Makaton awareness: Taster session for museums  Tuesday 5 December, 10am-12pm  Are you interested in finding out more about Makaton and learning some useful everyday words to use in your museum?  About this training  According to The Makaton Charity, over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or a way to support speech. This includes young children and people with learning disabilities.   The Makaton Charity explain that, “Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.”  During this virtual introduction session, The Makaton Charity trainer will:  provide general information about Makaton and how it may be used in different settings to support language development and communication, enable attendees to learn approximately 30 useful everyday signs and symbols, alongside 12 more words which have been tailored for museum settings. This virtual training session will be delivered over two hours by The Makaton Charity.  Who should attend?  This training is aimed at staff at museums, galleries and heritage sites who are interested in making their organisations more welcoming to Makaton users.  Please note this session is now sold out. Join Mark on Thursday mornings to move, explore, and wake up to your true nature. Mark's classes are all about re-connecting the body and mind in order to find a sense of health, integration, freedom and kindness. Most of the time his classes are based around the seasons, since the Zen energy system is very connected to the time of year and changing seasons.

The course will introduce you to some of the most enduring photographic portraits and provide discussion on why they remain so seminal. The course includes an introduction to lighting and composition techniques for portraiture, as well as providing guidance on shutter speed, aperture, lenses, and other visual controls. You will use studio flash lighting to explore basic techniques in formal and informal portrait photography – though all of the techniques taught are transferrable to natural and other lighting media. There will be time for participants to photograph under three standard lighting set-ups. Some digital SLR photography experience is recommended. Morning The morning session centres on discussion of the work of some classic portrait photographers and standard techniques employed. The discussions will include elements of composition, pose, gesture, format and technique. Afternoon The afternoon session will cover practical studio lighting, standard lighting set-ups, direction of sitters, and time permitting also a brief introduction to some of the editing capabilities of Adobe Photoshop. Project Days are designed for those who are already familiar with digital photography processes but who want to pursue a particular aspect or develop more specific skills in one or more areas. This course is the perfect follow-on from our Digital SLR training courses and will support you in building upon your existing knowledge of DSLR camera skills and becoming a better photographer in general.
