Noise Academy was created in 2015 by Joe Townsley who is a midlands based DJ and Music producer. Joe studied Music production at Access Creative College in Lincoln and felt inspired by the innovation of the sessions and how engaged he became through the use of music technology. After completing the course, Joe went into organising Dance music events in the club scene whilst playing at many other live DJ events and festivals. Joe came across the opportunity to do some work experience with ‘Jeff Rich’ who was the main drummer for the famous ‘Status Quo’. He helped Jeff set up several Drumming workshops in primary schools across the UK and this opened Joe’s eyes to a whole new world. He felt so inspired by the workshops and a light bulb moment occurred. Dj skills in schools? This could work really well… Joe found out about the Prince’s Trust enterprise scheme and approached them with his idea. He was offered a place on the course, and with their support and guidance, Noise Academy was born. Building up from just one school, Noise Academy now work with over 50 schools every week along with facilitating holiday clubs across Christmas, Easter and Summer. Noise Academy have since been supported by Youth Music to help develop their own educational hub alongside receiving numerous awards including; CO-OP Community Champions and The AIM Local Hero Awards (BBC Music introducing) #makesomenoise “I am so lucky to have found my niche, and to be able to do something that I love every day. We are a relatively small club with about 40 members. A few of these have hung up their dive gear for good and just turn up socially. We consider ourselves pretty friendly, don't take ourselves very seriously and are prone to an occasional bout of "milling around aimlessly". We meet at the K2 Lesiure Centre in Crawley every Thursday. We have use of the pool from 9pm but like to meet up to an hour before for a bit of training, organising the weekends diving or just some general chit-chat. We host a pretty active diving schedule throughout the year including dives off our club boat moored in Littlehampton, trips away to Portland & Dover and training days at Vobster, Wraysbury and other dive centres. COMING SOON As a club we also like to make the effort to get away with trips to the Red Sea, liveraboard voyages in the Maldives and Skiing in France Alongside all the diving, we like to keep our social calendar full. Whether its the Christmas do, Skittles and Pizza evenings or just meeting up for a swim on a Thursday night. Refuge In Literacy UK began when children’s author Anne Stairmand donated signed copies of her books to a local domestic violence refuge at Christmas 2020. The response was so positive she wondered if this would be the case throughout the UK, and so she spent the following January and February speaking to over 300 refuges in the UK asking whether authors donating signed copies of their books to their local refuges would make an impact. From the joy of receiving a personal gift, to the simple joy of reading, to the educational, emotional and self-improvement opportunities books can present – which in turn can create empowerment and self-esteem – it was clear these books would have an impact. Children will have a sense of value, worth, self-esteem … They will harness a willingness to read, to learn, to savour the process of reading, escapism and transformative powers of a book. — Thurrock Changing Pathways Essex, 2021 Refuge In Literacy UK is also aiming to address a lack of consistency in literacy resources and training by supporting refuges with reading strategy prompts which feed into the National Curriculum. Our pilot refuges, currently nine across the UK, will help trial these, and evaluations will help us refine and improve. The wider benefits of a signed personal copy of a book cannot be underestimated, encouraging children and parents to become literacy confident in reading, writing and comprehension. — Glasgow Women’s Aid, 2021 We are a board of six directors and have seven board advisors with expertise in many different areas who attend meetings to support and advise throughout the year. The personal benefits of having a newly, personally signed book, creates a sense of empowerment. From the Edinburgh Hat Studio, award-winning Scottish milliner and hat maker Sally-Ann Provan creates bespoke handmade hats, headpieces, & bridal millinery for weddings (the bride, her family & guests), Royal Ascot, Henley Royal Regatta, investitures, Royal garden parties, special occasions, stage & screen. For every event and and everyday! Sally showed for two seasons at London Fashion Week in her own catwalk show, and her work and inspirations are featured in four books. She is also featured in the main film in the 'Fashion and Style' gallery at the National Museums of Scotland, and created a headpiece which was shown in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery as part of the stunning 'Beauty By Design' exhibition. She is a V&A Dundee Design Champion. Her hats have graced the heads several members of the Royal Family including HRH The Duchess of Cambridge; HRH Princess Beatrice; HRH Princess Eugenie; Zara Tindall; and Autumn Phillips, and other clients include First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins, and broadcasters Edith Bowman; Charlotte Hawkins and Francesca Cumani. She also creates headwear for opera, ballet, and theatre companies, television, and film. Each piece is designed and made with great attention to detail and finish. She is Scottish Opera's milliner making hats for over 30 of their productions, and other clients include The BBC, Scottish Ballet, The Royal Lyceum Theatre, and Netflix including a hat worn by leading lady Brooke Shields in 'A Castle for Christmas'. After her BA Hons degree in jewellery, Sally dallied a while in paper conservation and museum sculpture, before nurturing her passion for hats and accessories with comprehensive millinery training in London. Amongst others, she has trained under the late Queen Mother's milliner and with The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. She was one of 100 top British design business selected to exhibit at 'UK Now' in Australia, and also exhibited at the prestigious Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show.

The Mary Carroll Library Founded in 1954 by Miss Mary Carroll, the School Library serves the students and Staff. It houses well over 10,000 books and is equipped with tape recorders, cassettes, headphones and a projector. Over the years, Miss Carroll worked out a scheme of training a team of Desk Librarians and this system, under the direction and with the assistance of the present Librarian, is still in operation today. The students gain very valuable experience in dealing with queries and handling books. The Library is open to all students and Staff. Most of the stock can be borrowed for home use but dictionaries, encyclopaedia and out-of-print books may not be taken out. A book may be borrowed for a fortnight and may be renewed on request if no one else has asked for it. Books can be reserved on request as in the public libraries. There is no fee required for joining the school Library. Library News Our new computerised system has been purchased and we have already uploaded over two thousand books onto the system! We hope to have all our fiction books uploaded by the end of the school year. Once all the fiction books have been uploaded we can begin using the new system to check out books. This means that students can also search our catalogue and renew books from home. Library Opening Hours A reminder that the library is open Monday to Friday at lunchtime, 1.00–1.40. Library Notice Board Keep an eye on the library noticeboard for details of writing competitions and library events! Library Readathon Following the success of our readathon last year we ran another one before the Christmas Holidays. Once again this year, the winning student was presented with a hamper of goodies. The hamper was on display in the library and sponsorship cards were collected from the library at lunchtime. All were invited to participate!

2024 WORKSHOP PROGRAMME UPCOMING WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES Each year we run a series of workshops that are open to members of the group. Most of these require booking in advance and have extra costs associated to cover things such as tutors and materials. Participation in workshops is optional. If you’re interested in taking part in any of these please speak to Jenny R at the next meeting. Fran Carpenter is the Managing Director of Frantic Productions Ltd. Frantic was formed in 1998. A prolific writer of school music resources and Christmas nativity plays and musicals, Fran has more than 20 years' experience of teaching early years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as a music co-ordinator and specialist class music teacher. Fran's catalogue of school musicals and music education resources is growing all the time, and her nativity plays and musical productions have been performed worldwide in thousands of primary schools. Fran also worked for several years in school television and educational video production. She worked as a member of the producer's team on a series of BBC's Look and Read and on a TEFL video for Pearson Education, and was a co-writer of the accompanying teachers' resource packs. She is a member of the Orff Society UK and much of her music for children is inspired by the creative Orff approach to music education. In addition to her writing work, Fran runs music workshops in nurseries and schools and CPD teacher training courses for music hubs and teacher training colleges. These courses are highly regarded and provide teachers and students with a whole host of ideas for creative music making with early years and primary children. A history of the school… Marjorie Eileen Wise – a Christmas Day baby! As with lots of little girls, Marjorie Wise wanted to go to ballet lessons, and her parents, Harry & Grace decided at age 6, she could go to Leicester ballet teacher, Queenie Green and enjoy a few ballet lessons. Marjorie’s parents were unaware of the talent that their daughter had! Marjorie enjoyed her ballet lessons and took her Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) exams one by one until by the age of 17, she had passed her Advanced Exam and had begun to achieve the relevant teaching qualifications to be able to teach RAD ballet and enter children for exams. Just before her 18th birthday, she decided to open her own school and thus Marjorie Wise School of Dancing (MWSD) was born. Harry & Grace Wise were keen to assist their daughter with this venture and moved from the family home in Aylestone to a house on Saxby Street, Leicester, because it had a dance studio in the basement. This was converted into a ballet studio with bespoke mirrors, barres and floor. Marjorie Wise became a household name in Leicester and the school thrived. Marjorie herself continued with her own ballet study and soon expanded into International Dance Teacher’s Association (IDTA) tap and theatre craft study. Marjorie travelled weekly to be taught by Sissie Smith in Nottingham and furthered her knowledge of ballet. Soon, Saxby Street was too small for the expanding school and Marjorie started hiring local halls to teach in. Her cousin, an excellent pianist, accompanied the classes on the piano and her parents dealt with the admin of running the school. In the 1960’s, a young girl called Yvonne Saunders, joined the school for her lessons, as she wanted a classical RAD ballet school for her training. Yvonne was a very talented dancer and Marjorie quickly recognised an outstanding talent in this pupil. She was not wrong, as Yvonne went on to be the lead dancer with the Royal Ballet, partnering the likes of Rudolf Nureyev and dancing solos with the Company all over the world. Yvonne continued to keep in touch with Marjorie on a regular basis.

The IBBSS looks forward to giving our guests a warm welcome. The quality of the faculty virtually ensures a high-octane adventure for everyone involved. Located at University of Wales, Swansea, which overlooks the majestic panorama of Swansea Bay, all participants will be spoilt for choice both in the realm of music and holidaying options on offer. As in any learning situation, the bottom line rests with the quality of the faculty, and in this case, it is as good as it gets anywhere in the world. Each member of the faculty is internationally renowned, not only for their musical and performance expertise but also their social skills, a consequence of a regular diet of globe-trotting, performing and conducting master-classes to people of all ages and abilities. It was famously said of the Artistic Director, Dr. Nicholas Childs, that if he had played the cello rather than the euphonium, his name would have been Rostropovich. He is now perhaps more widely known as Artistic Director of the world-famous Black Dyke Band. Meanwhile, the instrumental tutors represent the cream of Britain’s incredibly talented core of brilliant instrumentalists: the incredible Tom Hutchinson from The Cory Band, Daniel Thomas, Richard Marshall and Brett Baker from Black Dyke, Freelance soloist Owen Farr and Gary Curtin from the Fodens Band. Under their expert tutelage you will be given the opportunity to explore new repertoire, meet new friends and generally have a fantastic time. For those applicants who possess an overwhelming desire to seriously improve their all-round playing skills and musical understanding, then, without doubt, they have chosen wisely, for the fixed intention is to provide them with a learning experience of a lifetime, whilst still allowing time and space for holiday fun. If the aim is to balance a general improvement in overall playing standards with making new like-minded friends, whilst enjoying a little more time in the sun amidst great surroundings, then look no further. In short, everyone enrolled in the summer course will be able to design a great banding holiday with precisely as much music making as is desired. The International Brass Band Summer School also caters for non-participating and non-residential visitors. For those who want to brush up on their brass band skills whilst their partners soak up the sun in a sublime environment, rest assured, this will resemble Christmas in the summer.
