Bronze is contemporary and yet has strong echoes deep within our evolutionary past. The casting of bronze is a raw and elemental process that can be achieved around a campfire with beeswax and clay or in sophisticated foundries using high tech furnaces and technical materials. At the heart of the process is the transformative slight of hand, like fossilisation where one object becomes another under the influence of extreme heat. Organic materials or wax are replaced by bronze in the casting process, via a combination of intention, earth and fire. Finishing and colouring bronze is equally transformative, raw metal through the crude exposure to the weather, seawater or sophisticated of chemical sequences and heat comes to life with rich, lustrous and intense colours. NEW WORKS I love the physicality of sculpture both of the process and the materials. Before setting up my bronze foundry in 2015 I trained and practiced as a ceramic artist. Working wax, is a visceral process; how I feel in the act of creation and my responses to the emerging piece dictate the outcome. I suspend conscious engagement and hold the sense of where something is going for as long as possible without interpretation. I believe that a work of art can offer a mirror to the soul for both the maker and the observer. How we respond to a work tells us something about ourselves. For this reason I am encouraged to explore new areas of work and challenge the viewer to consider their response to all types of work, paying attention to what they like as much as well as what they find uncomfortable.

We are a community interest company called Choose Nature CIC with our site being located adjacent to the Wheal Martyn Clay Works, Carthew, mid-Cornwall.  We aim to broaden the accessibility and inclusivity of outdoor learning opportunities and therapeutic support in nature.   Mission statement: ‘Choose Nature CIC works to increase the wellbeing of individuals, communities and the environment by inspiring life long learning and care. Our calm enriching outdoor spaces are emotionally grounding and cultivate a strong relationship with nature’.  We are continuing to restore and develop the site. It has so many exciting areas including gardening spaces, wooded areas, wildlife ponds, orchard, classroom, and poly tunnels. We currently have our weekly ‘Mamas in Nature’ group (supporting new mums and babies as transition into parenthood), ‘Making Tracks’ group (supporting young people with additional needs) and different volunteering opportunities as we establish a volunteer programme. We also host a variety of family events and workshops throughout the year. More recently we have been welcoming St Austell College students onto site to gain work experience on their construction course, as well as striving to become a Makaton Friendly Organisation. Am a relative beginner but I got to use and experiment with all types of clay such as porcelain, paper porcelain etc which you don't normally get access to on other pottery courses. Caroline is incredibly encouraging and an excellent teacher. It was a perfect week for me because as well as it being a fantastic course, it was set against a backdrop of beautiful Cornwall with access to fabulous walks and there was the added bonus of staying in a beautiful house where you really couldn't have felt more welcome. I live is a lovely Leicestershire village with my three grandchildren and two cats. Life is constantly busy, but every available moment I have you will find me at my desk designing and making, or in my workshop adding the finishing touches to a piece. I love working with glass. It is a medium with endless possibilities, it is unpredictable, sometimes difficult to control but when it works it is just beautiful. I have been working with glass for over five years. If you look at my work it is clear to see that I am inspired by nature, the sea, flora, trees, landscapes, and I bring elements of all of these into my work. I am lucky that I have been able to spend time learning from some inspirational UK glass artists, Claire Hall in Somerset, Laura Hart in Suffolk and Roberta Ayles in Devon. All have passed on different and varied skills that have helped me progress as a glass artist. My signature pieces are my fairy pictures. Each one is individual, each one has a link to nature. Most of these are now commissions and I am always overjoyed when I get asked to make a fairy picture. This year I am beginning to discover other materials to work with including silver clay and enamel on copper. The future may involve me exploring ways of combining the different materials to see what can be produced and achieved. Due to a variety of reasons I have come to art later in life, but in retrospect this is the right time for me, what I do makes me happy, I know I am very lucky to be able to say that. Each workshop is different, in the past we have run workshops marbling, playing with clay, beeswax wrap making, making an art attack and a fire engine! My name is Denise Thompson/Coutu. I’ve been teaching art classes and giving parties for over 10 years. I love working with kids. I’m a mom, and have also had my own daycare. I also come from a family of teachers. I get great satisfaction from seeing my students grow, both in their skill level and their understanding of the arts. I grew up in Hudson, NH and studied mainly in Boston. My educational experience includes a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Tufts University; a Fine Arts Diploma from the Museum School in Boston (5 yrs), and Certificates in Graphic Design and Web Design from schools in Manchester, NH. I have been a graphic design professional for over 18 years. I worked in the art department in MA working with digital files and preparing them for press. I have also worked in the theatre industry in Boston, which was fun and exciting. My other professional skills include scenic painting, oil painting and drawing, sign making, jewelry making, clay work, mosaic making, sewing and cake decorating. I would love to teach anyone who is interested in learning the skills to make beautiful works of art. I’m now offering After School Care Program, Summer Classes, art classes and private birthdays or other party options. Please contact me to discuss dates you’d like to plan an event. In 2016, I began offering workshops in my studio, located just outside of Coggeshall and a few miles from Colchester. The converted barn provides a creative and supportive hub where I teach groups of up to twelve. Many of my structured textile workshops are taught across one or two days, but I do provide longer, design oriented textile courses and I mentor several groups on an ongoing basis. As my background is in creative textiles all the workshops I offer both in the studio and as a visiting tutor involve free motion embroidery with a design approach. More recently I have begun to take on other textile tutors and I now can offer a much larger range of textile courses including dressmaking, pattern cutting, felting, modern patchwork & Quilting as well as hand embroidery and decorative textiles. As well as textiles I have expanded the workshop itinerary and now offer illustration, lino printing, fused glass and silver clay jewellery on a regular basis with local, fabulous tutors. I hope that regardless of what experience level you have, you will still find something to suit you. So whether you are a beginner or more advanced in your chosen craft, take a look at the full range of workshops available. If you are unsure as to whether you will be able fully participate in a class, then simply get in touch and I would be happy to advise on what is best for you to do. While the majority of the workshops available through this site are based at my studio, I do travel and teach regularly in other local venues and I am happy to go further a field. This allows me to reach more students and collaborate with others, which is something I love to do. I offer a range of structured one and two day workshops to beginners through to more experienced in machine embroidery. Do get in touch if you are a Guild or textile group to discuss your groups requirements and I am a happy to send you a list of workshops I offer. Back to the studio – the current range of workshops will grow over time and I hope to continue offering a wider variety of subjects so if there is something you are interested in but can’t see listed, get in touch!
