Driven and enthusiastic, in my corporate career I was a “high performer.” There
was a ladder to climb, and I climbed it: promotions, awards, the recognition I
craved. I had a fire in my belly that kept me going when things felt really
challenging. Then one day in a maelstrom of life defining events and traumas,
the fire went out. And I burnt out. I was broken and battered from a lifetime of
having to meet a definition of success that was set by others and my own
ridiculously high standards.
