Kathmandu University (KU) is an autonomous, not-for-profit, self-funding public institution established by an Act of Parliament in December 1991. The Prime Minister, who is the Chancellor of the University, chairs the Senate. The Minister of Education is the Pro-Chancellor. The Executive Council and Academic Council develop internal policies and programs to run the University. The University’s Board of Trustees, which comprises renowned personalities including the founding fathers, is entrusted with the responsibilities of advising long-term plans and generating and managing of resources. The University operates through seven Schools: (i) School of Arts, (ii) School of Education, (iii) School of Engineering, (iv) School of Law, (v) School of Management, (vi) School of Medical Sciences and (vii) School of Science. At present, the University offers more than 200 long-term and short-term academic programs and courses from intermediate to Ph.D. levels. As of June 2022, the University has produced 38,339 graduates. Student fees cover 60% in KU’s financial management. The same percentage of student fees goes into salary and allowances. Other sources cover 40%, whereas the government support is 10%. A total of about 10% of the students studying in the University at various levels receive scholarships apart from educational loan facilities and other sponsoring schemes from different organizations. KU runs academic programs most of which are credited for being introduced for the first time in the country. On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, the then Vice-Chancellor, brought forward a vision document, Silver Jubilee Initiatives – Vision 2030, which pledges thrust for quality, innovation, equity, identity, impact and global engagement. These initiatives, founded on the University’s key achievements for 25 years in quality education, will remain instrumental towards achieving the status of a world-class university.

I was working with someone recently who held a very senior position in an organisation and he hadn’t been in a good place. He was terrified of an upcoming key note he had to deliver. At the end of our session he said: “I can’t believe it Jo but I’m really looking forward to it now. I’ve got the tools I need”. That is why I do what I do. What makes Voice in the Room different from other training companies is the different perspective Jo brings. Her unique approach has been shaped by her background and story. We were backstage and you could hear this buzz of expectation from the audience outside. I’d used all the security resources available to put it on and here I was with my actors saying they wouldn’t go through with it” Jo Darby set up Voice in the Room in 2016 but the seeds for the business were planted many years before. As a teenager with a love of acting she attended the National Youth Theatre. “I saw how directors were trying to help us to get the message of the play across and make a connection with the audience. That’s what they facilitated and that was the bit I found really interesting. How do you support people in a really positive way to achieve that? That was the point when I decided I didn’t want to do acting, I wanted to direct. When I later had the opportunity to do that at University, I grabbed it with both hands. Directing was a hobby that became a job.” As a Theatre Director Jo began creating productions in the North East at Northern Stage and the Live Theatre. She went onto launch her own theatre company and travel overseas to direct for the Australian Theatre for Young People before later working at Pilot Theatre Company and Bristol Old Vic. One early experience creating a brand new play with inmates at Northallerton Young Offenders Institute was particularly influential. “I was left on my own with the group to get on with rehearsals when one day things all kicked off, a fight broke out, there were chairs flying, the lot. I never felt threatened. I knew it wasn’t aimed at me and I was able to reassure staff such that we were allowed to continue. I persuaded the governor we should put on the play in front of the whole prison – in the prison chapel. Looking back now this seems unbelievable but it’s true! Just before the play was due to start my group refused to go on. We were backstage and you could hear this buzz of expectation from the audience outside. I’d used all the security resources available to put it on and here I was with my actors saying they wouldn’t go through with it. So I had to give them a big pep talk about how this was their opportunity to be heard and express themselves, remind them that they felt no one ever listened to them and this was their big chance. Eventually, they went out and did it. Everyone cheered and it all turned out fine. I still think now, goodness know’s what would have happened if it hadn’t gone ahead!

Tickly Paws Pet Care is owned and run by myself Gillian Salmon. I have spent the last 20 years studying and working with animals. I have extensive knowledge of your pets needs with a genuine love for all animals. I starting volunteering with the Dogs Trust when I was fifteen and it was here my passion for animals was set alight. I decided to study at Oatridge Agricultural College to gain practical experience working with livestock, horses, small animals, and reptiles. After graduating from college I went on to attend Edinburgh Napier University, where I studied Animal Biology as I wanted to widen my knowledge. I spent three wonderful years studying all aspects of animals from husbandry to behavior and everything in between. Whilst still studying I got a part-time job at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and after graduating from University, I started working full time. I loved every minute of my time working there and before I knew it had been eight whole years. While working at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, I gained a keen eye for identifying health issues from my numerous interactions with the associated Veterinarian practice. I have taken hundreds of animals to the vet for a variety of reasons, some major and some minor, keeping a calm head when this need may arise. As a result of these visits, I have developed an extensive knowledge of many medical issues. I also became a master at administering medication even to the most difficult customers. I worked with dogs and cats when they first came into the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, upon arrival, they were usually frightened, shut down, and sometimes aggressive. However, with time, patience, and love I helped many of them blossom into beautiful loving animals waiting for their second chance. I would cry tears of joy when one of them found their forever home. I fostered kittens with cat flu, cats with allergies, kidney & liver disease, and dogs with trust and behavioral issues. One of the greatest things I have ever done is to foster a diabetic dog called Hondo who came to stay over Christmas and ended up staying forever. I currently own an Akita cross called Rogue whom I re-homed from the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. She is reactive to dogs and people, it was trying to understand her that sent me on my dog training journey. She has taught me so much and I wouldn't be the trainer I am today without her. I relocated to Gateshead in 2015 and got a job at a Mypetstop, a private boarding kennel based in Washington. I was hired as the kennel supervisor. After two years I became the Centre Manager and enjoyed this new job role and the challenges it brought. However, I missed working with animals and being active. As my role involved managing people I had very little interaction with the pets we boarded and felt I had diverted from my true calling. I took the plunge and left to start my own business and this is how Tickly Paws Pet Care was formed. Who Are We? reSEND is an independent advisory service for families who have children or young people with special education needs and disabilities. What Do We Do? We offer impartial, confidential and accurate information, advice, training and support for parents, carers, young people and children regarding Special Educational Needs or Disabilities. This includes information concerning Education, Health and Social Care services. We support parents, carers, young people and children and empower them to express their views and wishes and help them to understand and exercise their rights in SEND processes such as the Education, Health and Care Plan process. We liaise closely with schools, the local authorities, the voluntary sector and other relevant agencies including education, health and social care. We work closely with a number of charities to offer further support and training to families. We also offer bespoke training covering several topics including, but not limited to, Sensory Processing, Autism and EHCPs. “Wouldn’t trust anyone else to advise me about an EHCP for our daughter.” CA, Parent How We Started reSEND was launched in September 2019 by Liz Stanley. Between 2015 and 2018 she had been working as an Independent Support Practitioner in Hertfordshire. The Independent Support service was established to support parents and young people through the SEND reforms that began in 2014. Independent Support Practitioners supported parents through the process of transferring Statements of SEN into the new Education, Health and Care Plans, as well as supporting those applying for the EHCP for the first time. This remit was then expanded to include support during the Annual Review Process of the EHCPs. During this time Liz personally supported over 300 families on a one to one basis and gave information and support in group environments to over 600 parents and young people. When this service closed in 2018 Liz continued to provide this support and expanded her remit further in a self-employed, independent capacity. It soon became very clear that this service was still in high demand and Liz decided to set up a company so she could increase the number of families that she and her team could support. Thus reSEND was born. Since then they have supported hundreds of families with EHCP's and other Educational issues. The team has continued to expand and 2022 saw the launch of the Tribunal Support service enabling reSEND to further support and empower families all over England. “Thank you so much for all your help and support with our families this year. All staff have received training in the EHCP process with many holding IPSEA Qualifications and/or Legal qualifications. The Company has ambitious plans for the future which include expansion and the ability to offer a Pro Bono service in the future. There is also plans to convert the company into a Community Interest Company (CIC) to ensure that all profits return into the business to continue to provide Justice and Support for All.

We are a group of individuals from different backgrounds and with a broad range of experiences. Collectively we have worked in and with statutory services, private business, charitable and voluntary organisations, and across many sectors including health and social care, education, heritage and industry. Each Director brings a rich array of knowledge and perspectives and we are bound by our common interest in building a fairer society. We like to be creative and to seek the involvement of others in generating new ideas, both to overcome existing challenges and in Thinking BIG about new ways to improve experiences and outcomes. After a number of years of talking about ideas, we decided it was time to take action. We looked at different models for forming a charitable, not-for-profit organisation, and took advice from some who had gone before us in this sector. As a result, we formed Thinking BIG as a Community Interest Company, dedicated to engaging in training, and projects with individuals, groups and organisations, in pursuit of the overarching aim - to promote social inclusion, opportunity and wellbeing, by making a positive difference to services and people's lives through meaningful training and community engagement. There are no share holders, no dividends and no spurious expenses. Any funds raised are put entirely into the running of projects for the benefit of the community. As for the name, we asked the people we work with what words they thought captured what we do. We want people to Think BIG when considering new projects and activities, not to be limited by what is already out there. A little imagination and passion goes a long way, and we're on an exciting journey. We have experience of achieving outstanding outcomes, both with organisations, and with individuals. Our training is designed, delivered, evaluated and quality assured, with organisations benefiting from improved employee ability, confidence, performance and wellbeing. Our community projects have made a positive difference to people's lives, and include collaborations with The National Lottery Community Fund, the Police and Crime Commissioners for West and South Yorkshire and their Violence Reduction Units, Menston Parish Council, Bradford Metropolitan District Council, Kirklees Council, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, and Yorkshire Mentoring. Our Story Our aim is to promote social inclusion, opportunity and wellbeing by Thinking BIG. To achieve this, our vision is to facilitate positive experiences, progress and sustainable outcomes; empowering people through education, training, skills-building and having a collective voice in shaping future services and lives. Much of our work is with individuals and groups who face barriers to inclusion, opportunity and/or wellbeing, and others who can support these very people. Children and adults can be vulnerable or disadvantaged by many factors including disabilities, ill-health, poverty, abuse, isolation, marginalisation or being in care. They can also find it difficult to keep themselves and others healthy and safe, or to access opportunities, services or employment, as a result of missing out on appropriate education, training or support. We can help to achieve goals and aspirations which improve lives. Others who support vulnerable people include families, friends, carers, schools, and involved or potentially supportive professionals, volunteers and services. These people can also face challenges which need to be recognised and addressed and they can be empowered in their roles through dedicated support and training. By choosing to use our training services for their teams, organisations can benefit from outstanding workforce development whilst simultaneously supporting their communities, as money raised is invested back into meaningful activities and projects

Duck and Dive was formed over 25 years ago. After teaching scuba diving in Cyprus, Garry returned to the United Kingdom and opened Duck and Dive, originally teaching theory from his grandmother’s cellar in Eccleshill in Bradford. A few months later we had out grown the premises, so bought a static caravan at Moor Valley Park, Hawksworth, over the moors near Baildon. This became his base for academic training for 6 years. Previously using Shipley dive pool for practical teaching, it was limited to 45 minutes a week and it was used for as long as possible before moving to Tong pool, which we used twice a week on Thursday and Saturdays. Unfortunately, Bradford MDC closed the pool, so operations were moved to Bingley Grammar school. The pool was not deep enough for Scuba and was not fit for purpose, it was then, we decided to be in control of his own destiny and build his own pool In Shipley. Ten years ago, the journey of The Aqua clinic begun. Before the pool was built we had a fully functioning and stocked dive shop in the building next door in Shipley. It was here in the late 1990’s he started teaching technical diving and exploring ship wrecks around the UK. This led onto Garry forming a company called Narked at 60, which was his own brand of diving equipment and was one of the first online e-commerce scuba equipment web stores. This evolved into the range being sold in most major dive shops in the UK and in an array of dive stores around the world. This success meant bigger premises were required so we moved to a larger unit off Preston street in Bradford. Work commenced with the famous brand RAB clothing on our under-suit garments, Typhoon international and ISP for our buoyancy products and Bowstone diving on the design and development of utility equipment. Garry then worked with specialist metal work companies their services of laser cutting, tumbling/ deburring, electro polishing and powder coating of the stainless-steel range which helped make a more rounded product. Garry also teamed up with local companies in the Yorkshire region to offer dry suit repairs and produce his own branded Narked at 60 made to measure Dry suits, both in neoprene and membrane materials. Garry worked with Business link and target export support team (TESS) and wrote manuals for their product range and CE marked goods. This enabled him to start travelling to worldwide exhibitions, demonstrating the British made product range and signing up distributors helping him to become one of the biggest British made suppliers. This was run in line with him teaching courses in which students were using his own equipment, this included police forces across the U.K. At its peak he was teaching over 450 students a year at all levels and became some of the youngest TDI /SDI Instructors in Europe. Garry has been a PADI instructor for over 25 years and retains his qualification. Garry has worked with the BBC helping produce documentaries for the television and has written articles for the Telegraph & Argus newspaper and technical dive magazines. Garry in 2008 started work with building his own pools in the current premises and he was keen to teach main stream scuba and offer specialised swimming lessons which is offered today in Duck and Dive.
