Food - a fact of life is delighted to be running a conference in collaboration with Reaseheath College, which will be held on Saturday 15 November 2025.
This 100% subsidised conference is aimed at trainee, new, non-subject specialists and more experienced teachers and will provide curriculum support and teaching resources for food-related KS3 and KS4 courses.
There will be an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals, work with experienced Reaseheath College staff and their students, and update your knowledge and skills to enhance teaching and learning of food and nutrition education. Take part in hands-on workshops, talks and farm tours!
Registration and refreshments will be from 9.00am, with a prompt start at 9.30am. The conference will finish at 2.30pm and a light lunch will be provided.
Why not take the opportunity to visit the Reaseheath Mini Zoo at the end of the conference!
The conference programme comprises talks, farm tours and interactive workshops where teachers will experience the fantastic facilities that Reaseheath College has to offer, whilst developing their knowledge and skills to enhance their teaching and classroom delivery. There will also be a British Nutrition Foundation update, a session showcasing careers in the agri-food industry and career pathways, and an opportunity to hear about new resources and support from Food – a fact of life.
For the workshops, teachers will follow one of two pathways looking at food production from farm to fork:
Pathway 1: Primary food production – meat and dairy
Farm walk - farming technology, robotics and the importance of primary food production at the start of the farm to fork journey.
Sausage making from scratch: Explore butchery basics and the chemistry of combining ingredients to craft your own sausages. Or
Cheese making: Curds and chemistry in the classroom. Make your own cheese with milk from Reaseheath College's dairy herd and experience the science behind acid-set cheese.
Pathway 2: Protected crop growing and food fermentation
Tour of the Protected Crop Growing Facilities, including the Hydroponic Glasshouses and the Vertical Farm, followed by Tomatoes – fresh vs processed: Exploring taste, nutrition, and food miles through hands-on comparisons of vine ripened, artificially ripened and canned tomatoes.
Food fermentation: Basics of lacto-fermentation. Explore the simple science behind fermentation, key safety points, and how to create an amazing flavoured ferment. Taste a variety of fermented foods whilst learning how fermentation plays a role in reducing food waste and sustainability.
Teachers will be asked to indicate their preferred pathway as part of the registration process. Teachers choosing pathway 1 will also be asked to state their preference for either sausage making or cheese making. We will try to accommodate teacher's preferred choices, but unfortunately cannot guarantee this. However, resources relating to all activities and tips for translating to the classroom will be made available to all attendees.
Please note that Reaseheath College is a BRC registered food business and PPE will be required to be worn. In addition, participants must not wear nail varnish (including false nails or gels) or jewellery ( plain wedding band can be worn). On this occasion, it will not be possible to wear plastic gloves to cover nail varnish or jewellery. It is essential that all taking part in the conference follow Reaseheath College's food hygiene and safety regulations - attendees that are wearing nail varnish or jewellery on the day will not be able to take part in the workshops in the Food Centre (sausage making).
Engage in a hands-on training event with your peers.
Take part in exciting, interactive workshops that are relevant to your teaching.
There will be opportunities to ask questions of BNF, Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), and Reaseheath staff and students, and network with colleagues.
The conference is 100% subsidised – your commitment is your time.
