Growing up I was incredibly blessed by the magic my parents created for my sisters and I at Christmas. It started a few weeks before the big day with the tree. We had a classic late 80’s white tree. Each year, we’d gather together as we unboxed the decorations, taking it in turns to place our favourite baubles on the branches. The star, the most magical ornament of all, would be placed at the top by my Dad. The Christmas classics vinyl would be playing on our record player as we drank hot chocolate and prepared for the forthcoming festive season. These remain some of my fondest and most vivid memories. My parents kept that seasonal spirit alive for us throughout the pursuant weeks, ending in a crescendo on Christmas day. Gifts and games galore, sing alongs whilst my Dad played the guitar. As the night drew to a close my Mum would snuggle us up under a blanket before we went to bed. I wouldn’t trade these precious memories for anything. I’m aware how very fortunate I am. Nowadays Christmas remains a joyful time for us and over the years, we’ve gathered new loved ones and added even more traditions to our family repertoire. Charades is a Findlay family classic. And you can bet your bottom dollar Die Hard will feature at least once. In 2019 I experienced my worst Christmas. Dealing with a difficult diagnosis and having only received my cancer treatment plan hours before, I spent the day in a haze of champagne, anti-anxiety medication and shock. The year or two leading up to that Christmas, I’d been experimenting with long periods alcohol free. Once a proud owner of my party girl status, I’d been surprised by how freeing it felt to remove the booze and lean into other facets of myself. Parts of me that I’ve now come to realise alcohol had been concealing, or more perhaps more accurately, stealing.

ICIF, a prestigious Italian cooking and enology school, has its headquarters in the Castle of Costigliole d'Asti, a town located among the most beautiful hills of Monferrato, at the gates of the Langhe, in a land with a strong agricultural vocation, famous for the production of Barbera and Moscato wines. The town is dominated by the imposing forms of the Castle, one of the grandest and best preserved in the province of Asti, of medieval origin, it was restructured over the centuries, and passed from hand to hand of various owners until it arrived in 1854, married by Francesco Verasis, Virginia Oldoini, Countess of Castiglione, whose legend is still part of the Castle walls today. In fact, it is said that, considering her resourcefulness and her charm, in 1855 her cousin Cavour sent her on a mission to the French court of Napoleon III to plead the Franco-Piedmontese alliance with the emperor. The countess' great social and seductive presence gave the expected results: she was luxuriously hosted in Compiègne, very worldly, very expensive, the countess was for a year the almost official lover of the emperor. On the west side of the Castle, owned by the municipality, there is a large portal which can be accessed via a double flight of stairs: this is the entrance to our Institute, the Professional School of Italian Cuisine where, from 1997 to today, among those same walls, young cooks from all over the world take turns learning the secrets of Italian food and wine. The classrooms and laboratories for training activities in the Castle: Tasting room and Enoteca Inside the School, in the historic cellars of the Castle, the Enoteca has been set up, where the best Italian producers exhibit their products. The ICIF National Enoteca is among the most advanced structures in Italy for deepening the knowledge of Italian wines. Inside the Enoteca there is a very modern tasting room with a futuristic design, which we have equipped with 20 multifunctional tasting stations which can be used not only for wines, but also for the sensory analysis of other products, such as oil, vinegars, coffee, etc. Elaiotheque Inside the Scuola, in the historic cellars of the Castle, the Elaiotheque has been set up, where a selection of Italian extra virgin olive oils is displayed. The ICIF National Elaioteca brings together experts and enthusiasts of the mythical product, it is the first and for now the only initiative in the olive sector that offers an objective review of certified quality Italian extra virgin olive oils whose profile and whose gastronomic applications have been ascertained by an international panel of tasters recognized by the International Olive Council. We have selected exclusively products of Italian origin guaranteed by IGP, DOP, organic farming and product quality certifications. The ICIF National Elaioteca represents an important and unique tool for the valorisation of the best Italian extra virgin olive oils and for their in-depth knowledge aimed at the best culinary applications. Restaurant It is a refined and exclusive environment, adjacent to the main kitchen, it is used for training relating to room service, for events, official lunches and for the final essays of some training courses in which the students prepare a complete menu for guests and authorities at demonstration of their learning. Chocolate laboratory A new didactic space, set up with all the equipment to learn the art of combining and treating the different varieties of cocoa and ingredients to create the delicious flavor of a quality chocolate, guided by the Master Chocolatiers to discover their secrets. Grotto of cheeses An exhibition space from other times recreated as the "crutin" of our elders, to enhance the great variety and quality of Italian cheeses and not forget the importance of the history and tradition of a millenary culture now exported and appreciated all over the world. Little Hurrahs has been teaching BSL-based Baby and Toddler sign for over 5 years, working with families, carers, Pre-school and Nursery Setting and many other groups and organisations. Little Hurrahs is the Brain Child of Jo Emmerson. Now a mum of two, I have worked in all kinds of roles, from PR Director to Housing Manager, from Weight Loss Consultant to Quality Control in a Chocolate Factory, and more recently as both student and teacher of British Sign Language. My love of BSL started five years ago when we started taking BSL-based baby signing with our 6-month-old son. I utterly fell in love with how transformative it was. The gift of being able to communicate meaningfully with this small shouty human was mindblowing. It completely changed my experience of parenting, gave me the tools and techniques to begin to bond with the little squish, and start to trust my instincts. Fast forward a few years and my son was diagnosed with bilateral middle ear effusion (or 'Glue Ear' as it's commonly known) and he has significant hearing loss in both ears. Without his bone-conduction hearing aid, his hearing is similar to putting your fingers in your ears and putting your head underwater. Thankfully, we've been signing with him for years now. This diagnosis prompted me to move my BSL forward, completing Level 2 during Lockdowns in 2021 and completing my Level 3 in 2022, with a plan to start my training to become an n interpreter and gain my Level 6 qualification from 2023. It has also changed the focus of my work, moving me away from solely working with babies and toddlers to working with nurseries, schools, and colleges as well as parents with D/deaf and Hearing Impaired children. I am also pretty active in my local D/deaf community, volunteering and socializing - I'm proud of my signing son, and I want him to grow up feeling proud to be part of the BSL community. I now work directly with parents and carers, teachers, school staff, and children, delivering a range of courses, from self-led 90-day courses for parents, carers and EYFS settings, to School-year based 'train the trainer' online courses for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. These courses are primarily delivered online and are designed to ensure that my students get real, impactful results that can be measured informally, either through improved communication and understanding in the home or through in-class monitoring to ensure children meet formal education goals and expectations. I am also working with a Primary School to develop a new course, enabling staff and pupils to meet the Progression Steps for BSL as an International Language under the new Curriculum for Wales. Jesus finished all, accomplished all, at the cross, so that now, as the writer of Hebrews declared, we can “fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favour to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].” (Hebrews 4:16Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)) Both Terry & Jill are ordained by RMI and hold RMI Ministerial Association. In 2018 both Terry & Jill received Honorary PhD Doctorates in Christian Ministry from Excel Christian University for over 20 years of Ministry, Leadership, Service & authoring many books & musical publications.
