Yoga changed my life. After graduating with a law degree, in 2002 I embarked upon a legal career. The job, with a prestigious law firm, demanded 12 hour days and weekend working in high-pressure conditions. With no focus on work-life balance from the company and little attention to self-care on my part I struggled with anxiety, frequent panic attacks and developed concerning physical stress-related conditions. Having been told by various people of the benefits of yoga, particularly regarding managing stress, I plucked up the courage and I went to my first yoga class. I left with a smile on my face and a sense of peace that I had not felt for years and have practised yoga every day since. As a result of daily practice, my stress levels dropped dramatically, I stopped suffering panic attacks and I became more aware, insightful and content.

Born Jayne Elizabeth Fletcher, on the 30th November 1983 and grew up in Wolverhampton, Jayne was born 3 months premature; Deaf, with the doctors giving her only a small chance of survival. 38 years later this is her story… Jayne was born into a hearing family, who have no experience of deaf culture, identity or the language, they believed that Jayne would be fine and fit into normal hearing world and that she would get by . . . . Jayne struggled for years to battle mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicide attempts and self-harm, which she believes to be mainly due to communication issues, as so few people around her signed. Jayne spent a lot of educational years being denied access to courses that she had wanted to study such as music, due to her "disability". Her daily life incurred numerous barriers as there is very little access to information for people whose first language is BSL (British Sign Language). The impact of her announcing that she was gay, also resulted in her being bullied, not only for her deafness but also her sexuality.

I am a trained and externally accredited meditation teacher with the British School of Meditation. I first started meditating a few years ago after leaving a very full on job. I was quite stressed out and if I’m honest I was feeling a little desperate and came to meditation as a last resort and, if I’m more honest, I was a little bit skeptical. I was unsure how sitting quietly for a few minutes could make any difference. I tried a three minute meditation and instantly knew that it was for me. I felt a little calmer and a little less agitated so decided to continue and I’m so glad I did! The main reason I meditate is to take time out to calm my thoughts and also to enable me to have more of control over my anxiety. I find meditation very calming, it also helps me to be more present and live in the moment. Having accessible classes both in terms of price and content is really important to me, this ethos is at the heart of all I do. It was seen that basketball could do this for a number of reasons; these are illustrated in an All Party Parliamentary Group report into basketball in 2014, which states that “…there is no more efficient sporting vehicle than basketball to improve outcomes for individuals and communities…”. (link) xoball realises that building competitive basketball teams, and consequently trying to win games, is something that will encourage some of the new joiners to remain in the sport, and provide part of the base on which we grow the game, wherever we operate. However, xoball recognises that today’s society is increasingly complex. People’s liberties and development can be compromised by anxiety, isolation or the sheer amount of choices available to them. These can often be exacerbated by pressures such as social media, or the time and financial limitations on those who traditionally provided guidance. Coordinated, sustainable group activities are an effective tool to help individuals to cope with the demands of modern life. Therefore: continued participation will always take priority over winning matches. xoball takes pride in it’s values. The association will remain: transparent – make details of our activities available to our members, wherever it is not unreasonable to do so; dynamic – change our processes and structure if it will proportionately benefit the purposes of the association; outward looking – be highly hospitable to all those involved in the sport, and further our objectives by actively developing opportunities that become apparent, wherever and whenever that may be.
