The inspiration for Memorial 2007 came from a school girl of African heritage who, after a visit to the Tower of London, asked her teacher "where is our history?" The answer is that in Britain, it is not in public view. More than 200 years after the passing of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1807, there is not anything to commemorate the millions of unnamed Enslaved Africans who lost their lives, liberty, and identity through the slave trade which enriched the colonising powers of Europe and their estates in the Americas. We came together informally in 2002 as a volunteer group. We took the name Memorial 2007, looking ahead to the bicentenary of the passing of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. In 2007 we became a registered educational charity with the Memorial having a dual purpose, not only as a memorial but as an educational resource. Our aim is to provide access to VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) whereby individuals will be able to have an immersive educational experience, regardless of location.

The Mother Tongue & Supplementary Schools Partnership (MTSSP) arose from a 'review of supplementary and mother tongue education in the London Borough of Islington', (Dec. 2001), conducted by the African Schools Association on behalf of the Supplementary Schools Support Service. The report stated that the ' education department benefits from an active, enthusiastic, diverse and well-established body of supplementary and mother tongue providers'. A key strength of our sector is the strong community base in which our organisations reside. However, the review revealed the need for support and development of ' specific quality assurance systems, training, funding of MTSSP providers and the development of more formal links with the statutory sector'. The positive response to the review led to the decision to develop a more formal structure. Since then we have adopted a constitution, with clear objects and have a management committee. In terms of achievement, the MTSSP partnership is on the cusp of realising one of our objectives, namely that of establishing formal links with the mainstream school sector. We continue to receive great support from London Borough of Islington.

A UK Flight Examiner, a prolific aviation writer with many hundreds of major articles published in UK and South African aviation magazines, a visiting lecturer at a leading UK university, winner of AOPA UK's national Safety Award, part of the UK's General Aviation Safety Council 2006-2017, the pilot who designed and ran FlyOnTrack for 11 years, a site dedicated to reducing unauthorised infringements of UK airspace, and a personally invited member of the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) central core team, headed by the Royal Air Force, dedicated to deliver UK aviation's contribution to a safe and secure 2012 Olympics, and working on projects with both NATS (National Air Traffic Services) and the CAA to communicate their key safety messages to General Aviation pilots and instructors, and the successful driver behind the initial adoption of 'Listening Squawks' which have now spread across the UK and into Eire, Italy and Germany. An invited working member of the Skydemon team at various Aero-Expos in Germany, France, and Czechia since 2014.

Welcome to Healing Asana. I’m Leola. The spirit behind it. Healing Asana was a concept that had evolved out of my life’s path. The Healing Asana method focuses of creating a safe, supportive and inclusive space for practitioners to tune into themselves. My goal is to provide safe, healing spaces whether this is in an hour session, over a block of sessions or at a retreat. My system combines yoga philosophy, psychology and medical knowledge. I marry this with traditional wisdom, particularly from the West African traditions. With this mix I aim to facilitate holistic and integrated healing. The techniques I use come from my yoga teacher training my psychology degree and my current medical practice. I am a practicing medical doctor in the U.K. I run yoga classes that use the practice of asana to foster self- enquiry and self-love. Films Without Borders

Films Without Borders (FWB) is a non-political UK registered charity that provides hands-on educational filmmaking workshops for youth between the ages of 15 – 19, living in challenging countries around the globe. FWB’s intention is to break down barriers, build bridges, and create a dialogue whilst simultaneously teaching youth the first stages of film production.. Since our launch in 2010 we have run more than 20 successful workshops in countries which include Israel, Rwanda, South Africa, Palestine, and most recently in aboriginal communities in Australia, enabling us to access over 300 young people living at risk. Our FWB participants subsequently made a series of high quality short films, which have been screened at prestigious international film festivals, including the Cannes International Film Festival. We are delighted that our films were screened during royal visits in Australia and South Africa, where they were shown in the presence of President Zuma and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The films have also been shown on various networks around the world. In 2013 FWB won the Brit Week Innovation in Philanthropy Award in Los Angeles. In 2014 FWB arranged paid work experience at the Jerusalem Cinemathèque/Film Festival for a Palestinian FWB participant. She continues to work for the organization on a paid freelance basis. In 2015 we are delighted to announce that Lionsgate UK has supported three internships, one with a casting director and two on a major feature film. The interns are from Israel, Rwanda and a South African township. This has resulted in the Israeli intern working on a paid freelance basis for the casting director. The South African intern has been moved out of the township and placed into a job created by S-ABC in South Africa. This has all been initiated and financially supported by FWB. We are currently looking at supporting a Masters in film for the Rwandan participant. We share an independent partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, whereby we incorporate award participants into FWB’s global workshops. Our other major partners include Swarovski, Lionsgate UK, Swiss International Airlines, Twickenham Studios, Deluxe Post Production/Encore, The Editpool. FWB enjoys the invaluable hand on support of George Lucas, Whoopi Goldberg, Mike Newell and Sam Mendes, to name but a few. We are very proud to have Nadja Swarovski as our Patron. I originally trained as a painter but instantly fell in love with the art of mosaics when I was first introduced to it about 20 years ago, and I haven’t looked back since! I make bespoke mosaics for public and private clients and have undertaken diverse commissions including wall art for colleges and hospitals, and numerous domestic commissions for floors, kitchens, tables and mirrors etc. Inspired by diverse subject matter including African textiles, Moroccan pattern, Italian church floors, the crown jewels and hot red chilli peppers, I thrive on each new piece of work being unique. I have run school workshops and mosaic parties for large groups of families and people of all ages. When working to commission I will initially come and meet you to discuss the work and to see where it is to be installed. It’s helpful if you can tell me what you are looking for and show any reference matter such as pictures, photographs or artwork that reflect your design style. I will be able to show you a range of materials and colours to help guide your choice.

I’m an author/educator/artist, specialised in Islamic architecture and geometric design. I have been active in Islamic geometric design for over 25 years and am passionate about the creative and educational opportunities this design tradition offers to a wide range of audiences. My first book Islamic Geometric Patterns has taught thousands of readers around the world how to draw patterns in the same way craftsmen have done for centuries. I have an MA degree in the History of Islamic art and architecture from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, and did one year at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts. I give workshops and lectures around the world and am involved as a consultant in various educational and design projects in the Middle East and elsewhere. During the pandemic, I opened a shop (www.brougs.shop) in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire with my wife. We sell homeware & gifts from around the world. During the pandemic I also wrote a new book for my publisher Thames & Hudson. It’s titled: Islamic Architecture: A World History. Out in April 2023

Liverpool Black History Research Group is a collective of community led researchers investigating and raising awareness of Liverpool’s long black presence. The important contribution of people of African descent to Liverpool’s development has gone largely unacknowledged and we are committed to revealing this forgotten history. We adopted the Sankofa bird as a part of our logo, substituting it for one of the two Liver birds, which top the iconic Liver building on Liverpool’s waterfront. The Liver bird is widely accepted as the emblem of Liverpool. The Sankofa is a mythical creature that flies forwards, while looking backwards, with an egg (symbolising the future) in its mouth. It is an Akan symbol of the people of modern day Ghana and is associated with a proverb ‘Sankofa w’onkyir’ which translates as “it is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten” The group is led by local historian and PhD student, Laurence Westgaph. Its purpose is to share historical knowledge and offer instruction in research skills and techniques, providing learning, training and employment opportunities for the people of Liverpool. Liverpool Black History Research Group is registered as a not for profit business, based at the Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre.
