Description

From arrival to achievement: Helping EAL and refugee students thrive
Lucianne Ford, Associate Assistant Principal, Literacy and EAL, Trinity Academy Grammar School

Lucianne Ford tells the story of Aryan, a student who arrived at Trinity Academy Grammar School with no English and no literacy in any language following the 2021 Kabul attack, and follows his journey from his first days in Year 9 through to A-levels.

Alongside this case study, Lucianne outlines Trinity Academy's structured EAL provision across three bands of intervention, the school's induction process and a practical vocabulary pre-teaching activity demonstrating the real impact of consistent, school-wide vocabulary support.

The session includes research on the significant vocabulary gap facing EAL learners and is grounded throughout in trauma-informed, human-centred practice. A moving and practical session for anyone supporting refugee or new-to-English students.

Very useful and informative. All speakers were very knowledgeable and sessions were delivered in chunks with some break. That helped to reflect and make some notes. Glad it was virtual due to hot weather
