Multilingualism as an asset: Principles to improve practice
Catherine Alexander, Lead Teacher of English and EAL, St Matthews RC High School
Catherine Alexander shares how St Matthews RC High School in Manchester supports nearly 500 EAL pupils across 46 languages, using the Bell Foundation's five principles as a framework for whole-school practice.
This session covers the difference between BICS and CALPS and why it matters for accurate assessment, the stages of language acquisition including the often misunderstood silent period, and practical approaches to high expectations with appropriate support, integrated vocabulary teaching and social inclusion.
Catherine also shares how St Matthews uses FlashAcademy® assessments to track progress and prioritise intervention, plus a look at the school's student-led culture day. This session was recorded as part of a virtual conference.
