The Mind Matters Initiative (MMI) aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing of those in the veterinary team, including students, veterinary nurses, veterinary surgeons and practice managers. MMI was launched in 2015 and is funded and run by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in the UK. The RCVS takes the mental health and welfare of members of the veterinary profession seriously, and its five-year, one million pound commitment to Mind Matters reflects this. Mind Matters is chaired by Susan Dawson, who is also Chair of the Veterinary Schools Council. It is run day to day by its Director, RCVS CEO, Lizzie Lockett and Mind Matters Initiative Manager, Lisa Quigley. Mind Matters is a pan-professional initiative, supported by a taskforce comprising representatives from key veterinary and veterinary nursing organisations, including:

John worked as an executive in healthcare for Johnson and Johnson and he was a recipient of their coveted J&J achievement award for developing a national hospital consulting software program. John also worked as a consultant for Johnson and Johnson where he was successful in new business development. John made his second step in the entrepreneurial world by developing and writing a RFP for a Medicaid managed care proposal. He was the successful bidder of a billion dollar RFP. John has served as CEO of several start up companies that he developed and sold in the areas of healthcare. John currently invests in companies and has footprints in the areas of Social Media, E-Sports, healthcare, insurance, Coal, and shockwave therapy.

Stephen Shiell and Hannah White are artist duo Blanc Sceol. Their compositions, interventions and performances express their experience of place, anchored in what is found in a landscape but re-imagined into new territories. They create encounters to connect both materially and energetically to their surroundings. They are certified Deep Listening® practitioners and regularly run workshops and sound walks exploring listening and sound making in public spaces. They have worked with a variety of and experimental platforms such as Anti-university, Fort Process, We’re All Bats, MIA festival and Art’s Birthday and cultural institutions such as Ashmolean Museum, The Royal Academy, Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe and Oxford Contemporary Music. In 2018 they established Surge Cooperative, a collaborative effort to benevolently occupy the Channelsea river in London. Their research seeks to live with, listen with and act with this vital living system, finding new ways to tackle problems of neglect and misuse whilst navigating ancient acts of parliament and institutional backwaters to fight for the protection of this waterway.

The event, which began as a half-day lunch, grew in popularity and eventually morphed into an all-day event attracting over 400 participants each year. Back to the days when the Lurueña family embraced Spain’s second largest Burger King franchise, managed by our very own CEO, Jorge Lurueña, alongside his father. In those days, hospitality leaders like you had to do everything on paper, or later, in Excel. We experienced these laborious and inefficient system first-hand, and they only fuelled our desire to improve, innovate, and evolve. So, it was in 2012 when MAPAL was founded and began investing in hospitality technology. We have been perfecting our products constantly ever since, by listening to our clients and adapting to the current needs of the market, as well as anticipating our sector’s needs for the future. James Gregory is the Founder & CEO of the Manchester-based Charity, Families Against Violence (FAM). The Charity has its origins in a tragic event over 13 years ago when the Founder’s son was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity in a gangland act of revenge. James personally experienced the lack of support for Black families in such tragic circumstances and resolved to do something about it. He founded Families Against Violence, a charity supporting principally Black and ethnic minority families in the Moss Side area with the over-arching aim of helping to prevent young people getting sucked into anti-social behaviour, criminal activity, gangs and violence. FAM works with hundreds of children and young people each week. The Charity uses sport, principally football, to engage with children and young people. Trained and experienced coaches can then mentor and become role models, helping sometimes hard-to-reach young people find pathways into training and employment and to have better life-chances. Separate from his role with FAM, James is the CEO of AAM. In both of these roles, and working with a network of experienced and inspirational coaches and trainers, he: – I. Networks with local and regional stakeholders, including in the criminal justice system; II. Acts as an advocate for addressing social injustices, particularly for Black and Ethnic Minority Communities; III. Plans, organises and runs sports events and activities for young people; IV. Plans and organises training events for young people; V. Manages a network of local sports coaches; and VI. Mentors young people. To support his role, James is a certified football coach and has obtained qualifications in ‘Working with Gangs’ and ‘Training the Trainer’, both from Birmingham University. He also has earned a mentoring Diploma from Manchester Metropolitan University. Feeding into his role with FAM, James spent 12 months as a Youth Worker for User Voice, an organisation that gives a voice to people in the criminal justice system. In that job he worked with young offenders in prisons help manage their reintegration into society.
