Norton Hill is a co-educational, non-selective 11-18 school. Our students come from Midsomer Norton and the surrounding villages of North East Somerset. Norton Hill School prides itself on providing a secure, stable and well-ordered environment based on traditional values and genuine care and concern for individuals. We have just over 1600 students at the school of whom 400 are in the Midsomer Norton Sixth Form. In September 2016 we increased our Year 7 entry to eleven tutor groups, in response to a growing demand for places at Norton Hill. Students at Norton Hill belong to one of five houses: Blackdown, Cotswold, Exmoor, Mendip and Quantock. The House system ensures that every student is known individually, whilst enjoying the opportunities that a large school can offer.

The Autism Training Network was established following an identified need for quality support and training for a range of settings across the UK. Our clients range from health and social care settings, to charity and voluntary organisations through to businesses and public service companies. Over the last decade there has been an increase in the research and development of our understanding of neurodivergence conditions such as Autism, Tourettes and ADHD (to name but a few!) and with this increase, there are more and more individuals who are self-identifying or who are being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This left a massive shortfall in the knowledge and understanding of how to support someone or even just be comfortable around neurodivergent people. We believe that everyday is an opportunity to learn and our team are consistently undertaking further learning and training to enhance their knowledge and experiences to better facilitate training and learning opportunities. Our team has worked with some incredible people in the UK and the feedback that we have received has been testament in itself that we are supporting to make a change to how neurodivergence is seen. We are excited to announce that we are now CPD UK members!

The Forest of Avon is one of England's Community Forests which were established many years ago with the aim of connecting people with trees locally. The Forest of Avon is not a single 'forest' but the combination of the many trees and woodlands across the West of England, formerly Avon - the four counties of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. So far, well over a million trees have been planted in the Forest of Avon and many woodlands and access networks have been improved and maintained. You may see 'Forest of Avon' signs on your local walks showing where we have supported landowners to improve or plant new woodland and where they support public access for our lovely walks. As part of a network of community forests we can source funding such as through our current Trees for Climate project, Defra funded through England's Community Forests. We want to enable as many people as possible to access and enjoy the benefits of our trees and community woodlands.

Expectations and aspirations are high here and we are committed to developing the young people in our care, whatever their talents. Children of all abilities succeed at this school and are encouraged to develop academically, physically and spiritually, fulfilling their potential in a happy, caring environment. When Ofsted last visited, it commented: “The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. Pupils are very keen to share their pleasure of being at school and went out of their way to let inspectors know.” That is every bit as true today as it was then. Examination performance is very strong. At A level, students reach exceptional levels in a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. Students routinely progress to Russell Group universities, including year-on-year to Oxford and Cambridge. In 2022, two students progressed to Oxford and Cambridge to read medicine, with a further moving to Oxford to study mathematics; in addition, one student is embarking on a degree in veterinary science. We are proud of the numbers of students who move on to university education, typically around 75% each year, and even more delighted in the variety of subjects that are chosen, following a rich A level experience here. Increasing numbers are also progressing to some prestigious higher-level apprenticeships, including one this year in software engineering with Lockheed Martin. At GCSE, students also perform well, both in value-added terms and in raw attainment. As a consequence, we have large numbers moving in to our Sixth Form, complemented every year with a number of students from other schools who choose to join us for their A level programme. Ofsted confirmed the strength in pastoral care alongside provision for purposeful learning by adding that we “have established a school that holds the academic success and emotional well-being of each pupil at its heart.” As a parent of four children myself, I am acutely aware of the increasing importance of education in today’s world and the role that we, as teachers, have to play in developing our children so that they are fully equipped to make positive contributions to society. The staff at Sheldon School are extremely committed and dedicated to ensure that this is the case and I am personally determined to see all children flourish here. I also value enormously the links between school and home, success being built on strong partnerships with parents and ourselves. My door is always open and prospective or existing parents are very welcome to visit the school; I look forward to meeting you.
