Description

Panel discussion: Applying the Ofsted framework for EAL excellence

Panellists:

  • Catherine Alexander, Lead Teacher of English and EAL, St Matthews RC High School

  • Lucianne Ford, Associate Assistant Principal, Literacy and EAL, Trinity Academy Grammar School

  • Mark Sims, former HMI and National Lead for EAL at Ofsted

This panel discussion brings together two experienced EAL practitioners and a former Ofsted HMI for a frank conversation about what the inspection framework means in practice for EAL provision. The panel covers five key areas: promoting high expectations, how assessment should inform teaching strategy, ensuring access to vocabulary, building an inclusive culture and using EAL data purposefully across a whole school. Mark Sims offers a rare inspector's perspective on what Ofsted is and is not currently looking for, including insight on phonics expectations, case sampling and how school leaders can brief inspectors effectively. An essential watch for school leaders and EAL coordinators preparing for inspection.

Very useful and informative. All speakers were very knowledgeable and sessions were delivered in chunks with some break. That helped to reflect and make some notes. Glad it was virtual due to hot weather

I found it useful, helpful and interesting. Glad that it was moved online - due to the hot days we are experiencing at the moment. Many Thanks.
