Hi, I am Karen Bentley-Brown, founder of Bentley-Brown Associates and passionate about helping people to grow good business. For the past twenty years I’ve been helping businesses and charities to develop and thrive. I enjoy nothing more than reading about or, even better, visiting businesses that have found a way to improve the world we live in and at the same time as making a profit… Actually there is one thing I enjoy more that is sharing those ideas (See Positive News). Over this time it has become clear to me that the organisations who look after their people (staff and customers), and their environment, are the most successful; to put it bluntly they are more sustainable AND they make more money. You could say that I’m a bit biased as I have always believed that we should leave the planet in a better way than we found it, both for people and wildlife. One of my early memories is joining WWF’s ‘Panda Club’ as a child in the 1960s after hearing about the plight of giant pandas (I’m pleased to say that they have recently been taken off the ‘endangered species’ list). In my later life I was privileged to work for WWF as one of their Regional Managers before moving on to fundraising and development roles with other environmental organisations including the National Trust. The Growing Club Growing Club Trainers As my work began to merge with the ‘for profit’ world I always carried my environmental hat with me. At first it was under the guise of ‘saving the planet can save you money’… This is true but it isn’t a very authentic business model and I knew there was a better way to do business. Since becoming a freelance business consultant and coach I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of businesses both large and small and have developed a template that works for all organisations based on John Elkington’s Triple Bottom Line or People, Planet, Profit model. Put simply, if you look after your people and your planet you will make more profit. But there are an infinite number of ways to do this and I’d be delighted to help you find the best way for you and your organisation to develop and tell your positive impact story. ☺

I have always been fascinated by the answer to a single question: “How can I get the best performance from myself and others?” Even at a young age, it seemed obvious to me that it would be better to be positive rather than negative, which means: Goal focused rather than drifting Productive rather than busy Rational rather than erratic Organised rather than chaotic Confident rather than timid Optimistic rather than pessimistic Inspirational rather than cynical So, at the tender age of 17, I started my study on how one may become more goal focused, productive, rational, organised, confident, optimistic and inspirational. I read a lot, I experimented a lot, I observed others and I tested ideas to see which worked and which did not. I have been studying these topics for forty years. When I was 37, I started my company The Corporate Coach. I wrote unique training programmes based on the ideas and methods I had assembled. I framed my programmes into a system that was, and is still, designed to answer the same fundamental question: “How can YOU get the best performance from YOURSELF and OTHERS?” The Corporate Coach Group is based on three fundamental principles, of: Clarity Rationality Positivity These three fundamental principles form the bedrock of the program and each principle contains many subset principles, which we all should investigate, understand and apply in practice. Clarity; in regard to our goals, thinking and communication Rationality; in regard to planning, decision making, prioritisation and in handling conflict Positivity; in regard to our feelings (emotions) and in our personal relationships

Portsmouth

PETA was founded in 1970 by Alex Zemenides who, at the time, was Managing Director of component manufacturing company Sealectro. At the time, Zemenides felt there was a lack of training and development opportunities for his staff in the local area. Training that could be tailored to his staff and business, that met industry and commercial standards and that didn’t have to work around a rigid syllabus or programme. Together with five other local businesses, he created the Portsmouth Engineering Training Association – PETA – that was based in Southsea, Portsmouth. The combined vision of this group was to establish an organisation, controlled by local business, that would be free from external influences to concentrate on the training and development of people employed, or about to be employed, in industry and commerce. As such, PETA was set up to be (and still is) a registered charity, directed by an executive council of leaders elected from our member base. There are no shareholders at PETA, only stakeholders. We operate on a self-financing basis and are non-profit making, which means all our funds are reinvested into the services and training we deliver. Whilst our heritage is in engineering, today, PETA offers over 200 courses and apprenticeship programmes in the most sought after professional, digital and technical skillsets – from management training to health and safety qualifications, IT skills and engineering. Today, PETA is one of the largest and most respected training providers on the south coast and we will continue to build on this reputation, transforming careers and building the next generation of business leaders and technical experts.
