As the world’s first national graduate school in the Arts and Humanities, our mission is to work together to inspire researchers who are talented, caring, ethical and reflective professionals with a demonstrable commitment to generating and mobilising knowledge across a range of scholarly, professional and public communities. Our HEI members cover the whole of Scotland, from the Highlands and Islands to the Scottish Borders. Rooted in Scotland, we are an integral part of Scottish, UK and international civil society.
A culture that builds character. A curriculum that launches careers. Strategic growth that powers the region. Alumni who inspire the world. These are the essential components of SHU’s forward leading spirit. You’ll see that spirit every day in the engagement of your fellow students, the passion and commitment of your professors, and the confidence and competence you’ll find within yourself. Our career-focused, liberal arts-based academic programs provide students with the intellectual and professional fuel they need to build lives of achievement and value. That’s forward. Our strategic, entrepreneurial growth—and the capacity for partnerships that come with it— provides fuel for the economic and cultural development of the region. That’s leading. Our intentionally cultivated community—informed by our Catholic values and defined by its level of inclusion and support—is fuel for civic engagement and spiritual growth.

Martin Fairbairn Music – Piano and keyboard, tuition and performance
I have been working in Education for 17 years. I have taught in four very different schools. I spent much of the first decade of my career in West Lothian. I then came to Glasgow to take up the Principal Teacher of Maths role at Hillhead High School, where I stayed for 3 and a half years. I then spent 18 months working for La Salle Education, delivering CPD and training across Scotland. However, the call of the classroom never left… I am now Principal Teacher of Maths at Holyrood Secondary in Glasgow. I am the author of “Mathematical Tasks – The Bridge from Teaching to Learning”, along with Mark McCourt. I also, occasionally, run the Glasgow branch of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM). Get in touch with me at variationtasks@gmail.com or find me on Twitter @chrismcgrane84
