Description

Catheter Lab Emergency Management Simulation (CLEMS) course

A bespoke interactive simulation course developed by the multi-disciplinary catheter lab team at Wythenshawe to enhance patient safety and share best practice throughout the UK.

Our CLEMS faculty provided valuable input to the recent UK guidelines on resuscitation in cath labs where simulation training is now recommended for all cath lab staff (https://heart.bmj.com/content/108/12/e1). Contact us now to arrange your next training.

Can't wait for course dates?? Join our shortened CLEMS sessions at the British Cardiovascular Society Annual Conference on Tuesday 6th June 2023.

Learning Objectives:

 • To re-familiarise staff in providing the core emergency management skills required to support the critically ill patient during cardiology intervention

 • To collectively learn a protocol that ensures each multi-disciplinary team member is committed to their role and empowered to speak up when needed to ensure patient safety

• To learn risk stratification and preparation as a tool to anticipate potential complications and act as early as possible to avoid further deterioration

Learning format: Access to pre-course educational material can be provided to ensure candidates have a good base knowledge prior to attending the course - this can save time on the day of your event.

During the course candidates will be working in a multi-disciplinary team and taking part in a variety of simulated catheter lab emergency scenarios. These usually take place within a real cath lab to make the scenarios as realistic as possible (yes the C-arm really does get in the way a lot!), but may also include 'Recovery' scenarios.

Each team will have the opportunity to take part in a number of scenarios including de-briefs and observe good and bad practice. The duration of the course can be altered to meet the availability of the attendees. As expected a full day course will allow attendees to gain experience in a larger number of scenarios than a half day course.

Registration: We recommend each centre to register a whole cath lab team i.e a radiographer, two nurses, physiologist and an operator from the same hospital. This isn’t essential, but it can help when working out how to transition the scenarios into our everyday cath lab environments and how it might work in each individual centre. The course also focusses on team work and involves a bit of role play, so its often easier for participants if they already know their colleagues.

Please register your interest to attend a Wythenshawe-based course and we will contact you to organise the details.

If you have more than one team to register, we could even arrange for the training to take place on site in your cath lab. Please contact us.
