Anne started academic life as a zoologist, having been ‘good at sciences’ at school. She moved into the world of accountancy for much of her career and is now a potter. Working with ceramics is a wonderful blend of science and art. There are many points in the process at which a pot can go wrong- cracking during drying, exploding during firing, the glaze not fitting; the list is almost endless. Those are mostly solvable through the application of science. A pot can also go ‘wrong’ because it simply doesn’t please the eye- the shape can be top heavy, a handle can be beautiful but wrong for the pot. Again, the list could be endless. However, the joy in a pot that works aesthetically and that has survived the brutal ceramic processes is a deep pleasure that makes the pursuit of ceramics such a pleasurable chase. Feeling, like many potters, that there is a life time of experimentation ahead of her, Anne particularly enjoys the experimental intrigue of clay. In recent years she has been exploring porcelain slip casting in natural forms, such as avocado skins, and the effects of rain on glazed, but as yet unfired pots. The scientist is never far below the surface. Anne works in her garden studio in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

My Work Research Researching the stories we tell ourselves and other people; both historically and the present day – I delve into stories in academic research, the media, memoir, diaries, fiction, art as well as myths and fairy tales to understand the dominant narrative. Write Writing my own stories. I don’t ask other people to do anything I haven’t done myself, so my research includes autoethnographic or creative work of my own. Writing myself into my work is integral to understanding and shifting the narrative. I also work in creative collaboration with others. Facilitate Helping others tell their stories. My aim is to encourage diversity, complexity and specificity. There are no quick fixes, tidy endings, or moments of complete resolution in life and the stories we write and create will ideally represent this. Stories don’t need to be straightforward narratives, so I offer tips and techniques and make space for blends of different types of writing (eg poetry, lyric essays, journals or reflective writing) or other understandings of stories such as craft or visual representations. Curate Sharing stories. I aim to do all that I can to help little-heard stories shake the hearts and change the minds of policy makers and other people who keep the dominant narrative going. I do this by commissioning, editing and publishing stories of community and co-production on Ideas Hub; organising events; speaking at conferences; creating online archives; and writing and publishing articles about my work.

They are always looking for new members to support their on-going projects. We are entering a new and exciting time, which will see the school moving from strength to strength, building upon our current position as one of the highest attaining non-selective schools in Kent; with 61% of our students leaving with 5 A*-C including English and Maths. Together, as a school, we will be building an outstanding provision for the future, where students will take a highly active role within the wider school development and their own learning journey. About Sound Matters was founded in 2014, following a series of conversations between Mike Edwards (climate change and sustainability expert) and Harry Coade (music producer and soundscape recordist). These conversations, which took place in London pubs, cafes and galleries, were focused on how sound and listening could be used to create more sustainable and resilient futures. Mike and Harry discovered a unique and deep synergy between their disparate areas of expertise and began to further explore how they could apply this knowledge and insight. After delivering a series of lectures at leading universities in London, Mike and Harry began working on a number of global research initiatives, and academic courses, which were designed to discover more about how sound and listening could be used to understand the political, social, economic and environmental systems shaping the world. They also began working with a number of corporate clients who were looking for new ways of engaging their staff and stakeholders with the importance of creating business practices which were sustainable for both people and planet. From humble beginnings, Sound Matters has grown into an organisation which is widely acknowledged as a global leader in the use of sound and the art of listening to help individuals and organisations understand, and help solve, the most fundamental challenges facing the world. Sound Matters has a clear mission which is to create a universal culture of listening whereby every individual and organisation can access the power of sound and listening to create a better world.
