Students for Global Health Sheffield

Students for Global Health is an organization run by students for students. We have a vision of a fair and just world in which equity in health is a reality for all. We educate, advocate and act towards global health equity for students all across the United Kingdom, of all disciplines and backgrounds. Although our focus as an organization and network is towards global health we are also the representative body of all UK medical students to the International Federation of Medical Students, who represent all medical students worldwide to the World Health Organisation (WHO), which is the leader and governing body of healthcare services for all UN member states. This means that if you’re a medical student studying at a UK university, we represent you to the world. We have almost thirty branches at universities across the country, with thousands of members. We organize at least four national events every year, two general assemblies and two conferences. These are held up and down the country and any and all students are welcome to attend, no matter whether they are represented by a branch or not. We are one of the most accountable and professionally governed student organizations in the country. The charity is led by a National Committee, made up of individuals elected by the branches and affiliate organizations. Each branch also has a committee elected by the members at each of the respective universities. We also have a board of trustees as mandated by the charities commission. The board of trustees is comprised of professionals who kindly donate their time to provide oversight of the operation of the charity.

This has been our story for more than a century, and the challenge remains great. More than 14,000 people are killed in accidents across the UK each year with thousands more suffering injuries, many of which are life-changing. Yet, accidents don’t have to happen. Smiling happy young baby in his white cot We’re proud to be at the heart of accident prevention in the UK and around the world, working to stop the needless loss and devastation that accidents cause to individuals, families, communities, businesses and society as a whole. The only UK charity to work across occupational health and safety, and road, home, leisure and education safety, we promote the exchange of life-enhancing skills and knowledge by: Researching the evidence base for accident prevention, campaigning on the big issues and sharing advice and information Providing training, consultancy, qualifications, events and products for businesses and professionals to help them manage risks to their workers and others Welcoming organisations into our membership and awards communities where they can learn from best practice and celebrate their achievements. The significant reductions in death and injury on the roads and in workplaces across the UK have demonstrated that a systematic approach to accident prevention works, and we are proud to have played our part. I have 2 amazing children Noah and Phoebe who love to help me out in the kitchen and join in with classes and workshops whenever they can. My wonderful husband Andy shares my passion for cooking and enjoying good food. He has been a sweet chef in a Michelin star restaurant but these days he is kept busy preparing ingredients and washing the pots from the Cook Stars sessions. I come from a family of foodies and food lovers. My mum Marion, introduced me to cooking from a very early age when I would often "help her" in the kitchen. She even used to come into my junior school to volunteer to teach baking and ended up doing this for 25 years!! My brother was also inspired and now owns his own Michelin star restaurant! My degree is in Psychology and Sociology but I have always had an interest in learning about food, cooking and sharing my knowledge and skills. I worked in the hospitality industry as a waitress for many years from part time while going through my education to full time as restaurant supervisor and back to being a waitress while starting out in my teaching career. After graduating I moved to Romania for a short time doing charity work in Gypsy villages particularly working with the children within the communities and helping to feed the villagers by making soup twice a week with one of the heads of the village and distributing it to villagers in need. I worked in a local secondary school for 15 years first as a teaching assistant working in a variety of subjects with students with a variety of needs. I completed my training as a Food teacher in 2005, I have taught a variety of food courses in KS3 and KS4. I was head of the D&T faculty and also worked alongside some local primary schools on a variety of projects. On my return to work after having Phoebe I realised that I needed to look at different avenues to regain my work life balance. Cook stars is the perfect opportunity for me to do this. I can do what I truly love which is teaching Kids to cook and encouraging children to enjoy cooking and learning about nutrition.
