Independent Thinkers Education provides outstanding private tuition at all levels, from pre-test and 11+ tutoring through to postgraduate application support. Through our partner organisation, Independent Thinkers Courses, we deliver inspiring and academically rigorous university preparation and academic enrichment webinars. We specialise in advice and support on applications to the most academically selective UK universities and schools. We have outstanding teams of tutors who prepare young people for university admissions assessments and interviews, especially for Oxbridge and medical schools, and who prepare children for 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance and scholarship exams, and school admissions interviews. Since 2015, we have helped over 200 students gain Oxbridge offers. We also have a 100% success rate for applications to Imperial, LSE and UCL. All the children whom we have supported with their applications to UK independent schools have received offers from one of their top choice schools. The vast majority of our senior school students attend one of the following schools: Eton, Winchester, Wycombe Abbey, Westminster, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Harrow, Charterhouse, Tonbridge, St Paul’s (Girls’ and Boys’), City of London (Girls’ and Boys’), Habs (Girls’ and Boys’), Latymer Upper, Godolphin and Latymer or Highgate. Therapy Services – Symbol has one of the largest teams of Speech and Language Therapists in the UK offering specialist assessment, intervention, training and consultancy for children and adults with special needs. In addition, Symbol also employs Social Workers, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Behavioural Therapists and Nurses in its Family Assessment Services. Symbol is increasingly deploying expertise from these valuable in-house therapeutic resources across all its activities giving Symbol a unique offer to the people who use and buy its services. Family Assessment Centre & Community Support – Symbol operates up to 10 places for parents with learning disabilities undertaking a parenting assessment and intervention service (Commissioned by the Family Law Courts and Local Authority Children’s Services) and provides 9 families with longer-term specialist parenting support in the community post-assessment. Day Opportunities (The Hopyard Services) – Symbol supports 54 people with learning disabilities in a range of meaningful activities to promote skills in work, learning and leisure operating out of 2 separate sites in Kent. Supported Living – Symbol currently supports 50 people with learning disabilities living in 15 different ordinary houses where they live as tenants. This service is growing rapidly in response to local demand. Short Breaks/Respite Care – Symbol is working with 35 young people and adults providing regular short breaks. The demand for this service is also growing. We have the facility to support up to 13 people at any one time. Community Support – Symbol supports 8 people living in their own homes on a peripatetic basis.

Dr Steve MacGillivray is an experienced Health Services Researcher and Systematic Reviewer with a background in Psychology and a PhD in Health Services Research obtained within the Medical School University of Dundee. In the past he has worked in Departments of Psychiatry, Epidemiology and Public Health, Mother and Child Health and currently he works part-time as an Associate Professor in a School of Health Sciences. He has particular expertise in conducting meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (particularly Cochrane Reviews), meta-syntheses of qualitative studies and rapid evidence reviews for policy. In his career he has led international teams to conduct systematic reviews across a wide range of topics. He has been successful in collaborating with local, national and international partners to receive research funding of over £6 million to support research activity. In his academic career he has secured research funding from the following bodies: World Health Organisation (WHO); UK Government; Scottish Government; Department of Health Policy Research; Department for International Development (DfID); Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC); National Institute for Health Research (NIHR); National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE); Chief Scientist Office (CSO); Scottish Funding Council (SFC); National Health Service (NHS); NHS Quality Improvement Scotland; Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); NHS Education for Scotland. He is passionate about providing the best quality evidence to support policy and practice, and in providing training and support to anyone who needs to conduct, interpret or use systematic reviews.
