I did NCT classes (which were nice but not particularly informative), and like so many people these days found a Hypnobirthing class. the whole calm, relaxed and natural birth totally appealed to me (I mean who doesn’t it appeal to?) and I had been doing yoga for years so perfect fit right? Wrong! Alarm bells should have really rung when in one of the self-hypnosis sessions, I found myself peering through one open eye to see if everyone else had subconsciously lifted up their hand. I am creative and intuitive but I am a practical down-to-earth person at heart, and this self-hypnosis stuff seemed, well, a bit of an unknown quantity. My fantasy home water birth kick-started on Sat 14 November 2008. The first day was all focused breathing, affirmations and deep relaxation (well, as much as you can with full on contractions)! Day 2 was more intensive but the hypnobirthing went right out of the window. The problem is that it just wasn’t ENOUGH. I didn’t actually KNOW WHAT DO when a contraction happened. I literally was tearing my hair out looking at the 1 sheet of paper with some suggestions of birthing positions from the NCT.

The Blaque Room is an community organisation started in in the hopes of highlighting the realities of sexual assault, human trafficking and similar atrocities. Although this is the case The Blaque Room also prides itself on being a place that offers some solutions by signposting people to organizations that can help, safety apps and also by being a supplier of personal safety devices. Established in November 2020 after a viral sexual assault video took the internet by storm, The Blaque Room saw the need to make young women and boys feel safe. Therefore, put up a post detailing the plan of supplying personal safety alarms to THIRTY young people in the local area and was soon inundated with thousands of requests for an alarm, thousands in donations and thousands of messages of support and also messages of people who have overcome and are still going through various forms of abuse. People of all ages, races and genders were thrilled with the idea of there being an organization that seeks to tackle sexual assault head on and provide a deterrent/ solution. Being an open and transparent organization, anonymized messages and requests would often be shared with followers of the page to keep them updated and make them aware of the demand. Since then, The Blaque Room has had the honour of providing over seven hundred young people across England with personal safety devices for free. Our story Back in 1991, bored to tears by his job, 23 year old journalist Tom Hodgkinson lay on his bed and dreamed of starting a magazine called The Idler. He’d found the title in a collection of essays by Dr Johnson, himself a constitutionally indolent man. How to live, that was the question. How to be free in a world of jobs and debt? And curse this alarm clock. Tom was fortunately sacked from his job and started to sign on. He wandered across the road to where his old friend, designer and writer Gavin Pretor-Pinney lived. Gavin was the kind of person who could help Tom to realise this dream. And he did. In August 1993, the pair produced issue one of the Idler. It had the sub-title “literature for loafers”. Dr Johnson was the cover star and there was an interview with magic mushroom guru Terence McKenna. Contributors included a young journalist called Louis Theroux (pictured above at the Idler Festival, 2019). The magazine has since enjoyed a number of incarnations. In the nineties it was published by the Guardian newspaper, then by Ebury publishing. Tom published the Idler as an annual collection of essays until 2014, then relaunched the mag in 2016. The Idler Academy teaches philosophy, calligraphy, music, business skills, English grammar, ukulele, public speaking, singing, dancing, drawing, self-defence and other subjects. A dancing lesson with the Mudflappers at Festival No 6 The Idler Academy was born at a festival. They were given a yurt and built a medieval garden in the shade of a lime tree.
