Montessori method allows children to learn the way they learn best, by doing things for themselves. During independent activities children are encouraged to choose work that appeals to their interests. The teacher will also introduce new work to the children according to their abilities and stage of development. I founded Helen’s Driving School in 2009. Initially teaching on my own, I was joined by Jacqui in January 2020, due to the growing number of pupils on my books. Together we worked under the umbrella of Helen’s Driving School and strive to get all our pupils to pass first time. Since surviving all the challenges the pandemic brought, Jacqui and I decided 2022 was a good time to change the set up of the driving school into a partnership and create Top Hat Driving School. I am passionate and enthusiastic about safe and eco friendly driving, and enjoy sharing these skills with my pupils and I thoroughly enjoy meeting such a variety of people. Having lived in Bristol all my life, I have great local knowledge of both Bristol and surrounding areas, including the test areas. Lessons with me are always relaxed and friendly with a laugh or two along the way. I pride myself on my approach to teaching and I feel that with my style pupils learn quickly and successfully because they feel at ease. I have taught many nervous pupils over the years and have found the best way to overcome the fear and nerves experienced whilst learning to drive is simply to maintain a calm and relaxed atmosphere in the car at all times. It is normal to feel anxious and as I have much experience in dealing with pupils anxiety, and have many tools and techniques to help manage these feelings whilst driving. Over our lessons, I will help you build your confidence and develop your driving skills to enable you to become a safe and confident driver for life. Jacqui Barr I worked in the film and tv industry for many years, but in a complete right turn (pun intended!) decided to retrain as a driving instructor. I qualified in 2018, and absolutely love the job. Every day is different, and I look forward to spending time with my pupils who teach me just as much as I teach them. I met Helen in the Avonmouth Test Centre at the end of 2019 and thought she was brilliant. She asked whether I would be interested in driving for Helen’s Driving School and of course I lept at the chance. The pandemic hit almost immediately, and lessons ground to a halt. Weathering the storm has not been easy, but (in the main) we have come out the other side: Helen and I decided we wanted to reflect the changes we’ve been through, and so created Top Hat Driving School. In addition to becoming an instructor, in 2019 I took a further exam with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to become an Advanced Driver, putting a spotlight on driver safety and skills. I bring these advanced driving techniques to my teaching, as well as being assessed as a DVSA grade A instructor (Standards Check 2021). I am conscious of Climate Change and the impact driving has on the environment. Therefore I am commited to giving all my learners methods for driving in a more eco-friendly way, reducing our impact on the environment, and saving money too. I carbon offset all my annual mileage with Carbon Footprint, choose petrol over diesel, and in the not too distant future intend to go fully electric.

I’m Xuan (pronounced Sawn). I was born in Vietnam from Chinese Vietnamese parents and I am proud to be one of the original Vietnamese boat people now living here in the UK. In the late 1970s, the aftermath of the Vietnam war and the growing oppression of the ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam forced my family to flee their home. We left Vietnam on a small overcrowded and ramshackle boat that wasn’t fit for the open water and sailed the perilous South China Sea to Hong Kong. At age 2 my first and only memory of Hong Kong is a hazy image of the orange skies. After 6 months we left the tropical heat of Hong Kong and immigrated to the cold, or you could say dreich (Scots for dreary) climate of the Scottish winter. We lived in the quiet outskirts of Glasgow for four years before moving and settling in London, which was a hubbub of culture and activity. By the age of 14 I had lived in four vastly different countries and each of these places have influenced the person that I am and the food I love to cook and eat. My own cooking adventure started at an early age – washing the rice grains for steamed rice and undertaking the long and meticulous task of cleaning and snapping the tails off bean sprouts for my parents spring rolls. This you can say was my training for the future food lover in me – or feeder. As a child of refugees, love was often shown through food rather than words. From these duties and by always keeping my belly full, my parents quietly passed on their own rich food heritage and family history to me through the years. In my 20’s I became a sushi chef at a vibrant restaurant in Central London, and spent 4 years learning the meticulous art of preparing, filleting and slicing fish for sushi, maki, nigiris and sashimi. I have since run a number of supper clubs in London and Dundee, including a charity Chinese hotpot that raised over £2,000 for the charity – Sarcoma UK. This year, I’ve taken the next leap in my food adventure and launched my online cookalong classes, which have been great fun and allow me to reach new like minded food enthusiasts far and wide. Casual Rice is all about sharing my love for food and my own culinary heritage through authentic but informal Vietnamese and Chinese meals I devoured when growing up, with Japanese influences from my sushi training days. The name Casual Rice comes from The Mandarin Way, a book by the inspirational Cecilia Sun Yun Chiang. A pioneering woman who in the 1960’s opened one of the first authentic Chinese restaurant in North America. In her book she writes “when we sat down to meals as a family, we adopted a much simpler mode of eating … such meals were known as “pien- fan”, “casual rice” or what might be termed home cooking”. As the saying goes, food is a universal language that brings people together. The International Federation of Surgical Colleges (IFSC) was founded in 1958 in Stockholm, Sweden, with the objective of speaking with a single voice for world surgery on problems of common interest. Founding members consisted of traditional colleges of surgery and surgical societies from the European continent. Official relations with the WHO started in 1960 and since then the IFSC has been a recognised non-state actor (NSA) in formal relations with the WHO. It is also in consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) where it is in a position to advise the UN on surgical matters. The IFSC remains the only organisation representing surgeons that is in special relations with both the UN and the WHO. Over the years the IFSC regularly changed its goals and operational methods as surgical care delivery, education and training changed in world surgery. In 1992 the constitution was changed to focus primarily in supporting surgical expertise in low income countries and in 2003 the constitution was again revised to state the federation’s goal as “the advancement of surgery in developing [sic] countries, especially Africa, promoting education and training, and help with examinations”. In 2007 a Memorandum of Agreement was signed with the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) to support specific educational projects. Similar support has been extended in different formats to the West Africa College of Surgeons (WACS), basic surgical training in Sri Lanka and the Egyptian Surgical Society. About what we Did From 2010 to 2015, under the leadership of Mr Bob Lane, the IFSC has supported the design, ratification and delivery of courses in basic surgical skills, anastomosis workshops, management of surgical emergencies, surgical critical care and in research methodology to a few hundred surgical trainees, other junior doctors, nurses who work in surgery and associate clinicians, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa, but also in Sri Lanka. Such courses were always developed and delivered on request from affiliated regional or local surgical organisations, and in consultation with ministries of health about local need. In order to easier manage the business of course delivery the IFSC was registered as a charity in England and Wales in 2011. Included in all training courses was Training of Trainers which was essential in order to create sustainability in surgical learning. Large numbers of senior surgeons joined in the teaching of trainees on our courses and were able to continue running courses independently thereafter, which is still happening in certain centres to this day. To support this process teaching material was handed over to local centres or made available electronically. In 2019 and 2021 online courses in research methodology were developed for surgical and anaesthesia trainees in COSECSA and the College of Anaesthetists of East, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA) respectively, with guidance and support from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI), a founding member of IFSC. About us, the WHO and Surgical Learning Over the years IFSC worked hard with likeminded groups to support WHO projects in emergency and essential surgery, such as contributing to the book Surgical Care at the District Hospital, the Alliance on Patient Safety, the Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) and resolution 68.15 at WHA68 in 2015 on “Strengthening Emergency and Essential Surgical Care and Anaesthesia as a Component of Universal Health Coverage”. In 2020-2021 the IFSC contributed to the development of the Learning Strategy of the new WHO Academy with specific focus on improved global preparedness for health emergencies. Members of the IFSC’s executive board continue to play important roles in the Technical Experts Working Group for advising SADC countries on the implementation of National Surgery, Obstetrics and Anaesthesia Plans as part of Universal Health Coverage. In this process the IFSC actively contributes to implementing the WHO’s “3 Billion” Pillars of work for universal health coverage, better protection from health emergencies and people enjoying better health and wellbeing. The IFSC’s focus in delivering these goals remain in advocacy for global surgery, in supporting education and training in especially essential surgery in first level hospitals and in supporting research skills acquisition by all surgeons in especially low and middle income countries (LMICs). In this way IFSC is trying to contribute to the decolonisation of surgical education and research, and to stop the unethical flow of research data from the Global South to rich countries in the North. It has also become clear that the time for designing surgical training courses in rich Western countries (or any HICs) for delivery in LMICs has come to an end. There remains a vast learning need in surgery in the Global South but such learning is directed from surgical educational institutions and experts in LMICs. The IFSC’s role in supporting such learning needs is increasingly to provide and support individual experts from its member organisations who can help deliver or advise on such learning projects. The SARS-CoV 2 pandemic has made it possible to deliver much of such support virtually, saving the expenses and climate impact of frequent air travel. About our Vision As incoming president of IFSC I have therefore stated three goals: To make IFSC more open and democratic, and more representative of surgeons in LMICs. It means reviewing the constitution, re-introducing a president’s council, changing membership criteria, and nomination and voting processes. To give this momentum, at the AGM a new Secretary-General and a new Chair of the Education and Research Committee were elected from Southern Africa institutions. The majority of surgeons in the world are not trained through traditional surgical colleges and IFSC membership should reflect this. Proposals for changes to IFSC structure and processes will be discussed by the Executive Board (EB) in 2022 and presented at the 2022 AGM for a vote. To play our role in decolonising surgical education, training, research and care. It means discouraging the flow of teaching and training material developed in HICs to be taught in LMICs, and stopping the flow of research data and intellectual property from the Global South to rich institutions in the Global North. IFSC will, however, strongly support surgical learning programmes developed in LMICs, as requested, and continue to support our research methodology courses for trainees in COSECSA, CANECSA and elsewhere to help young surgeons and anaesthetists in LMICs have control of their own research data. To support planetary health. Human, animal, plant and climate health are all interlinked. As IFSC helps with training, ongoing learning and support for essential surgery, it is important that such progress does not come at an unnecessary cost to planetary health. This also means being aware of and speaking out about unnecessary planetary health costs of luxury surgical care in high income environments. For this goal IFSC depends on advice from experts outside our organisation. All the above mean that IFSC needs to work differently to support the role of surgeons and surgery in the world, and encourage members not to think in surgical silos, but consider how we can work with other organisations in global surgery and related groups in e.g. anaesthesia, gynaecology and with other expertise, in order to advance surgical care for patients who are most in need. Although membership of IFSC is through surgical colleges and societies, we hope that those colleagues who read this piece will be encouraged to support the work of IFSC through their respective surgical organisations.

I HAVE A PASSION AND A BELIEF I have worked with young people for 17 years, I started working with young people in 2004 within a youth club, that provided a safe space for young people to engage in many activities. Very quickly I found my passion which is helping young people to make positive choices in their lives. Whilst my time was spent with a diverse group of young people, I realised that I had a passion working with the more challenging young people, usually the ones that get forgotten because they’re not turning up for school or their behaviours are very challenging because maybe they have emotional behavioural difficulties including risky behaviours. With these challenges I conducted risk assessments, whilst keeping young people at the heart of any action undertaken. These young people are the ones central to what I believe is my mission. I wanted to work primarily with young people who for some reason or another had conflict within their life. My belief is, no matter what, everybody needs somebody to believe in them, even when they struggle to believe in themselves. This led to more responsibility in my role as a youth worker. I started doing one-to-one work with challenging young people, working on a project that targets young people who are at risk of becoming marginalised. When further cuts to Youth service's were sanctioned young people suffered the most, this had a knock on effect to local crime figures rocketing. Young people with no direction or safe spaces to grow, the fundamental nature of being young is lost and in too many cases to mention, young people often find themselves in an environment where peer pressure is rooted in dysfunction, this in my experience is the perfect storm for disaster. Over the last decade since the cuts to youth work it has become more challenging to engage young people. I found myself taking my passion to help young people who were in a residential care setting where they were having the most difficult time of their lives. But again through one to one Key work supporting young people to make changes and experience alternative support such as green activities, I found that these activities help toward emotional stability. Activities can include night fishing, paddle boarding, kite surfing or whatever the young person chooses. If an idea or activity is brought to me I will only consider this after a thorough risk assessment and if successful together we will implement the activity in our one to one sessions, this serves as a way of including young people in their own support package. My aim, together with young people would be to re-introduce them to education, society and family living through mediation and support. I will be introducing young people to resilience building techniques that will have far reaching benefits that will stay with them throughout life, better preparing them for challenges life will bring. Outdoor activities reduce isolation, encourages change and builds confidence rather than being stuck indoors on their consoles confined to their bedrooms in isolation but getting out and enjoying nature and fun activities. please follow the hyperlink below Whilst doing all this creating a safe, positive, caring environment providing a consistent, reliable relationship with good boundaries. I then changed and went back to mentoring and again I have worked with some of the hardest to reach young people. I have a belief that everyone deserves to be given a helping hand. Whether they have been exploited with crime eg. CSE or County Lines, Gang Culture, Knife Crime, this can cause young people to be trapped in a cycle of fear that they can’t get out of,I believe no young person should be exposed to negative cycles like those mentioned above. This leads to isolation within their families and communities. Evidence is emerging during the current climate i.e Covid 19 has had a detrimental effect on young people regarding their mental wellbeing. Isolation breeds dysfunction which can contribute to anxiety and dysfunctional behavior finding It difficult to reintegrate back into society. which for some could even mean not being able to leave the house. My passion is to help turn young people's lives around and build resilience. empowering them to do things they really enjoy. In doing so this will help build up life skills that will inevitably serve them well with the challenges that life will bring. I will support them to be the best young person they can become and enjoy a safe caring and sustainable life which we all deserve.
