WCCM in the UK is a national community of the World Community for Christian Meditation, a global spiritual community united in the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition. It shares the fruits of this practice widely and inclusively, serving the unity of all and building understanding between faiths and cultures. Community members of WCCM worldwide are those who follow the WCCM Mission Statement: To communicate and nurture meditation as passed on through the teaching of John Main in the Christian tradition in the spirit of serving the unity of all. In practical terms this means that the community offers opportunities for people to learn about meditation, helps them to deepen their practice over the years and encourages them to provide opportunities for others to do the same – not only though local group meetings but also through sharing meditation more widely in such spheres as prisons, schools and the marginalised in our society, as a few examples. At a local level, the UK community is widespread and many followers meet on a regular, mostly weekly, basis to meditate together in churches, halls and homes. These groups help to nurture and support a growing practice of meditation. Structurally, groups are ordered into regions to facilitate communication, local contact and the organisation of regional activities such as quiet days and retreats. As well as meeting in physical groups, the community facilitates on-line meditation and providing the opportunity to meditate with others at most times of the day and night across the globe. You can search for online groups here. At a national level there are essential teaching weekends and silent retreats as well as an annual conference for sharing and deepening the practice. The UK charity is run almost exclusively by volunteers. The organisation of WCCM in the UK is through a registered charity with a Board of Trustees and a National Council comprising principally the Regional and Special Interest Coordinators and guided by a National Coordinator. The day-to-day facilitation of the community is managed through a body called the Action Group, chaired by the National Coordinator, along with a very small office team. We are an independent, non-denominational charity providing holistic values-related education programmes for teachers and schools. With over 25 years of experience, we share our knowledge and experience so as to promote better outcomes for young citizens, both academically and as empowered, happy, healthy individuals who feel capable of fulfilling their true potential, whatever their starting points in life. Not only have we been supplying practical, personal development and wellbeing programmes for a generation of learners aged from 4 to 14 but we also provide training in Values Education, an element in the school curriculum that is becoming increasingly significant as the topic of values becomes ever more mainstream and as the understanding of how values affect and impact people’s thinking, decision-making, actions and wellbeing grows. The intense focus on academic outcomes during the past two decades has been at the expense of many children’s mental health and wellbeing, and this has brought into focus the urgent need for a shift in education practices towards rounded, whole-child development. This approach has always been central to our work. There are few opportunities for teachers during their initial teacher training and continuing professional development to learn about the role of values in our day-to-day lives and to appreciate how they can be proactively used to nurture and empower individuals to progressively gain character strengths, social and emotional skills and personal qualities that are essential for their happiness, health and capacity to maximise their talents and abilities. This is the gap we fill.

SAY Women offers safe semi-supported accommodation and emotional support for young women aged 16 to 25 who are survivors of sexual abuse, rape or sexual assault and who are homeless, or threatened with homelessness. SAY Women was established in 1991 in response to CHAR research that found 4 in 10 young women who were homeless had become so due to sexual abuse. The research recognised the complex needs of young women in this position and the high risk of ongoing targeting from perpetrators due to their vulnerable circumstances. We are a charity of women supporting women who are survivors of men’s sexual violence. Using the framework of the Judith Herman model: Establishing Safety, Mourning & Remembering, Reconnection and Move On, we operate the Social Model of support. This concentrates on the experience of abuse as the issue, and recognises that the behaviours that survivors have had to use, such as self-harm and anger, are coping strategies. Collage.jpg Support for the young women is offered in the form of semi-independent living in our Accommodation Project, alongside support to prepare for a more independent lifestyle, as well as looking at the difficulties surrounding their childhood sexual abuse. They work towards moving into their own tenancy, while we offer ongoing support at our Resource Service with emotional and mental health difficulties, plus groupwork, events, activities and help with practical issues. The support we provide is flexible and varies according to what each young woman needs, so she is always in control and can access the service at a pace that suits her.

Our culture and organisational strategy is founded upon two principles: that we are relevant and accessible to all. As an institution, we are striving to become more inclusive and help the wider water and environmental management sector (WEM) feel that way too. To us, this means making CIWEM a welcoming environment where everyone feels able to participate and that their unique voices and experiences are represented. We have been working as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Science Council Diversity and Inclusion progression framework steering group, as well as other water and environmental organisations to improve our levels of equality and inclusion across the sector.
