Space Syntax

London

Space Syntax provides creative expertise in architecture & urban planning. Operating worldwide, we combine global design experience with advanced digital technologies. Our unique modelling tools forecast the social, economic & environmental impacts of development on mobility, land value & health at all scales. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMPANY HISTORY Space syntax theory and technology were pioneered in the 1970s and 1980s by Professors Bill Hillier, Julienne Hanson, Alan Penn and colleagues at The Bartlett, University College London. The space syntax approach was conceived to help simulate the likely effects of designs on the people who occupied and moved around in them, be they buildings or urban settlements. It has since grown around the world in a variety of research areas and practical applications.  Space Syntax Limited was established on 17th July 1989 as an architectural consulting company with a mission to apply the space syntax approach in urban planning and design practice. In recent years, the company has established significant capacity in other related business ‘streams’, namely: Studio - acting as design lead on design projects, Research - carrying out funded and unfunded research projects, Training - providing training via online courses, Digital - building software-based planning and design tools and data products.  Space Syntax is a dynamic, growing and purpose-driven organisation, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. More than ever, the company is committed to making a positive impact in the context of key global challenges relating to public health, climate, ecology and social inequality.

Workie Ticket Theatre Company

workie ticket theatre company

Forest Hall

The term Workie Ticket is a Geordie colloquialism, which means someone who likes to push one’s luck- a chancer or a cheeky trouble-maker. When JoJo Kirtley was a young lass, her Grandad Joe would call her, “a proper little workie ticket” and the nick-name stuck. So, when thinking of a name for her theatre company, it seemed the perfect choice and in 2017, Workie Ticket Theatre was founded. Our mission is to shake things up, be bold, push our luck within the theatre world and empower people through our work. JoJo Kirtley Founder & Co-Artistic Director “It’s hard being a woman in terms of what is happening in the current climate, but also I think there is a gap in the market for what we do and how we do it- working with women and encouraging them through theatre to tell their stories. Now is the time to speak up and speak out.” A writer, producer, facilitator and founder of Workie Ticket Theatre Company, JoJo Kirtley has been working for over a decade to create real social impact through theatre. Her work has been performed at The Lowry, Contact Theatre, The Exchange, (North Shields), Live Theatre and the 24:7 Theatre Festival. She is passionate about developing work within local communities to create a platform and raise awareness of issues that affect women in the North East region. JoJo is also a qualified teacher with a MA in Theatre Studies. She balances running Workie Ticket with being a mother and working for various women's organisations in the North East.

Sound Matters

sound matters

London

About Sound Matters was founded in 2014, following a series of conversations between Mike Edwards (climate change and sustainability expert) and Harry Coade (music producer and soundscape recordist). These conversations, which took place in London pubs, cafes and galleries, were focused on how sound and listening could be used to create more sustainable and resilient futures. Mike and Harry discovered a unique and deep synergy between their disparate areas of expertise and began to further explore how they could apply this knowledge and insight. After delivering a series of lectures at leading universities in London, Mike and Harry began working on a number of global research initiatives, and academic courses, which were designed to discover more about how sound and listening could be used to understand the political, social, economic and environmental systems shaping the world. They also began working with a number of corporate clients who were looking for new ways of engaging their staff and stakeholders with the importance of creating business practices which were sustainable for both people and planet. From humble beginnings, Sound Matters has grown into an organisation which is widely acknowledged as a global leader in the use of sound and the art of listening to help individuals and organisations understand, and help solve, the most fundamental challenges facing the world. Sound Matters has a clear mission which is to create a universal culture of listening whereby every individual and organisation can access the power of sound and listening to create a better world.
