed to supporting charities at both local and national level.Located right in the heart of Lowestoft, Waterlane Leisure Centre is perfectly placed to help the whole community get active. The centre boasts a huge array of first-class facilities to suit everyone, regardless of your exercise preferences. These include an enormous, well-equipped gym, a group exercise studio that offers a wide range of classes, as well as both a 25m main pool and a smaller teaching pool. There’s also a climbing wall, sports hall, dedicated group cycling studio, squash courts, soft play area, café and thermal suite, which includes a hot tub, steam room, sauna, ice fountain, relax beds and heated beds.

I'm a wooden boatbuilder, who specialises in building lightweight, skin-on-frame boats and runs kayak & canoe-building courses. Designing and making simple, beautiful and usable boats gives me huge satisfaction. At school and university I always had access to workshops. I grew up kayaking in Devon, then much further afield (Nepal, British Columbia, The Alps...). They were the things I enjoyed the most. But after graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art, I didn’t set foot in a workshop for over a decade. I worked in a digital world, designing good experiences for people on the web. I set up my own company and taught design at university. At weekends and in the evenings, I did up a couple of VW vans, and worked on our family home. When a friend died from cancer I knew life was too short, and I had to get back in the workshop and on the water. Looking to weave together a life-long love of kayaking, design and craftsmanship, I moved to Lyme Regis and enrolled to train at The Boat Building Academy. When I returned to Bristol in 2015, the Underfall Yard had just re-opened some of their historic workshops with Lottery Funding and I took on a unit. It’s now a place to make boats that I can be proud of, that people use and that will last. It’s a satisfying reward when I help people build a boat and they say “I made that!” Whether you build a boat, or I build it for you, it would be my pleasure to help you climb aboard your very own Shipshape boat.
