The Yoga Fellowship of Northern Ireland (YFNI) is an umbrella body for those interested in Yoga. Our Recognition and Membership The Yoga Fellowship of NI is recognised by Sport NI as the lead body of Yoga in Northern Ireland. The Yoga Fellowship of NI itself is a member of the Yoga Federation of Ireland and The British Wheel of Yoga. Good Friends Moira Harper – Former Chair for eight years and President for three years Moira helped design a new curriculum, was a tutor and senior assessor for YFNI’s teacher training program, and currently is a board member of Yoga Therapy Ireland. She has a long term interest in promoting the link between yoga and mental health issues. Currently she sits on the Forensic Executive at the Royal College of Psychiatry in London. Liz Comerton – Founding member Liz is a relaxation, de-stressing and anger management consultant, who has taught on our training course for many years. ‘When we started the Yoga Fellowship, we tried to maintain links with the community and encouraged the spread of the benefits of yoga by our unique teacher training programmes which meet the needs of daily living. We brought many international teachers to teach and train us. This has given us a wide view of different aspects of yoga. A bespoke twelve-week resilience and anger management programme, for your school. Sessions can be devised to meet your cohort requirements. Our programme supports Y5 & Y6, students who form part of your ‘hard to reach’ cohort, who without preventative intervention may struggle with transition into Y7 and may become at risk of permanent exclusion. Our programme can be tailored for Y7 students to support them further, post transition. Furthermore, we can adapt our programme to engage with vulnerable students who are low in confidence, self esteem and social skills. Week 1 is an introduction to the course to students. Weeks 2 -11 is; A one-hour period of Taekwondo, teaching students the importance of self-discipline and respect, whilst improving self-esteem, confidence and team working skills. A one-hour classroom-based session covering: mental health; mindfulness; sleep hygiene; relaxation & calming techniques; health and well-being; resilience and positive mental attitude. We can also deliver lessons exploring how to be a model citizen, and how to avoid becoming drawn into contemporary youth crime such as: anti-social behaviour; bullying; truancy; knife crime; gangs and substance misuse. We will also deliver lessons covering; parent abuse; internet safety; personal safety; child sexual exploitation (if the school deems appropriate); crime & consequences; and domestic violence. Hi everyone, I am Debbie and I created and run the Elsa Support website. My motto is ‘Together we can make a difference’. One of the things I noticed very quickly when I was working in school was that there was a real lack of ELSA resources. I am a bit of a Google queen but even so it was difficult, without spending a huge amount of money on things, to find anything really suitable. I ended up writing my own planning and coming up with ideas and thought why not share them, that was the start of Elsa Support…… It is all about the BEES I love my bees and you might wonder why? Bees are: Busy, they work incredibly hard Work as a team always Social creatures and do communicate with each other Co-operate with each other for the same aim All have very different roles and divide their ultimate job between them all Create honey that feeds them, and us, they even store it for lean times Adaptable and do so when environmental factors change Bees work together for a common goal or aim, we can learn so much from them. They are the reason my very first ‘nurturing’ group was called ‘Busy Bees’. Well that and the fact I managed to buy some fabulous ‘bee cushions’! My vision for that first group was a group of children who belonged. We all know belonging boosts self-esteem. Feeling part of a community can have such an impact on children. Creating a group where children worked together as a team, who supported each other and socialised with each other. In fact, after the very first group I ran I overheard one of the very quiet and shy children organising for them all to meet up at playtime the next day. A major part of my role was helping children with social and emotional issues. It became a huge interest to me to try and break down barriers to learning. I am a big fan of group work and have written many interventions over the years which you can find on the website. I try to keep the cost of resources as low as I can because to me it is important that you do use them, but it is important to me that you can have some free resources to work with children, I know how difficult it is with school budgets. Every Friday I create something for free and share with you all. The website has grown from strength to strength and I have had many emails and messages to tell me how useful it has been to people setting out on the ELSA journey but also helpful to teachers, teaching assistants, learning mentors, counsellors and many other professionals. Back to the Bees and community My vision of my very first ‘nurturing group’ was based on Bees and my vision includes that for ELSA’s and other professionals working with children on social and emotional issues. Mental health awareness, quite rightly, is becoming a huge thing due to so many factors. I really wanted to create community amongst all those people working for the same aims. This is to support you in your role supporting children. Some ELSA’s/adults do work alone in school and just need a bit of support, a listening ear, reassurance and some kind words. Our main group on Facebook has nearly 3000 members, who are all so supportive of each other. It is a wonderful community of like minded people. We have a mentoring section where you can be paired up with another person if you feel you need that extra bit of support. I listen to you, I get involved in discussion, I suggest resources, I suggest ideas and I create resources for you. You tell me what you want, and I try my best to create it for you. Do join us, together we can make a difference! What is ELSA? An ELSA in a school is an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. There is a recognised ELSA training course aimed specifically at Teaching Assistants in schools. Examples of things covered on the course are social skills, emotions, bereavement, social stories and therapeutic stories, anger management, self-esteem, counselling skills such as solution focus and friendship. To find out more about this course, contact the Educational Psychologists in your LEA and ask them if they are running one, if not ask them if it is possible for the future. Also check out neighbouring LEAs, they will sometimes take people out of their area to make up numbers. Anthea Millar MA, Dip IIP | CST Partner, Course Tutor Anthea is a co-founder of CST, a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor of 38 years experience, and also a supervisor and counselling & supervision educator. She is a Vice President of the Adlerian Society, a training moderator and assessor, and author of a number of publications including co-author with Penny Henderson and Jim Holloway of Practical Supervision (JKP 2014). As well as her work in the UK, she is on the board and faculty of ICASSI, an international psychology conference, and is regularly invited to provide training abroad, most recently in Germany, USA, Malaysia, and Greece. She has a thriving therapy practice and has worked in a supervisory context with experienced and trainee counsellors, and other allied professionals across a variety of settings including Centre 33 and the University of Cambridge Counselling Service. In 2007 she established an in-school counselling service at Chesterton Community College, and as a teacher and trainer she has taught A level Psychology, delivered courses in counselling and presented numerous workshops. She has a background in nursing and the NHS, having specialised in substance abuse for over 25 years. She now has an independent practice combining varied client work, supervision and training as well as offering supervision for organisations such as Centre33, Stars and Choices, she has a particular interest in encouraging supervision in fields such as medicine, nursing, teaching, the legal profession and faith leaders . She is a counselling Diploma assessor for ASIIP and has been involved as a visiting tutor for CST since its inception. Picture Jim Holloway BA DipIIP DipH | CST Associate Partner, Supervision of Supervision Jim is a BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor with over 20 years’ experience in counselling, including NHS and local authority EAP contracts. He has worked in various roles for counselling charities in Cambridge and has an independent practice specialising in anger management, and for many years ran personal development groups for men. He joined the Cambridge Supervision Training partnership in 2012 and with CST founders Penny Henderson and Anthea Millar, Jim is a co-author of Practical Supervision (JKP 2014). He currently writes the supervision column in BACP’s Private Practice journal.
