Policy Relevance and Impact It is part of SASPRI’s objectives to conduct research which is of direct relevance to policy. Indeed, it is hoped that our research will form part of the evidence base for evidence informed policy-making. To this end we aim to keep a record of how our research has been used by government, civil society and academia. The following list gives some examples. We would be grateful to hear of any other ways our research has been useful to researchers, policymakers, academics or civil society. The South African Index of Multiple Deprivation 2011 (SAIMD 2011) and ward level poverty data for 2011 Health Systems Trust have used the SAIMD 2011 in the District Health Barometer and South African Health Review at district and local municipality level. The SAIMD 2011 was used by Prof Francis Wilson in a seminar on Mining and Migration presented to the Marikana Commission of Inquiry on 9th April 2014 Click here for a copy of the presentation. The Human Sciences Research Council have used the SAIMD 2011 to examine the relationship between deprivation and homicides. Ward level poverty data were used in the estimation of small area take up estimates of Child Support Grant by EPRI for the national Department of Social Development. KZN Department of Health have used the poverty data to examine the relationship between poverty and trauma. A charity which provides nutritional support to school children in deprived areas have used the SAIMD 2011 as one of the data sources used to target areas for support. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the Medical Research Council in a study looking at the relationship between multiple deprivation and low birth weight. National Treasury – contributing to work examining the basis of the equitable share. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) to examine the relationship between mining activity and poverty/deprivation. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the Rural Health Advocacy Project as regards their advocacy work in the former homelands. The SAIMD 2011 has been used in a case relating to tribal levies supporting the Legal Resources Centre. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the UCT Health Economics Unit to explore the relationship between deprivation and obesity. The UCT Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health has used the SAIMD 2011 to explore the relationship between deprivation and depression. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the University of Virginia, Department of Politics in their research on the determinants of health outcomes in South Africa. Utrecht University Department of Sociology have used the SAIMD 2011 in research to examine and explain patterns of vigilantism across South Africa. The Western Cape Department of Health have used the SAIMD 2011 for their Annual District Health Expenditure Review reports and in their Annual Perfomance Plan.

Dove House Community Trust (DHCT) is renowned as the leading community organisation responsible for the delivery of front-line community services in the Bogside and Brandywell area of Derry City. Established in 1984, Dove House, has, for more than 30 years provided many vital services and support to the people of the Bogside, Brandywell and the wider Derry City Council area. The Management Board of Dove House is populated by a number of local residents as well as representation from different sectors including public, private, community & voluntary. Each individual member brings with them an array of skills, experience and knowledge from both a professional and local level. The inclusion of residents in the running and managing of Dove House ensures that all services provided are in line with local need; furthermore, these services are effective in bringing about measurable change in people’s lives. Many organisations throughout the city, for example Conradh na Gaeilge (now the beautiful Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin on Gt. James’ Street), The Nerve Centre, The Gasyard Development Trust, Gasyard Wall Féile and The Bogside & Brandywell Initiative to name a few were embryonic visions which took on a life of their own whilst housed within Dove House. Presently ... Back in the early days, the centre was staffed by a committed, passionate and enthusiastic team of volunteers who provided a range of education and arts classes to local people. Dove House now provides a professional Advice Service to people in need across the Council area; a thriving Youth Club as well as drop-in centre in the city centre; a hub for those wishing to to return to employment or education; advocacy for women suffering domestic abuse; and help with money management. Dove House also works in partnership with other organisations in the area. in its present form has a dedicated team of advisors, who are equally committed and passionate about the local area. The current team work to support families on a low income and those in our community, who are most vulnerable. Information is available on a wide range of programmes? that can help them during a hardship. The range of projects, currently running in Dove House will ensure that the most vulnerable in the community can get assistance that they are entitled to, whether they are disabled or elderly, or experiencing other hardships. The staff will assess what their challenges are and based on the results of that, offer any assistance that they can. Advisors here can offer assistance with accessing benefits, referral to programmes dealing with debt management and financial capacity or accessing skills training. Creative is an international development organization dedicated to supporting people around the world to realize the positive change they seek.PAKISTAN Reading Project Pakistan is one of the few countries where illiteracy rates are actually increasing. Government statistics show that primary school enrollment is only 66 percent, which means some 7.2 million children are not in classrooms. The Pakistan Reading Project is a national program aimed at improving the quality of reading education in more than 23,000 public schools. It is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. Under the International Rescue Committee’s purview, along with 10 local and international partners, Creative is delivering high-quality pre-service teacher education, training and professional development with an explicit focus on teaching reading. It will improve management throughout the education system through policy support and enhanced information, planning and monitoring systems. Complementing education initiatives by the Pakistan government, USAID and other international partners, the Pakistan Reading Project will promote a culture of reading nationally by improving organizations’ abilities to promote educational research, advocacy and reform, as well as expanding the number of colleges and universities offering rigorous teacher training and specialized education degrees. The Pakistan Reading Project will advance and develop the reading instruction skills of 94,000 teachers over the next five years and is expected to reach 3.2 million boys and girls with improved reading programs. The program will specially target underserved rural communities where access to elementary education is limited.

California Association for Micro Enterprise OpportunityCAMEO’s history, like that of many entrepreneurial endeavors, can be traced back to long planning sessions at the kitchen table. Its four founders usually met in Santa Rosa at the home of one of their parents, who put them up, fed them, and let them hold their day-long meetings in the kitchen. At our 2018 Board Retreat, facilitator Judy Hawkins drew this time line of CAMEO’s History. Idea In 1993, a grant from the James Irvine Foundation brought together four pioneering leaders from around the state: Mimi (Lufkin) Van Sickle of Women’s Economic Growth (Weed) Sheilah Rogers of West Company (Ukiah) Debi Clifford of Women’s Initiative for Self Employment (San Francisco) Forescee Hogan-Rowles of the Coalition for Women’s Economic Development (Los Angeles) Each founder was determined to create and enrich business development programs serving low-income women entrepreneurs. They quickly realized that in order to serve this population, there was a pressing need for advocacy work. “Several regulations affected the ability of low-income women (and particularly welfare clients) to even imagine starting their own business,” remarks Rogers, “and these needed to be addressed.” Welfare clients, for example, were not allowed to hold assets, presenting a major barrier to business ownership. “We realized that if we were to move forward, we needed to start some kind of trade association that would let us do it.”

Zanaan Wanaan are Kashmiri words for ‘women speak.’ ZW engages in feminist activism on the ground, produces independent scholarship, supports creative work, and works towards strengthening the women’s movement in Kashmir. ZW’s action-research based approach is rooted in the commitment to upholding principles of peace, equality, and justice. We also work on building transnational feminist solidarities, forging alliances and creating cross-movement conversations. Our work facilitates, amplifies and advocates for women’s involvement in socio-political discourse. We publish original works in the annual issues in the ZW Journal. These issues are thematic collections of works by Kashmiri women from diverse backgrounds in the form of academic articles, narrative essays, investigative reports, auto-ethnographic accounts, interviews, artworks, photo-essays, video stories, and more. We are a network of women on ground and across the world working collaboratively on interdisciplinary projects ranging from gender based violence, peace and security, climate crisis, public health, and so on. ZW is focussed on women and youth-led activist action through critical initiatives required to build and sustain social change. We support/produce creative and artistic expression for civic action and information dissemination. In addition to this, we conduct capacity-building workshops, film-screenings, provide skill-based training programmes and also introductory courses on research and methodologies to young women as a part of our grassroots collective action.

Scottish BPOC Writers Network (SBWN) is an advocacy and professional development group for Scottish or Scotland-based writers and literary professionals who identify as BPOC (Black people, People of Colour).* Contact us Frequently Asked Questions Membership Membership is free and open to any BPOC* writer or literary professional who is Scottish and/or based in Scotland and participates in our online or venue-based events or spaces, or publishing or literary opportunities. Membership may be extended to BPOC writers or literary professionals based outwith Scotland on occasion. Commissioned artists will typically be from the BPOC and/or SBWN communities. SBWN may work with volunteers, partners and allies who identify as BPOC, or white, or another racial or ethnic identity.
