sarah goss traditional woodcarving

Sarah specialises in providing bespoke hand carved items ranging from lettering and relief decoration to producing architectural details such as corbel brackets and ceiling roses. By adding hand carved decoration, items that are otherwise plain and ordinary are transformed into unique pieces that are personal to the owner. This applies just as much to everyday objects such as chopping boards as to more elaborate ornamental features to decorate the home. Wood carving is incredibly versatile and Sarah can either work from existing designs you may have seen or create a completely new piece for you. As well as producing the initial carved work Sarah can offer a variety of finishes including oil and water gilding using genuine Gold and Silver leaf. Sarah's interest in traditional crafts began whilst studying for A Levels in Art & History of Art at the Royal Latin School, Buckinghamshire. Through understanding how the country's great buildings were built and furnished, along with the reasoning behind their design, she developed an even greater respect for their creators and understood why it is important to maintain these buildings for future generations. From Buckingham she moved to Portsmouth to study a degree in Restoration and Decorative Studies at Portsmouth University. Within her first year she had grasped the basics in a variety of traditional decorative techniques including faux finishing, gilding and scagliola. In her final two years she decided to focus her studies on woodcarving and plasterwork- both in a restorative sense and in creating new designs using traditional materials and methods. During her time at University she was provided with the opportunity to hone her skills in both woodcarving and plasterwork. Her projects included 3-coat lime plastering, using the lime plaster she'd made from scratch using traditional recipes. She researched the historic and almost extinct technique of freehand stucco work, creating her own designs and experimenting with various recipes, including those that were used in the restoration of Uppark in Hampshire. Thankfully all that hard work paid off and she graduated with a 1st Class Honours. Sadly, her year was the last to complete this course as the University decided to end it in back in 2008. From Hampshire she was on the move again, this time to Shropshire where she began work with a heritage company. Here she built upon her project managing skills and learnt more about the structural side of building restoration, particularly timber framed buildings. Whilst she enjoyed her time in Shropshire, she decided that she was much happier in her workshop among the sawdust and plaster, which leads her to her current home back in West Sussex.

Over recent years Sara Ward and her family have transformed their Victorian terrace house into an urban smallholding allowing them to have the best of both worlds. Nestled in West London, they are living the good life complete with 22 hens, three colonies of honey bees, a fruitful kitchen garden and a micro bakery which is making up to 100 loaves of bread each Friday along with hundreds of sticky buns, cakes and savoury treats. Whilst Sara and the family continue to expand their hands-on skills, they train and encourage others through their schools programme, writing, and series of courses that are run from Hen Corner throughout the year. Be it jam making, wood carving, bee keeping or bread baking, there’s always something new that we can learn.

Workshop 925 launched in January 2019 and is based at The Mayford Centre which is nestled between Guildford and Woking in Surrey. The workshop was launched by Kirsten Hendrich after several years teaching within adult education facilities, alongside running her own jewellery brand Kirsten Hendrich Jewellery. Kirsten often felt frustrated at large class sizes, the lack of specialist equipment and solid workbenches to allow students to really blossom. So, she began her vision which was to create the perfect learning environment for jewellers of all levels to come and learn new skills using professional equipment, providing the best chance possible for students to learn the technical and business skills of the trade within small class sizes enabling plenty of one to one tutor support to aid effective learning.

I am a glass artist based on the edge of the Pennine town of Hebden Bridge where I work from my home studio creating kiln formed glass work. My work is all fused glass which involves several processes – design, hand cutting from sheets of glass, use of glass powders and enamels, flame work, kiln carving and finally multiple kiln firings and cold working by hand. A keen cyclist, I spend much of my spare time cycling the beautiful hills of Yorkshire and holidays cycling the French Alps and Pyrenees. I take inspiration from my love of the local landscape of hills and mill towns and my passion for cycling. My current work celebrates both Yorkshire and my excitement about the Tour de France coming to the area.

In partnership with Brent Council, we are very excited to announce SAY Adventure, a free 4-month programme accessible to all young people from Brent between the ages of 12-19! SAY Adventure consists of empowering workshops delivered by qualified facilitators from diverse communities and professions, including teaching, medicine, leadership coaching, business ownership, media broadcasting and youth work. There will be a focus on developing young people’s identity, belonging and sense of cultural competency as a way of increasing their confidence in carving out a future in modern multicultural Brent and Britain. SAY Adventure will also be an opportunity to get to know other young people in the community and ultimately have fun, with free lunch provided to those in attendance. Beatrice Hoffman has worked as a sculptor since her sculpture degree 1986-89 at the Norwich School of Art, mainly modelling in clay and plasticine, but also carving in stone, wood, plaster, polystyrene and expandable foam. Originally from Germany, she has settled in a small village near Oxford, where she sculpts in her conservatory studio , and under a gazebo in the summer. As you can see from her website gallery, the sizes of her sculptures vary from domestic small figures for windowsills, chimney breasts and coffee tables to middle sized (60-90 cm tall) garden und indoor sculptures on plinths or furniture, and freestanding life-size large public and private commissions 200 cm high, suitable for gardens, large interior reception halls and offices. A few of her sculptures can be found in the gallery “The Art Agency” in Esher near London. To buy a sculpture, you can also approach her directly via phone, video/zoom or email; or alternatively arrange a studio visit. Once a year in May she opens her studio with “Oxford Arts Weeks” (OAW) . You can find the retail prices of sculptures beside the individual sculpture images on this website; this price does not include anything else but the sculpture. Costs for courier and crates ( for larger sculpture only) and tax (VAT and Local destination Tax duty) are NOT included in the price. Please contact your Customs authority to enquire about the costs of tax; Beatrice will let you know about the courier costs. She sends sculptures world-wide via courier. The prices on the website are for bronze-resin casts; bronze casts can be commissioned , with a 50% downpayment and on average, a six weeks lead-time. If necessary and possible, she can advise on siting a newly-bought sculpture and the choice of plinths.
