In response to emerging trends in Net Zero 2050 compliance requirements and the current COP28 Agreement, the landscape of fossil fuel power generation is undergoing a transformative shift, prompting a redefinition of operational strategies. Furthermore, balancing compliance with stringent regulations and meeting escalating energy consumption demands has become crucial. Notably, coal-fired power plants pose significant challenges on this transformative journey, being major contributors to emissions and substantial obstacles to achieving Net Zero Targets and COP28 Agreement signals.

Understanding the nuances of adapting coal-fired power plants to evolving compliance requirements is crucial due to their status as one of the largest sources of emissions. Hence, this comprehensive course enables participants to explore decommissioning, preservation (both long-term and short-term), recommissioning, and repurposing practices for medium to large-sized coal power plants.

Participants will delve into the essential processes, regulations, and best practices involved in safely managing the life cycle of coal power plants, from retirement to rejuvenation. Participants not only comprehend the challenges posed by coal-fired power plants but also acquire the knowledge, tools, and techniques needed to strategically position these assets for a sustainable and compliant future.

This course will be delivered face-to-face over 5-day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 40 hours in total, 40 CPD points. Maximum number of participants: 20

With over 33 years of experience, your expert instructor has dedicated his career in enhancing reliability, optimising maintenance strategies, and assessing the remaining life of assets in the power industry. He has spearheaded critical evaluations of power plant equipment, including boilers, turbines, and generators, with the goal of maximizing efficiency and extending operating life. His expertise spans the study of reliability issues, performance analysis, maintenance optimization, and life cycle management of power generation assets.

Your expert instructor’s key projects include leading remaining life assessments and extension recommendations for thermal power plants and petrochemical facilities through a detailed analysis of degradation mechanisms and performance capabilities. He has conducted reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) studies for power plants, optimising maintenance strategies through Failure Mode Effects Criticality Analysis and Reliability Block Diagram modelling. He has implemented asset performance management systems, including GE Meridium, to enhance maintenance and reliability, thereby improving equipment availability and reducing costs.

Furthermore, he has been actively involved in major inspection evaluations on gas turbines, including GE Frame units, Siemens, and Mitsubishi, optimizing maintenance scope and costs. He has carried out performance optimization studies through benchmarking, diagnostics, and tuning of combined cycle power plants to boost efficiency, output, and emissions. Additionally, he has developed maintenance guidelines and strategies for power generation plants and critical rotating equipment, aiming to improve maintenance efficacy.

With a Master’s degree in Thermal Power Plants Engineering and certification as a Six Sigma Master Black Belt, he has not only applied his knowledge but also shared it globally. He has delivered training workshops and conferences on power plant performance, asset integrity management, reliability improvement, condition monitoring, and turbomachinery. His extensive hands-on experience, specialised training, and analytical expertise in power generation assets make him an ideal instructor for repurposing and extending the life of coal power plants. His technical knowledge and ability to train cross-functional teams position him well to teach this complex and critical topic.
