The energy transition and the drive towards net-zero emissions has resulted in significant efforts to develop new sustainable energy resources. Since 2022, security of energy supply has become an additional consideration in many countries. For both challenges, geothermal energy has been identified as one of the major contributors in the future energy mix. The latter requires optionality and a decentralization of parts of the energy supplies, particularly when it comes to heating or cooling.
Nevertheless, progress in essential large-scale project developments tends to be sluggish in many countries, especially when considering the significant potential at hand. Reasons for this are lack of access to digital subsurface data, missing experience in subsurface project development, particularly in the new energy sector, and lastly the lack of support, incentives and financial risk mitigation for communities and entrepreneurs to invest in geothermal energy characterized by low profit margins. Another aspect is that, unlike in the hydrocarbon industry, no integrated subsurface and surface project workflows are established for geothermal developments to date. This results in poor planning and in some cases also undesired outcomes due to limited understanding of the subsurface risks involved (e.g. Basel, Stauffen, Vendenheim). Non-technical risks like overregulation and lack of public support provide additional hurdles.
This course is addressing such gaps and provides an introduction to decision-based planning of integrated subsurface and surface project development for geothermal energy. It presents a structured approach and workflow for new energy developments suitable for large cities, small communities, industrial projects or agricultural purposes.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
Discover the role of geothermal heat and power generation in the energy transition.
Identify the main sources and reservoirs of geothermal energy.
Master the decision-based planning applied to geothermal development projects.
Learn how to construct a decision-based roadmap for geothermal projects.
Discuss the differences between volcanic, fracture, matrix and closed-loop geothermal developments.
Determine the use of analogues in geothermal development projects.
Recognize the available geothermal subsurface technologies – conventional and new.
Examine the requirements for well monitoring, surveillance and the impact of scaling.
Analyze which development options can be applied in which geological setting.
Practice how energy system integration can be achieved.
Explain how to deliver geothermal energy from previously undeveloped geological settings.
Demonstrate geothermal cost models and economic models.
Understand well planning and delivery, data acquisition and well completions for geothermal projects.
Apply multi-scenario modelling approaches for geothermal projects.
Predict the potential of additional synergies from geothermal projects.
Illustrate the decision quality, decision analysis and focus on project value
TARGET AUDIENCE
The Decision-based Geothermal Field Development course is recommended project staffs involved in geothermal energy development projects. It is based on a masterclass for petroleum development staff from multiple disciplines with 5 or more years of experience. This knowledge level training addresses the integration and collaboration within multi-disciplinary teams often representing various workstreams in a project. Previous experience in the petroleum industry and in subsurface projects is helpful but not required.
Geoscience and engineering professionals from multiple disciplines who work in geothermal development project teams
Geothermal field development and engineering professionals – who are in charged with new energy projects for cities and communities of various sizes
Government staff or staff from public organizations/city councils involved in sustainable subsurface energy projects
Professionals from well and facility engineering, finance and planning – who are involved in geothermal activities.
Finance professionals and investors providing funding for geothermal development projects

TRAINER
Your expert course leader draws on more than 35 years of experience developing, managing, reviewing and directing subsurface projects in all aspects of the energy business: from exploration business development (new ventures), through prospect maturation and drilling, to the appraisal of discoveries and field development. He has more than 31 years of experience with Shell International, accompanied and followed by 15 years of teaching Geo-Energy at university (FAU, Germany). He has also been consulting to energy companies and government organisations in the United Kingdom, continental Europe and North America. He was accountable for safety performance in Shell Europe for exploration and production development, geoscience operations and well delivery with a well-established safety record. He has in-depth experience in R&D activities as scientific researcher, research manager, and product manager for software-based geoscience technologies including development, deployment and commercialization. He developed and deployed digital solutions for decision-based planning in subsurface projects in Shell. Moreover, he accomplished at formulating competitive strategies in business, and technology deployment, translating them into actionable tactics and results. One of them, the cloud-based OSDU open source data platform development is now a Billion USD technology venture with a consortium of 230 companies from across the energy and IT industry. He also developed and executed Shell’s Graduate Training Programs as part of the Learning Organization.
POST TRAINING COACHING SUPPORT (OPTIONAL)
