Following a joint venture in setting up a local SEN parents' group in 2002, Claire joined IPSEA, a renowned national charity, as a volunteer telephone advisor and later a Tribunal Support Service Representative. Claire says: “One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the fundamental importance of using the law to secure, and if necessary, enforce rights to ensure that children and young people receive the special educational provision they are entitled to. I have been privileged to advise and support many families over the years and I am incredibly passionate about children and young people with SEND receiving the education they are entitled to”. This led Claire to successfully complete her LLB Law (1st class) and Higher Diploma in Paralegal Practice in 2011.

OMMRI is a marine conservation charity. We work with our local Orkney community to ensure marine mammals are valued and given the protection they deserve whilst in Orkney waters. As a locally based grassroots organisation, we undertake research and collate data relating to marine mammals within Orkney, in partnership with Orkney residents and national organisations, to encourage a culture of stewardship that utilises an evidence based approach to protect Orkney’s marine mammals. Marine mammals are present year-round in Orkney waters. Despite this and a public appetite to know more about the marine life in our seas, little is known about residency patterns and abundance levels of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and pinnipeds and the impact of localised anthropogenic (caused by human activity) pressures on these.

Chaigeley School is a Non-maintained Special School, established in 1946, that caters for young people between the ages of 8 and 16 who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Approved by the Department of Education, Chaigeley School provides a daytime schooling provision. The school is part of Chaigeley Educational Foundation, which is a registered charity. The Chaigeley ethos is based around the Quaker principle of respect for the individual and valuing the contribution made by everyone. It gives students the opportunity to make choices in a non-threatening environment using positive reinforcement and the building of solid trusting relationships to encourage positive progress. All students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions in preparation for the next stage in their development.

We organize meetings and social and community events with a view to decreasing social isolation and promoting diversity in the community. We also organise a varied schedule of events for the wider community during Black History Month. Our mentoring schemes introduce Young People to careers in the creative and food industries, while our outreach work has included collaboration and meetings with local schools, hate crime organisations, youth schemes and Sutton United. Kaleidoscope (available online and in hard copy format) is our fledgling magazine which gives a regular overview of our charity initiatives, together with articles on African, Caribbean and British culture, politics, history, and sport, with a view to giving writers of all social backgrounds a voice on their topics of interest.

Julian House offers services to clients with differing levels of need, these include homeless services, accomodation and our hostel on Manvers streetJulian House is a charity that supports vulnerable and at-risk individuals. These include adults and young people experiencing homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, adults with learning difficulties and people who need support after leaving prison. “Every year, we support over 1,800 vulnerable individuals.” We operate more than 40 different projects, accommodation sites and social enterprises across South West England. These include our homeless outreach services, a 20-bed emergency access hostel, various support. We also run multiple training programmes (including at our bike workshops in Bath and Trowbridge) to help people regain confidence, learn new transferable work skills, get back into education, volunteering and employment.

Andy has a passion for sport and enjoys all aspects of it, whether it is playing, watching Tottenham Hotspur or through teaching and coaching. Andy’s favourite sports are Football, Table Tennis and Archery. Andy is the captain of his local Table Tennis team which he plays competitively in the South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League. Andy also enjoys running and completed the London Marathon earlier this year in under 4 hours, raising over £1,500 for a disabled children’s charity called ‘Get Kids Going’. Andy believes in the importance of inspiring the next generation to keep fit and healthy, through making his sporting activities inclusive and fun for all!

Students for Global Health is an organization run by students for students. We have a vision of a fair and just world in which equity in health is a reality for all. We educate, advocate and act towards global health equity for students all across the United Kingdom, of all disciplines and backgrounds. Although our focus as an organization and network is towards global health we are also the representative body of all UK medical students to the International Federation of Medical Students, who represent all medical students worldwide to the World Health Organisation (WHO), which is the leader and governing body of healthcare services for all UN member states. This means that if you’re a medical student studying at a UK university, we represent you to the world. We have almost thirty branches at universities across the country, with thousands of members. We organize at least four national events every year, two general assemblies and two conferences. These are held up and down the country and any and all students are welcome to attend, no matter whether they are represented by a branch or not. We are one of the most accountable and professionally governed student organizations in the country. The charity is led by a National Committee, made up of individuals elected by the branches and affiliate organizations. Each branch also has a committee elected by the members at each of the respective universities. We also have a board of trustees as mandated by the charities commission. The board of trustees is comprised of professionals who kindly donate their time to provide oversight of the operation of the charity.
